This invention relates to .pumping appa'- important that the power be applied to the vertical shaft to the best advantage without y any'side draft upon the shaft itself.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a construction by which power may be transmitted to the shaft through a belt without there being any side draft on the shaft. .A
It is another object of my invention to provide improved means for the lubrication of such a construction.
It is another object of this invention to provide guide rollers for holding the driving belt in properposition relative to the shaft pulley, the guide rollers and the means for supporting the same being arranged in such a manner as to render the belt easily removable therefrom without unlacing. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide means insuring against the forcing of the water and sand upward along the pump shaft into the bearings for said shaft. This is accomplished, in the construction shown, by providing a packing between the water lifting elements and the bearing for the shaft immediately above them, by providing an opening from the shaft to the well casing above the packing and below` the bearings for lthe shaft, and by providing for a small head of Water sur rounding the shaft above said packing serving as'a water-seal. e
It is another object of my invention to provide-improved means for lubricating the bearings of the pump shaft by means of pure water supplied from any suitable source from the surface or by means 0f the water Specification. of LettersV Patent. The means by which I have accomplished these objects are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and are hereinafter spel cificallyV described. That which I believe to be new and desire to cover by this applivcation is set forth in the claims.

In the lower end of Fig.' 1 the sleeve supported' by the arms 38 and supporting the bearing for'the shaft 15 is indicated by 47, and the bushing carried by said sleeve is indicated by the numeral 48.- As shown in Fig. 4, the lower end of the water discharge casing 36 has connected to it, by means vof bolts or in any other suitable manner, a pump bearing casing 49. Below this casing 49 are successively connected in series a pump shell 49, a second pump shell 49", and a bottom bearing head 50 which by means of webs 51 holds in position the bottom bearing 52 of the shaft. To the lower endof the bearing head 50 is attached the upper end'of the suction pipe 53.
The lifting elements of the pump are old and Well-known in the art. They comprise hubs 54 and 55 upon the shaft 15provided with runners 56 which rotate with the Shaft between the walls of the pump shells 49"-49" and the cone-shaped parts 57 which are supported by means of ribs 58 from the surrounding casings. The three bushings and the two hubs 54-55 are caused to vrotate with the shaftv 15 by feathers -54aL and 55a, Yas will be readily understood. The bushings 15f-15"-15c are preferably formed of brass, thus serving not only to position the runners 56 upon the shaft but also providing bearing surfaces of extreme durability which will not readily corrode.

In a pumping app-aratus, the combination of a water discharge casing, a pump shaft extending therethrough, a pullev fixed upon said shaft and having a bearing, on said water discharge casing, a shaft 'casing located in said water discharge casing separating said shaft therefrom, bearings for said shaft in said shaft casing, and a screen covering a port in the wall of' said Shaft casing below the level of the water about said shaft casing during the pumping operation, said screenbeing adapted to filter water permitted to pass into said shaft casing for` the purpose of lubricating said bearing, each of said bearings being provided with a duct therethrough whereby the screened water is permitted to pass downward along the shaft inside of the shaft cas'- ing for lubricating the bearings. v

In a pumping apparatus, the combination` of'a water discharge casing, a shaft extending therethrough, means for rotating 'said shaft, means operatively connected with said shaft for forcing water upward through said water discharge casing, a recess about said shaft above said water lifting elements, a port leading diagonally upward from said recess into the well outside of said water a fiexible washer mounted about said shaft in said recess and adapted to rotate with the shaft, and means for supplying water to saidY recess to serve as a water seal in connection with said washer. 13.
