FOLDABLE BATHTUB. APPLICATION FILED 5.2 0. 1918.

' FOLDABLE .Bn'rn'r -B.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CUR'r W. HAGSTROM, a
subject of the King of Sweden, residing at YVilmet-te, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Bathtubs, of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in, foldable bath tubs, especially. intended forthe bathing of infants and children, but also adapted to be used as laundry tubs and the like. I
An object of the invention is to provide a collapsible trough made of waterproof fabric, canvas or the like, and to support this in straight condition, permitting however to fold the tub when the same is emptied.
Another object of the invention is to proride, in combination with a marginal flap near a top edge of the tub, elements connected with said flap and adapted to embrace the reinforcing members, so as to connect de tachably the top edges straight" to said articulated reinforcing members.
Another object of the invention is to provide in combination with a pair of links constituting a reinforcing member, means which permit the pivotal movement of the inner ends of both of said links in upward direction, preventing, however, the move ment of these links in downward direction so as to render a collapse of the tub, owing to the weight of the water poured into the same, impossible.
' another object of the invention is to com-- bine with a flexible trough transverse members to which edge portions of the trough are secured, and legs extending from said transverse members, sald legs being removable from the transverse supporting members so as to permit the positioning of the flexible trough on the top of a larger tub Specification of Letters-Patent.-
tub to the opposite edge thereof, sov as to constitute a support for. the child while the same is beingedressed.
It "s furthermore an object oftheinvention to combine with the flexible bath tub a support for the flexible platform, said support including means for unwinding the flexible platform from a spool or drum provided for this purpose and for fastening said platform after it has been placed in operative position to cover the tub. i
With these and other objects in view an embodiment of the invention is described in lapsible framework of the characterof a camp chair or the like;
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same;
Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
Application filed February 20, 1918. Serial No. 218,183.
Fig. 3 is .a perspective View of the flexible tub supported by an ordinary bath tub, the flexible tub being covered by a flexible platform stretched over the same;
Fig. 4: is a vertical section through the flexible tub; I.
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail section of-a clip'attached to a flap of the tub for connecting the same with the reinforcing bars of'the upper ends;
Fig. 6 illustrates the adjoining ends'of reinforcing links for the upper edge, in stretched condition; a
Fig. 7 is a similar view of the sald links in partly collapsed condition;
Fig. 8 is a top planview of a portion of one of the legs permitting the establishment of a pivotal connection with another leg;
' Fig. 9 shows another leg portion adapted Fig. 8.
The tub 1 preferably consists ,of a piece of fabric which constitutes the end walls 2 and 3 and the bottom 4, which last named portion may be reinforced by additional plies ofthe fabric, if desired. The lateral edges of this fabric are connected with other pieces of fabric, which form the side walls 5 and 6 of the tub.
which constitutes the bottom and end walls 2, 3 and 4 are detachably' fastened to transverse rods 7 and 8, as, for instance, by means of keyhole and pin connection, the transverse members? and 8 being equipped with i a plurality l of al'ined PIOJGCtiIlg pins 10 for insertion into the portionillustrated in l .The two transverse edges of the fabric adapted t6 be inserted into the wider portions of 'the'keyhole shaped eyelets 11 near- The-central portion of the main" fabric of the tub is provided with a nipple 12 which is firmly secured thereto and which onthe -outer surface of the tub is connected with a cock 13. A hose 14 may be attached to this cock so that the entire tub can readily be drained, if desired.
The longitudinal edges of the side walls 5 and 6 of the tub are held extended in theposition shown in Fig. l by means of reinforcing members. Each of these members comprises a pair of pivotally interconnected links 15, 16, formed of bars which at their outer ends are bent into rings 17 loosely surrounding the transverse rods 7 and 8. Close to the rings 17 said links are twisted ninety de present t 'eir main portions in vertical planes adjacent to the outer surfaces of the side walls 5 and 6. The adjoining ends of the links 15, 16 are pivotally interconnected, as may be seen from Figs. 6 and 7; The link 15 is provided near its free end with a short bar 19 fastened to the link by the rivets 20 and slightly offset from the plane of the link. Two pins 25 are secured in serial alinement between said link and short bar 19, The other link 16 has at its free projecting beyond the lower edge of the link. so that in stretched condition of the reinforcing member (Fig. 6) the longer portion 22 of the link 16 rests on both of sald pins,
preventmg thereby a folding of these two links in downward direction. A relative pivotal movement of the links 15, 16 in upward direction, however, is rendered possible, as a pivot pin 23 secured to the link 15 and bar 18 extends through a slot 24 of the other I link 16. If force is applied from below'upwardly against the two adjoining ends of the two links, they will both turn about the transverse members 7 ,8 and also slide-relatively to each other the pin 23 being guided in theslot'24. The entire tub may thus be folded transversely and the two rods 7, 8
" of tlzhe support may be brought quiteclose to eac other.
' The upper edges of .the lateral walls 5, 6 of the tub are provided with overhanging flaps 25' which project above'the reinforcing members 15,16 and which are equipped at their inner surface with holding elements, like wire clips 26 sewed to the same and adapted to embrace the reinforcin' memglirectly supported by the transverse members es, as indicated at .18, so as to 7 8 of the camp chair frame but also by the rain-- is provi ed with a pin, as, for instance, the
stem of a wood-screw 30, the head 31 at a certain distance from the adjacent surface of the leg. The head 31 of this pin is provided with flattened portions 32; the opposite leg is provided with a striker plate 33 having a-slot 34: to permit the passage of the head 31 through the striker plate 33 provided this head is presented to said slot 1n a predetermined registering position. After the head 31 has been introduced into said slot 34 the two legs may turnedwith respect to each other, so as to prevent the head from leaving the slot.
A yielding foldable platform permitting the placing of a child or clothes thereon while the child isbeing dressed is combined with .the foldable tub. A roller'51 is ro- .tatably supported by means of brackets 52 transversely near one 'of the transverse members 7 or 8 and" attached to saidroller is a curtain 50, which upon unwinding from said roller may be stretched across t The free end of the curtain 50 may then be fastened, as shown in Fig. 3 to the opposite transverse member. as by a strap 53 or the like. The roller 51, supporting the yielding platform 50. may either be of a construction similar to the known shade rollers so. as to automatically rewind the yielding platform when the free end of the same is released from attachment to the transverse member. or a crank 54 may be secured to said roller so as to facilitate the from the other transverse supporting rod being provided with a pin having a head with flattened portions adapted for insertion through said slot into-the circular recess in-the other 1 e tub.
2. Ina foldable tub, the combination of a fabric forming the end walls and 'bottom of the tub, fabrics forming the side no A menses a Q walls thereof, avpair of links near the top of the tub, foldableside walls, reinforcing edges of said side walls, one of said links members for. said side walls near the top being provided with a, slot, and the other edges of the same, flaps on said side walls link having a pin assing through said slot, overlying said reinforcing members, and
5 said last named link being provided with clips secured to said flaps and embracing a pair of pins in longitudinal alinement on said reinforcing members.
said link, and thefirst named link being Intestimony whereof I afiix my signature provided with a projection overlying both in the presence of two witnesses.
