FUEL-FEEDING APPARATUS.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDREW LANz, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in F uel-Feeding Apparatus, anddo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to apparatus for feeding fuel to furnaces.
" The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient apparatus of this character in which the coal is evenly and uni-I formly distributed from a central point to the grates, the coal being lifted to a point above the grates and dropping by its own gravity onto the gratas, whereby slack and fine coal can be economically employed to produce a very hot fire, and all without the employment of manual labor.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The fire c iambers 5 are provided with the grates 6. Between each pair of lire chambers and elevated above sameis the deflector 7, built up of masonry and provided with the sloping faces 8.
Formed within the deflector 7 is the cylindrical chamber 9 lined with the casing 10, having a bottom portion 11. The discharge opening 9a is surrounded by the collar 9b for the purpose more fully hereinafter set forth.
Below the chamber 9 is the chamber 12. A vertical shaft 13 isjournaled in suitable vbearings 14, and the upper portion of said shaft carries the spiral conveyer 15.
At the lower end of the shaft 13 is the ratchet-wheel 16. An.arm 17 is mounted loosely on the shaft 13, and said arm carries the pawl 18 adapted to engage the ratchetwheel 16. The outer end ofl the arm 17 is connected to a rod 19 which is adapted to be reciprocated by any suitable power speeincatitn of Letters Patent. A hopper 21 is provided for delivering fuel to the chamber 9, said hopper being arranged on the outside of the furnace and communicating with said chamber by the opening 22. y
When my invention is in operation the coal in the form of slack and fine coal is delivered to the hopper 21, and passes thence into the chamber 9. Power having been applied to reciprocate the rod 19, an intermittent rotary movement is `imparted' to the shaft 13 and the spiral conveyer carried thereby, whereby thecoal contained within the chamber 9 is raised and discharged from the upper end of said chamber, the distributer 20 acting to divide the coal evenly to both sides of the deflector 7. By my `invention the raising of the doors is not necessary except for purposes of cleaning or repairs.
What I claim is: a
l. In fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a deflector between and elevated above the grates and independent thereof, and having a fuel passage formed therein, and means for delivering fuel from the upper end of said passage onto said deflector.
2. ln fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a wall separating the grates `and rising above them, yand having a fuel passage formed therein, and means for delivering fuel from the passage atthe upperend of said wall onto said grat/es.
3. In fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a partition between and rising above said grates, having downwardly inclined side faces, and having a fuel passage therein, and means for delivering the fuel. .from the upper end of said passage onto said faces.
i. ln fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair ef grates, of a partition wall between and rising Sabove said grates, having downwardly inclined side faces, and having a fuel passage formed therein, a collar surrounding the outlet of said passage, and means fer delivering the fuel from the upper end of said passage onto said faces.
5. In fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a deflector wall between and rising above said. grates, having a. fuel passage formed there in, and a spiral conveyer' arranged in said fuel passage. f
6. In fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a defiector wall between and rising above said grates, having downwardlyV inclined side faces, a fuel passage formed in said wall, a spiral conveyer arranged in said passage, and a distributer at the upper end of said passage.
7. In fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a deilector wall between and rising above said grates, having downwardly inclined side faces, a fuel passage formed in said wall, a spiral conveyer in said passage, and means for imparting an intermittent movement to said conveyer.
8. ln fuel feeding apparatus for furnaces, the combination with a pair of grates, of a deflector wall between and rising above said grates., having downwardly inclined side faces,l a fuel passage formed in said wall, a spiral conveyer in said fuelpassage, and a supply hopper contained in said fuel passage'.
