DRAFT-CHECKING DEVICE.
Application filed May 14, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST W. Conons, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft- Ohecking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to draft checking devices more particularly adapted for use in the construction of buildings and the like and has for its object to provide a device which will at all times assure an air tight and weatherproof joint between units of similar or different materials under all conditions. My improvement particularly contemplates avoiding the necessity for calking the joints which is unsatisfactory at best and must be continually renewed from time to time as physical changes in the units or in the calking takes place. A further object of my inventlon is to construct my device in its various forms in such a manner that the same may be readily applied in operative position as the construction of the building or the like proceeds. The construction and arrangement of my improvement will be clearly set forth in the description hereinafter and the features of novely thereof will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing which shows a sectional view illustrating an example of my invention.
As shown in the drawing the device comprises a sheet of metal or other material which is shaped to form a main section 11 and an edge member 14 extending at an angle to the main section. The edge member 14 depends from the section 11 and is turned back at its free edge as shown to form the flange 16 which if desired may also be provided with teeth along its free edge.
In using this type of my improvement for instance in combination with a brick wall and a door, window or other casing, the

ment with a wall of the groove 18", it being understood that the Width of the latter is less than the cross-sectional width of said flange 16*. Any attempt to withdraw the member 14 from the groove 18 byexerting a pull in an outward direction will cause said flange 16 to bite into said wall of the groove whereby said device is firmly connected with the door frame as will be clearly apparent. The wall 19 is now built up in proper relation to the frame in the usual way, the projecting section 11 extending into a mortar joint 2O between two courses of brick.
In order that the said member 11 may move freely relatively to the joint 20 the inner end thereof is covered with a covering of impregnated felt or other material 22 which engages opposite surfaces of said section and preferably forms an air space 23 and whereby said section is lubricated as it were. It will be understood that the covering 22 comprises a material which remains pliable, such as suitably impregnated felt, plastic slate composition or asphalt composition.
The device is simple in construction, is readily applied and does away entirely with the necessity for calking the joints, thus saving labor and expense and at the same time producing more uniform and effective results. The device also will not injure the units with which it is combined, and will not tearout portions of the mortar joints or of coalescent material if used in connection, for instance, with a wall of concrete.
Various changes in the specific forms shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
The combination of a unit having a pocket formed therein, said pocket having a relatively enlarged inner end portion, a pliable linin in surface engagement with the walls of sald pocket and conforming to the shape thereof, a second unit contiguous to the first member and provided with a groove, a sealing member bridging the joint between said units and extending into said pocket between and in surface engagement with the lining therein, the inner edge of said member being located within the enlarged portion of said pocket, an edge member extending from said sealing member into said groove in engagernent with one wall thereof and a flange extending at an inclination from said edge member into engagement with the opposite Wall of said groove whereby a withdrawal of 5 said edge member from said groove is resisted.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST W. CORDES.
