.. IM. Mora-Lineman mmx/ossa/wss P500512) STATES PATENT OFFICE ROYAL W. MGINTYRE, OF OREGON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO WM. H. AUKENY AND JOHN O. NEILIi, OF CLINTON, IOWA.
iMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED'BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,728, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL W. MOINTYRE, of Oregon, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, which are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing like letters in the different figures represent like parts.
Figure 1 is a top view Fig. 2 is an end view; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the adjustablebox; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring-holder.
Nature.
I My invention consists of devices for renderin g the bed-bottom extensible and adjustable to bedsteads of difierent widths.
A represents a four-square adjustable box, provided with flanges a, and on three of the sides of the box a stop or shoulder, 11, each. stop being a difterent distance from the end of the box, as seen in Fig.3. B represents cross-bars for holding the boxes A. These bars are made a proper thickness to fit in the boxes, and wide enough to extend above and form supports and stops for the boxes, and are provided with slots 0 c to receive the upper sides of the boxes, as shown in Fig. 2. 0 'represents head and foot guards, consisting of cross-bars, supported by two standards, for holding'the bed-clothes from the springs to protect the clothes from injury and from interferingwith the free operation of the springs. D represents metallic spring-holders, consisting of a metallic plate with two screw-holes, as shown in Fig. 4. of the drawing. E repre- -with the flanges a bearing against the ends of the bars, as shown at A in Fig.1 of the drawing then, by turning the boxes onefourth around on one side only of the bottom, it is adjusted to a wider bed, and so on till the three sides having stops are turned up, each turn increasing the width of the bottom; and by a corresponding change of theboxes on the other side of the bottom three additional and greater widths are produced.
When the bed-bottom is in proper position on the bedstead the edges of the flanges a rest on the top of the side rails, and being sharp embed themselves in the rails and thus prevent the bottom from sliding off the rails.
Claim.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ina bed-bottom, isa The adjustable boxes A, having flanges a and graduated stops b,'in combination with bars B, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of August, 1872.
ROYAL W. MCINTYRE.
