Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,713, dated November 5, v15572.
To alt whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY T. CUsHMAN, of North Bennington, in the county ot Bennington and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in Pencils; and do hereby declare that .the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements7 by which my invention may be distinguished from others of' a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by ALetters Patent.
My invention relates to lead-pencils ot' the ordinary form and construction; and the nature thereof consists in combining therewith an annular piece of rubber in the manner hereinafter specified, for the purpose of causing the pencil to be retained in the pocket.
In the accompanying plate ofdrawin g which illustrates my invention and forms a part ot' the specification thereof, in which corresponding parts are illustrated by similar letters, Figure l is a perspective view of a lead-pencil ot' the ordinary form with my improvement applied thereto 5 Fig. 2 illustrates in detail the slot cut upon the same; and Fig. 3 shows the form of the annular piece of rubber when detached from the pencil.
Upon the exterior surface of the pencil A is cut the annular slot B, which is intended to form a receptacle for the rubber c. The rubber c is of the annular form shown in the Iigure, and of such a size as to iit exactly with the said slot uB, where it is held in position by Vthe force of its own elasticity.
