IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD'SCRAPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,?011, dated October 29, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WooDARD THoMPsoN, of Gardiner, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RoadScrapers 5 and I do hereby declare that .the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw` ing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a roadcralperf7 as will be hereinafter more fully set Ort j In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my road-scraper. l

A represents an inclined beam. orh any suitable dimensions, connected by cross-bars B B with a runner, C. The rear end of this runner is even with the rear end of the beam A, but

A extends only about half the distance forward,

the runner being on aline parallel with the line of draft, while the beam inclines outward so as to gradually increase the distance between them. Between the front end of the runner and the side of the beam the tongue E is pivoted. The lower inner edges of both the beam and runner are provided with steel plates a--the same as the usual Scrapers. The bevel cut lengthwise of the road makes it very smooth and easy to handle. The machine is prevented from turning around to one side by means of a gate or rudder, D, hinged between the upper rear edges of the beam'` and runner; and said gate is provided with ali-evier or handle, G, which extends forward so as to be operated by the driver on his sea't a'tHl, arranged on the runner. On the outer side of the beam A, at the front end, is secured arounded faced shoe, I and above the same, to theiend of the beam, is attached a bar, J, by means of a screw, b, passing through a slot in said bar and into the beam. The rear end of this bar J is placed on the outer end of a lever, K, which carries a wheel, L, between said bar and the beam A. The bar J, while allowing the wheel L to move freely up and down, being pivoted by the piu b, limits the forward and backward movement ofthe lever K, and serves as a brace to said lever when the Wheel L comes in contact with a stone or other raised obstruction, as the wheel will be thrown back, when meeting such obstruction, until the front end of the slot in the bar J is brought to bear against the pin b, when the wheel is then moved over the obstruction and the strain thrown partially upon the bar J. The lever K is pivoted in a forked standard, P, and its inner end rests upon either of two oii'sets or shoulders, d d, on another post, R.

Vhen the lever is raised to the upper oEset or shoulder the entire beam A is raised up from the ground, so that the machine will move on the wheel L and the runner in goin g to and from the work; but when the lever is down on the lower shoulder the wheel is loose and the beam will operate.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The inclined beam and scraper A a, rounded faced shoe I, runner C, cross-bars B B, and tongue E, the several parts being constructed and arranged for operation substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The hinged gate or rudder D, with lever or handle G, combined with the runner C, beam A, and cross-bar B, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination of the slotted bar J, le ver K, wheel L, forked standard P, and shoule dered standard R, all constructed and arranged 1 with a roadscraper, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
