MARGEL ACHILLE VIOLET, 0F LEVALLOIS-PERRET, FRANCE.
IGNITING DEVICE FOR EXPLOSION -MOTORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
Application filed June 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,127.
residing at 67 Rue Rivay, Levallois-Perret,
Seine, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Igniting Devices for Explosion- Motors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In many cases explosion motors must be provided with a very expensive magneto, the
, cost of which sometimes exceeds that of the motor itself. The object of this invention is to do away with the inconvenience while obtaining some additional advantages.
These results are attained by means of a device shown 'by the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a part longitudinal sec tion of an explosion motor embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a four cylinde explosion eng .ie illustrating the invention.
It is to be observed that in a multicylindeitwo stroke motor, only one piston at a time comes in the compression position, by contradistinction with what is the case in a four stroke motor for instance, where a pair of pistons are in the same position at a time. Therefore by providing a two stroke four cylinder motor with a magneto without any distributer and giving two sparks at every revolution against a collecting ring and a single contact piece, and by causing such magneto to rotate twice faster than the motor, the four sparksper revolution which are necessary for the working of the motor will be obtained.
In order to distribute the sparks to the cylinders in proper time, it is suffici nt to provide the latter with sparking plugs having a centn insulated electrode a which latter is separated from the body I) of the plug by a distance which cannot be traversed by the spark, and is so positioned that when each piston reaches the compression position (as shown in the d nwing) the defiector o of the piston d is a very short distance apart from said electrode.
Consequently, if all the sparking plugs are connected to the magneto by a single wire c, it is clear that the spark produced at each quarter of a revolution will pass between that plug and that piston which are in relation together.
On the crank shaft 9 of the four cylinder engine f is mounted a gear wheel it twice the diameter of the gear wheel 2' that drives the.
armature of the magneto j, cur int from which is taken by a single wire a JO all the spark plugs b of the four cylinders.
A two stroke motor has been referred to above by way of example, but it is obvious that the igniting device under the in ention is also applicable to the fourstroke motors;
utilized, that is all.
This invention procm es the following ad vantages:
The magneto without any distributor can be a very small one without interfering with the ready starting of the motor, as said magneto rotates twice faster than the latter. This means simplicity and'cheapness.
On the other hand, as the spark is pr0- duced between two moving surfaces, the wear is even and very small and any fouling due to carbon deposits is impossible by the very fact of the electrodes being movable.
Moreover, the igniting device is very strong.
Lastly, the user oi the motor does not run the risk of, wrongly connecting the wires, which is a frequent cause of interru'ption in the working of the motor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is: l I
In a plural cylinder two-stroke explosion engine, the combination with the cylinders thereof; of a spark plug extending into-the compression space of each cylinder, a piston to send current a spark out of two will not in that case be through said wire at each quarter cycle of operations.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribin witnesses.
