To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S'rANrsLMvsKr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ignition apparatus and more particularly to that type of apparatus commonly known as spark plugs. The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved type of spark gap which will not readily carbonize and in consequence become inoperative.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of electrode so designed as to provide an annular series of spark gaps so that should one of the gaps fail to s function the others will continue to operate.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 5 designates the shell of the plug preferably hexagonal in cross section and is provided at one end with a. threaded nipple 6 designed to fit into an opening in the cylinder of an ordinary internal combustion engine. The usual packing nut 7 is provided and fits into the end of thc shell 5 opposite the nipple 6, and when in place firmly clamps the insulator 8 in proper position.
.Extending longitudinally through the insulator 8 is an electrode 9 to the upper end of which is attached the feed wire. 10 leading from a suitable high-tension generator (not shown). In the lower end of the nipple 6 is a bore 13 for the reception of an angular arm 14 formed at one end of a spirally bent wire 15 constituting the cooperating electrode. As shown in the drawings, the end 16 of the wire 15 is slightly below the plane ofthe opposite end of the wire so that the portion. of the electrode exposed to the action of the sparks will extend spirally around the surface of the wire.
In use the device is connected in an engine cylinder in the customary manner and connected in a high tension circuit. Obviously sparks will jump the gaps between the ends of the points 12 and the wire 15. It is apparent that the distance between the ends of the points and the wire may be lengthened by bending the points as shown in Figure 3, or said distance may be shortened by straightening said points.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, ,combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
That is claimed is A spark plug comprising a hollow body, an insulator seated centrally therein, extending therea'bove and containing an axial opening, an electrode rotatable in said insulator. a collar fixed on said electrode,
seated in a recess in the insulator, means for clamping said electrode, a plurality of spaced curved terminals extending horizontally outward from the lower end of said electrode, said terminals presenting tangential points disposed in different directions in the same plane and being of equal radius, and a second electrode fixed in said body, to extend in a single helical convolution spaced circumjacent said terminals.
