Description

W. C. BROWN.
COMBUSTION SYSTEM. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 22. 1911.
Patented. Dec. 30, 19l9.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\YILLIAM CLINTON BROWN, OF SYRACUSE NEW YORK, ASSIGlNOR TO EDWARD N. TRUMP, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK. I
coMBUsTIeN SYSTEM.
d'aga, {State of NewYoi-k. have invented new and useful Improvements in Combustion Svstems, of which the following is a specifi- 'My invention relates to ir'e n 'e e tS in c mbustion system for liquid fuel. The obj'ect is to provide improved method and means for securing the proper feed of air and fuel and the proper ratio of same.
:Referring tothe drawings which illustrate merely by way ofexample, suitable embodiment of. my inventiontion. 7
Fig. 2 is a detail in elevation of the adjusting device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plunger pump. Similar nunierzfinr fer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The fan or blower 5 delivers air from the channel 6 through the conductor 7 to the fire box or combustion chamber 8 be.- neath the boiler. This air is preferably passed over the hot surfaces of the portion of conductor 7, which extends beneath the fire box and contiguous thereto and then upwardly with a reverse. turn to deliver thereto, as shown in Fig. 1. so that said portion of the conductor is subject to the mat of the fire box. in order to warm the air before it is delwered to the fire box.
The blower 5 is driven by anv suitable Fi ure l is a diawrammatic view in seeb h tion device. I have providetl-the cylinder Specification of Letters .Patnt. PatentediDem30,1919.-
Application filed June 22, 1917. Serial No. 17,293. v
In order to vary the amount'ot' heat inthe tire box means are providedfor reducing the amount of air supplied thereto, an-d also means for reducing the supply of liquid fuel. means be automatically controlled and also that these varying means be so connected together thatthey will vary in proper proportion to maintain a proper combustible mixture when varying the amount of heat required.
When used in'connection with steam boilers thisvarviiig apparatus may. be. o erated by the steam pressure or by the temperature of steam or by both, in order'that the coinbustion may be properly 'prop...rtioned t0 maintain-a fixed steam pressure or tem -)era.- ture-under-a varying demand. .1
.Asan example of such automatic regulaconnected by pipe 36 with a suitable steam pressure or temperature controlled device not shown. In cylinder is operated the piston 37 under' the influence of sprin 38. Piston 37 is provided with rod 35) whie is pivotally connected at 20 with the lever 21. This lever 21 is mounted on the fulcrum 22 which is arbitrarily movableand adjustable with respect to said lever 21, by
means of the following mechanism; the ful-.
crum 22 comprises the trunnioned sleeve 22 slidable on lever 21. The trunnions are mounted in the bracket 1'7 which is movably mounted on frame 18 and is provided with a threaded. lug l7 engaging with the screw 19 provided with the hand wheel 19'.
means not shown. The. shaft of the motor.
is connected by the beveled gear-f) with the shaft 10 carrying the actuator plate 11 for actuating the plungers 12 of {the fuel pump l3. This pump delivers fuel from the reser voir 1- through tubing 15 to the fire box 8 or into the air conductor leading thereto.
It. is also preferable to have this tubing 15 pass through a heated '/.one provided by the portion-of conductor 7 which is continuous to the tire box. as above described. before delivering into the tire box, so that the liquid fuel will either be gasilicd or partially oasitied before being lIltl'Ot'lllCOd into the tire box and it shall preferably be sprayed into the air at or near the entrance t the fire box. so there will be no'dan er of the flame working back into the air duct.
lVhen it 'is desired to shift the sleeve 22 either to the right or the, left on lever 21. one of the lock nuts #16 is moved away from the sleeve and tl1e-:;;; erew 19 is turned in the required-direction to shift the sleeve It is usually desirable that these.
and fulcrum on lever 21a desired, whereupon the lock nuts are made tight on each side of sleeve 22' to maintain said position of adjustment. Thewalve 23 in air duct 6, is provided with a lever 24 connected by rod 25 with the lever 21 between the: fulcrum 22 andthe pivot, connection 20.
The plate 11, while rotatable with shaft 10. has a rocking or pivotal connection with said shaft. This plate 11 is connected at a point near its outer peripheryby the link 26 with a collar 27 slidably mounted on shaft 10. The lever 28 is pivotally mounted at 29 on a fixed support, one end engaging with the collar 27 while the other end is connected by the rod 80 with the end of lever 21 on the right hand side of-the fulcrum In operation we may assume the parts to be in the position when the steam pressure is high, and it is desirable to reduce the temperature in the fire box by cutting down the supply of 'fuel. The pressure of the boiler communicated through pipe 36 maintains piston 37..against the actuation of spring 38 in such position as will closeor nearly close the valve 23 as desired, while at the same time the plate 11 is COIIQSPODCllIIgly held in such position that in its rotation with shaft 10 it will fail to actuate 01' only slightly actuatethe pump plunger-s 12. It will be understood that when the plate is held in a c horizontal position it will be neutral, that is, rotate without actuating the plungers, and the more it is tilted out of the horizontal the greater will be the degree of actuation of the pump plungers.
Thus as the steam pressure in the boiler, varies the supply of air and fuel to the fire box will be correspondingly and automatically varied.
In order'to secure the proper proportion or ratio of air and liquid fuel for any particular condition, the position of fulcrum 22-, with respect to the connecting points-of rods '25 and 30 with lever 21 is adjusted in the manner above described, thus coniroili n the relative actuation of the air valve and fuel pump-as desired. When once this ada controlling mechanismfor said pump, a
pivoted lever having operative -connection with the air valve and fuel pump controllingmechanism, and pressure'responsivemieans for 0 rating the lever.}-"
2. Ihe combination recited in olaimlin which are provided means for arbitrarily adjusting the fulcrum of said lever rel'ative'ly 'to the points of connection with the air valve and'fuel pump controlling meclr'a nism. v
3. The combination recited in-claim 1"in which are provided means forming heated surfaces over which-the air passes before it is'delivered to the fire box;
- 4. The combination defined in claim I' in which are provided means forming a heated -zone through which a portion of theliquid fuel conductor passes before delivering-to the fire box;
