INDICATOR FOR VEHICLES.
Application led April l1, 1916.
To all whom t may concer/t:
Be it lknown that VVILIJAM F. llU'rCH- leon. Sr., a citir/.ei'i ot the United States, residing' at Fort lVorth, in the county of Tarrant and Stute of Terras, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicators for Vehicles, of which the followingis a specification.
illy-invention relates to indicators and more particularly to indicators for moving vehicles and the object is to provide a simple and inexpensive indicator which can be easily operated and to provide a device for preventing accidents and to avoid danger. il. person using an automobile is required to give some sign when he is going' to st op or malte aturn. This done usually wlth the hand. The object of this invention is to provide a device to take the place ot the hand and which will be much more ellcient than the hand and which can he used where the hand cannot he used. The advantage is that the person using the vehicle can operate a sign on either side of the vehicle with very little elliort and attention.. @ther objects and advantages will'be fully explained in the following description and the invention will he more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which torni a part ot this application.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic. elevation oit the improved indicator set forth herein. Fig. 2 an elevation of one of the indicators, showing in detail the operatmpj1 mechanism. Figi". is a diagrammatic view of the make and break contacts.
lill
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
indicators are set forth lierein which can 4he mounted. one on each side, of a. vehicle. Casinos 1 and 2 are provided to contain the iudicliitors and their operating1 mechanism. l`hese casinos are to he attached to the ve hicle in any suitable manner and in any desirable position. Pnsh'louttons 3 and 4 are provided ttor operating "the ilnlicators and these push buttons can he placed near the seat oi? the driver or clraulieur. battery 5 may he located at any desirable position. A solenoid G is located in each casing 1 and The solenoid is provided with the usual Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented Dec. Btl, Serial No. 90,37l.
plunger armature 7. A.. standard i is mounted on and made rigid with the sole noid casing. A block lever 9 is fulcrumed on the standard 8. A link bar is pivotally connected to the plunger armature i and to they block lever E). A tubular varm l0 is made rigid with the lever 9 and a lamp socket 12 for electric lamp 11 is attached to the arm 10. Contacts 13, which may he of spring metal, are attached to the lever 9 which should be of some non-conducting` material. lVires 1-1 are attached 'to these contacts 1B and run through the lever 9 und through the arm and connected to ,the socket l2 in the usual n'ianner of making electrical connection with lamp sockets.
fires and 16 are electrically connected with the battery 5 and to the solenoid 5 for energizing the solenoid. Wires 17 and 18 are connected to the wires l5 and 16 respectively and extended upwardly and into the stainlard 8 and electrically connected to contacts 19 which are attached to the stand ard 8. A collar 20 is attached to the socket 12 for the purpose of attaching a globe 21 vtor protectingl the lamp 11. The glolo'e ,21 is preferably made in the form of a hand which can be plainly seen in the dark or yin the light. Duplicate mechanism is mounted in the casing 2 and wires 22 and Q3 are connected respectively with wires 15 and 1G 'lor the solenoid G in casing 2 and. wires A and are connected to wires F22 and respectively for the light circuit in easing: 2. The casing' l may he rnountl-:d on one side of the vehicle and the casing El mounted ou the other side ot the vehicle. Various changes in the sizes, proportions and arrangements ot the several parts ot the mechanism her ,in shown may be made without departing from my invention.
The operation is as follows: Pressure on the button 3 will energize the solenoid 5. The armature 7 will he d awn down into the solenoid and by means of the linlr loar 26;. the lever Q will he drawn down until the contacts 13 are brought against the contacts l0 which action will close the circuit `for the lamp 11. At the Sametime, the arm 10 will he thrown to a suhstantially horinontal position., as indicated'in Fig. 1. l ust as the arm 1() 'reaches the horizontal position. the circuit is closed by the contacts and the lamp ll is illuminated.
