AIR-PUMP.
Application led September e, 1918.
T0 'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ViLAs L. SNYDER, a citizen ot the United States, and a resi dent of Douglas, in the county of Garfield and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Pumps, o1 which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in air pumps, and has for its object to provide means for use in connection with double cylinder air pumps for converting them into pumps of the single cylinder type.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section o1" a double. cylinder pump converted into a single cylinder;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of the lower end of the pump;
Fig. 3 is a partial front view at the upper end of the pump.
The double cylinder pumps consist of a base 1 of suitable size, which has internally threaded nipples 2 and 3, the nipple 2 being of larger diameter than the nipple 3. A barrel has threaded engagement with the nipple 2 and a barrel of smaller diameter has engagement with the nipple 3, the said barrel not being shown in the present instance. The plunger 5, which is of usual construction, is connected to a plunger rod 6 having a handle 7 detachably connected therewith. In the double pump this handle is connected with both plungers, namely, the plunger 5 and the plunger in the small cylinder (not shown) so that the single handle simultaneously operates the two plungers.
When the small cylinder or the packings thereof becomes worn the pump must be discarded. In the present invention., however, means is provided for converting the double pump into a single pump, by removing the small barrel or cylinder and making the hose connection 8 at the nipple 3. With this object in view I provide a union or coupling 9 which has an annular rib 10 inter- Specification of Letters Patent.

mediate its ends, and both the rib and the body of the union are threaded.
Thus three connections are provided in connection with the union, permitting it to be connected to nipples of the same size but with different threading, and with nipples of different sizes. The hose 8 is connected with the union 9. rThe top cap of the double pump is also removed, and is replaced by the cap 11 shown in Figs. l and 3. rIhis cap is held in place by a split collar 12 which is clamped on the barrel by means of a screw bolt and nut '13, the bolt passing through radial lugs on the split collar.
rIhe collar has upstanding lugs 14, which have openings for receiving pins 15 on the collar 11. `With the attachment consisting of the union 9 and the cap 11 any double cylinder pump maybe quickly transformed into a simple single cylinder pump. The handle 7, it will be noticed, has two openings 16 for connection with the plunger rods of the double pump. In order to make the handle tit, a single hole 17 is bored for the plunger rod 6, the said opening 17 being between the openings 16. No special tools are required for converting the double pump into the single pump7 and no particular skill.
It will be noticed that the union is internally threaded at both ends so that either end can be used for engagement by the hose.
I claim:
In an attachment ot' the character specilied, a'split collar having means for clamping it on the barrel of a pump, a cap having an opening for the plunger rod adapted to tit over the end of the cylinder, the collar having upstanding perforated lugs and the cap having pins for engagement by the lugs to hold the cap in place.
VILAS L. SNYDER.
