Description

T. J. VAUGHT.
END GATE.
' APPLICATION FILED mac. 11. I911.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY ll STATES ATEN BEIGE.
END-GATE.
T0 a-ZZ whom it may concern.-
-Be it known that I, THOMAS J. VAUGHT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to end gate fasteners and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient means for firmly looking an end gate upon a wagon body;
Another object ofthis invention is the production of a simple and eficient means which will not only look the end gate, but
' applied to an end gate,
Fig. 3 is a section taken online 3-8 of Fig. 1,
Fig, 4 is a top plan view of one end of the end gate, the securing link being shown in section. V
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the wagon which is provided with a plurality of side members 2 carrying the end gate guiding members 3 and the angle guiding plates at. This structure is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. An anchoring pin 5 is carried by each plate 1 and this anchoring pin 5 is provided with a notch upon one side thereof for the purpose of receiving the an choring links 6.
The end gate 7 is mounted between the guiding members 3 and the guiding plates 1 and this end gate 7 carries a pairof slidable clamping members 8. Each sliding member 8 isprovided with an elongated slot 9 through which slot 9 pass the guiding bolts 10 carried by the retaining plate 11. A retaining plate 11 fits over each slidable clamping member 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The retaining plate 11' will constitute an efficient means for holding the clamping members in engagement with the Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December17, 1917 Serial No. 207,594.
end gate and the spaced relation of thesecuring pins 10 will cause the clamping members to be guided in a proper path across the rear face of the end gate 7, as these clamping members are shifted. Each clamping member 8 is provided with an enlarged eye 12 for the purpose of engaging the anchoring links 6 as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The inner end of oneof the clamping members is provided with an outwardly extending tubular portion 13 having a notch 14 formed centrally thereof within which notch 1 1 is pivotally mounted a clamping or tightening link rod 15, the same being held in engagement with the tubular portion 13 by means of a securing pin 16.
The opposite clamping member 8 is provided with an outwardly extending foot 17 which is provided with a notch 18 centrally thereof, the tightening link rod 15 fitting within this notch 18 as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The foot 17 is provided with a concave pocket 18 upon the inner face thereof for the purpose of receiving the projecting nose 19 of the cam clamping lever 20. This clamping lever 20 is provided with a bifurcated end 21 within which bifurcated end 21 is pivotally mounted the tightening link 15 by means of a pin 22. The clamping lever 20 is provided with an outwardly curved finger gripping tongue 23 for the purpose of permitting the lever 20 to be easily engaged by the finger of an operator for the purpose of swinging the clamping lever 20,
By considering Fig. 2 it will be seen that the lever 20 may be swung outwardly for causing the projecting nose 19 to be re leased from the concave pocket 18, in this way permitting the tightening link 15 to be released from the notch 18 to disengage or disconnect the respective clamping members 8. The anchoring links 6 may then be readily swung out of engagement with the pins 5 for the purpose of unlocking the gate 7 from the sides 2 of the body 1.
It of course should be understood that the fastening device illustrated and described may be employed for tightening any suitable device without changing the several parts making up the present structure. It should be further understood that certain obvious detail mechanical changes may be made in the present device without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claim. By considering Figs. 1 and 2 it Will be seen that the clamping device will not only hold th end gate 7 in a proper position but will also brace the rear ends of; the side members 2.
What is claimed is An end gate fastener comprising a pair of substantially flat slidably mounted clamping members provided with longitudinally extending slots formed therein and projecting substantially the entire length thereof, each clamping member provided with an outwardly projecting eye formed thereon at one end,,links engaging said eyes for facilitating the locking of the end gate in engagement with the body of a vehicle, an elongated flat securing plate of the same width as said clamping member, engaging each clamping member and overhanging the outer face of last mentioned eye, and a clamping lever pivotally mounted upon said last mentioned eye and provided with means for engaging said projecting foot to firmly clamp said lever in engagement with said foot and drawing said slidably mounted clamping members together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1 in presence of two witnesses.
