Description

e. F. TUCCIARONE! WELT AND FLAP MARKER.

GERARD F. TUCt'lIARONE, OF RGGl-IESTER, NEW YORK.
WELT AND FLAP MARKER.
To all whom it may concern: 7
.Be it knownthat I, GERARD F. TUocIA- noun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Welt and Flap Markers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the This invention relates to a welt and flap marker and has for'its object to provide a device of this kind which is simple and inexpensive to make, and which provides a means for rapidly and accurately performing this operation. In tailoring shops it has been the practice to mark the pocket welt and flaps before assembling the garment,,by hand, wooden, or, more frequently, cardboard forms or straight edges being used for the purpose. This operation is not only very slow, and therefore expensive, but owing to the personal element and the fact that the rulers and patterns used wear unevenly, is very inaccurate. The object of my invention is to provide a device in which a metal straight edge is used, which is adapted to clamp the work to the work bench or table on which the goods is marked, and an adjustable gage to cooperate with the straight edge or clamp. To theseand other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of arts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a welt and flap marker constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a work bench or table showing my invention applied thereto, 7
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1, V
Fig.4.- is an enlarged sectional View of one of the plungers in itsguide,
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Flg. and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the means for securing the gage inadjusted position. V V V My improveddevice comprises a bed plate Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dg 30, 1919.

or support 1 which is secured or supported. 1n a work bench or table 2. A portion of the :has a groove or recess 3 in its upper surface which extends rearwardly from the front edge thereof. In this recess is slidably mounted a block 4. formed integral with a gage bar or plate 5. In the bottom of the groove-3 is formed a slot extending through the plate 1 and a bolt6 extends through the gage. 5 and the groove and receives a thumb nut 7 at its lower end and serves to secure the gage in adjusted position to the bed plate 1. Adjacent the groove 3 is provided an indicating scale 8 which serves for quickly and accurately adjusting the gage plate in desired position. Formed integrally with the bed plate 1 and extending downwardly therefrom is a pair of guides or sleeves 9, each of which receives a plunger 10 which is shouldered at each end. The upper ends of the plungers 10 receive the ends of a clamp or bar 11 which is secured to the plunger by means of nuts or otherwise. At its rear side the clamp 11 is provided with a straight edge 12 against which a crayon or other instrument is guided in marking the goods. Secured by means of nuts to the lower end of the plungers 10 is a bar or yoke 12 which connects the plungers. It will be noted that by this structure the bar 12 plungers 10 and clamping bar 11 form a single unit which is slidably mounted in the guides 9. A contractile coil spring 13 has one end connected to the yoke 12 and the other end anchored in a lug 14 depending from the bed plate 1 and serves to hold the clamping bar 11 in elevated position as shown in Fig. 3. Also connected with the bar 12 is a hook 15 to which is connected one end of a chain 16, the lower end of which is connected to the end of a foot treadle 17. The foot trcadle 17 is pivotally supported in a pair of 18 resting on or adjacent the floor. A spring 19 is coiled about the pivot of the foot treadle and serves to hold the forward end elevated as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The rearend of the treadle may be provided with a flange 20 against which the heel of the foot may rest in operating the device. V
ings.
In using my device for marking a pocket welt or flap of a garment the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, with the gage 5 adjusted to properly position the flap to be marked. The clamping bar 11 is normally elevated, as shown in Fig. 3, and the flap inserted with the edge against the gage, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the draw- The foot treadle is now operated to move clamping bar 11 into clamping engagement with the flap against tension of the spring 13. The operator now marks the goods along the straight edge 12 after which the foot treadle is released and the spring 13 raises the clamp and releases the workpiece which can now be removed and a new one inserted.
By the use of my device the flaps and welts of pockets can be marked much more rapidly than by means hitherto employed. Since the straight edge 12 is made of metal and the distance between the gage 5 and 12 is accurately fixed all flaps marked by my device without changing the position of the gage 5 are marked alike and accurately.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. In a marking apparatus, the combination with a support, of a plate carried thereby, a clamp having a straight edge, supportmg means for the clamp permitting a movement thereof toward and from said plate, a treadle for moving the clamp toward said plate, means for automatically moving the clamp away from said'plate, a gage carried by said plate for movement thereon toward and from the clamp in parallelism-therewith, and an indicating scale for the gage.
2. In a marking apparatus, the combination with a support, of a plate thereon, a clamp movably carried by said plate having a ruling guide thereon substantially parallel with one edge of said support, means normally holding said clamp in spaced relation to said plate, a treadle projecting transversely of said edge of the support for moving said clamp toward said plate and a gage supported on said plate for movement toward and from said clamp.
