To allwiwmit may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. GRIFFIN, a
. subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Pearce, Province of Alberta, and Dominion of Canada, haveinvented certain. new and useful Improvements in Door- Checks; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This mventlon relates to door checks and has particular reference to a foot operated not accidentallyjar looseandwhicli will .yield should the door become. violently pushed floor.
lVith these'and other objects in view as without liability of injury ,to the will appear as the description proceeds, the
invention comprises the various novel tea tures of construction, combination and ar-' rangements of partsas will belfully described hereinafter andafterward specifically claimed.
Referring tothe drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the door check attached to. the lower part of the door.
7 taken on a plane indicated by the line 1- 1 on Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 represents a sectional elevation of the lower end of the plunger rod and tip.
I11 order that the construction and opera-f tion of the invention may be readily comprehended by those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, I have illustrated an improved embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, and will now proceed to fully describe the same, in connection with said drawings in which 1 is the casing of the door check and 2 the cover plate l therefor, which latter is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
unfit for effective use.

with laterally extending ribs 3 to fit within the casing and hold thecover plate against casual displacement with respect to the cas ing. The device is adapted to be attached to the bottom part of a door by screws or other fastening elements 1 which extend through the casing and. cover plate.
A spring 5, which may be of leaf spring or spring wire construction, is positioned horizontally w thin the casmg and has one end rlgidly but removably connected to the casing as indicated at 6. The casing 1 carries a supporting lug 7 which projects laterally beneath the spring adjacent its anchored end.
The free end of the spring is pivotally connected as at 8 to the plunger rod 9 mounted forv vertical sliding movement through the bottom of the casing as at 10.
This plunger rod has detachably connected to its lower end a floor engaging tip .which comprises a metallic socket l1 threadedly connected to the plunger rod and holding a piece of rubber or other desirable floor engaging material 12. This tip is made removableso that it can be readily replaced by another one when it' has become worn, or
The rubber or material 12 will prevent the floor from being injured. 7
A lever 13 is positioned horizontally withj in the casing 1 above the spring 5 and is abnormally in spaced horizontal relation thereto. One end of the lever is provided with a slot 14: to receive a pivot pin 15 car ried by the casing, 'at a point adjacent with where the spring 5 is anchored to the easing. The other end of the leveris provided with a foot piece 16 which projects laterally through the L shaped slot 17 in the casing. The lever 13 is also provided at a point intermediate its ends with a dependingfinger 18 bearing upon the spring 5 at a point adjacent its free end.
In the operation of the device and when it is desired to check the door in open position, the foot piece 16 is depressed and pushed horizontally into the horizontal portion of the L shaped slot 17 where it will remain under tension of the spring 5 until disengaged by the foot. This actuation of the lever 14 will force the plunger rod downwardly until the tip thereof lockingly engages the floor, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
It is to be further noted by this construction that the tip of the plunger rod will he held in locking engagement with the floor under a yielding spring tension whereby should the door be pushed violently, the plunger will yield from its engagement with the floor without any liability of injuring the floor.
It is to be further understood that the device as described herein can be used with equally as good effect upon a window frame and sash to serve as an anti-rattling device or a window check.
lVhile I have described the principle of operation together with the device I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that such changes in construction and arrangement of parts may be made when desired as within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a plunger slidable therein to bear against a floor or other object, a leaf spring having one end anchored to the casing, said spring engaging said plunger to retract it from the object, and a manually operable member mounted in the casing to contact with the spring and bend it to move said plunger against the object, said member and easing having means for holding said member when moved into contact with the sprin 2. A door check comprising a casing, a spring positioned horizontally Within the casing and having one end anchored to the casing, a plunger rod mounted through the bottom of the casing for vertical sliding movement and pivotally connected to the free end of said spring, a lever positioned horizontally within the casing above said spring and provided with means'for engagement with said spring, a foot piece carried by the lever projecting late 'ally through the casing whereby the lever may be depressed to force said plunger into engagement with the floor against the tension of said sprin 3. A door check comprising a casing adapted to be attached to the lower part of the door, a supporting lug carried by the casing adjacent one end thereof, a spring positioned horizontally within the casing over said supporting lug and having one end anchored to the casing, a plunger rod positioned through the bottom of the casing for vertical movement and having its inner end pivotally connected to the free end of said spring, a lever positioned horizontally Within the casing above said spring and provided with means for engagement with said spring, and a foot piece carried by the lever projecting through the casing whereby the lever may be actuated to force the plunger into engagement with the floor against the tension of said sprin 4. A door check comprising a casing' for attachment to the lower part of a door, a spring positioned horizontally within the casing and having one end anchored to the casing, a plunger rod mounted through the bottom of the casing for vertical movement and pivotally connected to the free end of said spring, a lever mounted within the easing above said spring and having one end provided with a slot, a pivot pin extending through said slot, means carried by the said lever engaging said spring, and a foot piece carried by the free end of the lever'and projecting through an L shaped slot inthe casing whereby said lever may be depressed and moved longitudinally of the casing to lockingly engage the plunger rod with the floor under spring tension.
5. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a plunger slidable therein to contact with a floor or other object, a leaf spring anchored within the casing and engaging said plunger to retract it from the object, and a manuallyoperable lever mounted in the casing and having a portion to bear against the spring and bend it for moving the plunger against the object yieldingly, said lever and easing having means for holding the lever when it is moved to bend the spring.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
