Be it known that I, HENRY ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residui' at Mellen, in the county of Ashlandand Sitatel Vof llflisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in `l/YJindow;Shades, oii which the -following is a specification.
This invention relates to window shades and more particularly to the class of adjustable roller shades `for windows, doors, or the like. p j
rllhe primary object of the invention is the provision of a shade of this character wherein the same can be readily raised or lowered relative to the window frames and locked in its adjusted position, the shade being of novel construction so as to exclude light, dust, dirt, and the like when completely closed with respect to the window irame. Y
Another object is the provision of a shade of this character wherein the saine will be held smooth in its adjusted position and can be readily raised and lowered as the occasion requires.
.A 'further object of the invention is the provision of a shade ot this character wherein the lock for holding the same in adjusted position is of novel form to permit the shade to be pulled down or lowered, yet
' it will be locked against raising movement until the lock is released.
A still further object or the invention is the provision of a shade of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture and installation.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangements oi' parts as will be hereinafter fullydescribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended. l

Referring more particularly to the drawing, A designates generally a window frame which is of the ordinary well known construction having the usual sliding sash B and View on the line 3-3 `upon this window frame at the inner side thereof 1s mounted the adjustable shade Ahereinafter -fully described.
ylhe adjustable shade comprises a spring winding roller 5 of the usual construction having fixed thereto one end of a flexible shade 6 adapted to be wound thereon and unwound therefrom in the raising and lowering of the said shade, the roller 5 being journaled in brackets 7 which are of the ordinary well known construction fixed to the window frame at the desired point near the head thereof. Secured to the inner edges of the vertical stiles ci the window frames are vertical guides each comprising a pair of sections 8 whichserve as companions and are eut to form a longitudinal guide bore 9 therebetween, and a slot 10 communicating with the bore and opening through the outer edge oit said guide while within these bores 9 on the guides are stationarily mounted vertical guide rods l1 which are held in any suitable manner centrally located within of increased internal diameter with respect to the cross sectional area of the guide rods 11 and slide-ble upon these guide rods are longitudinal edge casements 12 formed on the shade G, the rods l1 being extended from the base of the window frame A to a point close to the position of the roller 5 for the shade 6 while theguides including the sections 8 are coextensive with these rods and by reason of the particular slidable connection of the flexible shade 6 with the rods and working interior of the guides the said shade when drawn or pulled down will exclude dust, dirt or thelike from an entrance through the window. Furthermore, when the shade is pulled down, light will be excluded through the window and also a maximum amount of air will be shut out from' entering' the inclosur'e: through the window he ehr'ieufa Carried at the lower end of the shade 6 is a reinforcing bar 13 which is formed with bifurcated ends 14 in which are journaled friction rollers 15, the periphery of each being engaged with the `guide rod 11 next thereto so that the shade G when adjusted will move uniforn'ilyY and be held in smooth condition. The rollers are journaled on pins 15a.
Formed at intervals in the outer edges of the guides are notches or sockets 15 While suitably mounted in the bar 13 are springheld slidable latch pins 16 having beveled ends 17 so that the same will ride out of the notches 15 when entering.;` the same on the pulling down of the shade 6 or will lock in the said notches or sockets 15 to prevent the raisingy o-fj the shade thereby locking the saine in adjusted position. Each latch pin 16 has a slot 161 slidably engaging the adjacent pivot piu 15a.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the Window shade will be clearly understood.

Having thus described my invention, l claim:
