AUTGMOBILE BUFFER.

one or both of these strips. As shown in Fig. 4 these split ends. of the strip 6 may be forced out laterally and formed with suitable holes 24 to laccommodate the U-bolt 12 and in this way the connector is held in longitudinal alinement with one of the members while tightly holding them together as by suitable nuts 26 and the connector plate 25, if desired. It is further understood that legs of the U-bolts are spaced just far enough apart to be brought into close engagement when tightened with the edges of the connected strips so as to thus hold them against verticaL movement. It is, of course, tunderstood that such alining or bifurcated ends may be arranged on any of the strips to be connected together either on one of the outer strips 6 as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, or on one of the inner strip ends l() wherethe device has a similar alining holding action. In this case, of course, the attaching member 1 has a part of its forward portion concentrically curved so as to be parallel and in close contact with this adjacent buffer member 10, while the eX- treme end 9 of this attaching memberis preferably brought over into close engagement with the end 5 of the front member so to be directly held in Contact therewith. This arrangement makes it easy to laterally adjust the buffer strips, since the strips 3, 4 may, for example, be slipped together to the extent of several inches without noticeably or undesirably affecting the curve of the front impact receiving member. adj ustment may be resorted to to bring the attaching members somewhat closer together or these attaching members may be independently adjusted, if desired, after the desired buffer width has been secured by regulating the position of the two lapping frontmembers. f-
ln the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a single front or impact receiving member 14 is shown. This spring strip member may nbe outwardly bowed and be uniformly curved so that its projecting ends 17,18 may, if desired, have the same curvature as the central part of this member. The rearwardly extending attaching members 15, 16 are preferably forwardly and outwardly curved and provided with connecting portions 19, 20, curved so as to be substantially concentric with the adjacent portions of the front or impact receiving member to which they may bc connected in any suitable way. Retainer clips 21, 22, may be used for this purpose and may coperate with one or more retainer holes, such as 30, 31, in the ends of these attaching members. In this way the clips are positively held. upon the attaching members so that they are always in position to be tightened and securely hold the parts against vertical movement.
This invention has been described in con- Such an nection with a number of illustrative embodiments, forms, proportions, parts, arrangements, materials, method of connection and use, to the details of which disclosure the-invention is not of course to be limited, since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patuent is set fortl in the appended claims:
