To all whom t may concern j Be it known that I, FRANK Las'rfiwsies, a citizen of Russia, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States of Ame-rica, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful lmproveinents in Potato-Grating Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
The primary object of the invention is the provisionof a machine adapted for easily and quickly grating large quantities of potatoes, the structure possessing great strengthand being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a potato grater in which potatoes may be positioned for grating whenever adesired quantity of grated potatoes is desired, a storing space being also arranged in the machine as well as means for removing the grated potatoes at will. a
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine capable of grating different kinds of separated vegetables simultaneously, parts of the machine being readily disassembled for cleaning when desired.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

My invention provides a'base 10 having upright sides 11 and opposite ends 12 and 13, one of said sides having a cut-away portion or door-way 14 adjacent the forward end 13 of the machine.
A block 15 is secured between the sides 11 upon opposite ledges 16 by means of screws 17 and is provided with a plurality of chambers or hoppers 18 longitudinally entending therethrough. A plate 19 is slidably mounted upon the rear extensions 16 of the ledges 16 with rods 2O projecting from the plate and secured thereto, a piston 21 being provided upon each rod slidably mounted within the adjacent Vchamber 18.
An operating screw 22 is threaded through the central portion of the plate 19 at a point where the plate is provided with a boss 23, the inner end of the screw being swiveled as at 24 to a centrallyprojecting hub 25 upon the adjacent end of the block 15. The screw 22 is journaled in the rear wall 12 by means of a reduced portion 26 of the screw while a wheel 27 having a crank 28 is mounted upon the outer free end of the screw 12 at the rea-r 'end of the machine. It will be evident that byv turning the wheel 27 by vmeans ofthe crank 28, the screw 22 will revolve for feeding the plate 19 toward and away from the block 15, thereby reciprocating the pistons 21 within the chambers 18.
A shaft 40 is journaled through the forward wall 13 of the machine having its inner end journaled within a recess or thrust bearing 41 centrally provided in the forward end of the block 15. A gra-ter 42 in the form` of a disk is mounted upon the shaft 40 by means of a hub 29 centrally projecting from the grater and secured to the shaft by a cotter pin 30. Braces 31 connect the hub 29 with the grater 42.
The inner face of the grater 42 is provided with teeth 32 for acting upon the vegetables such as potatoes 33 positioned within the chambers 18A of said block 15. A wheel 34 is secured to the outer end of the shaft 40 at the forward end of the machine adjacent the wall 13 and has a handle 35 adapted for turning the wheel 34, shaft 40 and grater 42. It will be apparent that the revolving of the grater 42 causes the teeth 32 to act upon the vegetables 33 so that the gratings will fall within the chamber 36 at the forward end of the machine 0r within a receptacle not shown which may be readily placed therein through the door-way 14. The pistons 21 are adjusted by turn-ing the wheel 27 for forcing the vegetables 33 against the grater teeth 32 and it will be apparent that different kinds of vegetables may be simultaneously acted upon by the grater 42 when positioned within the different chambers 18 of the block 15.
The chambers 18 may be lled with vegetables and when any grated vegetables are desired, the wheel 34 may be turned for obtaining the desired amount. Upon removico ing the Cotter pin 30, the shaft ll0 may be Withdrawn from the opening` 37 in the Wall 13 through which the shalt extends, permitting the grater 42 to be removed. By turning the screw 22, the plate 19 may loe retracted sutlieiently for moving the pistons 21 from the chambers 18, permitting the chambers to be reilled with the vegetables 33.
Potatoes may be stored in the loin 38 beneath the plate 19 adjacent the opposite end of the machine from the chamber 3G.

A machine comprising a base7 side Walls upon said base, end Walls between said side Walls, a block secured between said side Walls having chambers therethrough longitudinally of the machine, a sha-ft ournaled through one end Wall of the machine and in the adjacent end of the block, a grater disk mounted upon said shaft spaced from the adjacent end of the block, removable connections between said disk and shaft, a screw journaled through the other end Wall and swiveled in the opposite side of the block, a
plate threaded upon said screw, a piston in each of said chambers, rods projecting from said plate secured to said pistons, and operating means for said shaft and screu outwardly of the opposite end Walls of the machine.
2. A grating machine comprising a base, upright end Walls upon said base, upright sides upon the hase connecting said end Walls with a door-Way in one of said sides adjacent the forward end of the machine; longitudinal ledges provided upon said side Walls, a block secured upon said ledges between the side Walls having bores therethrough adapted for receiving vegetables, a grater journaled adjacent one end of the block, a follower plate slidably mounted upon said ledges at the opposite side of the block, a piston Within each chamber attached to said plate and operating means for .sa-id plate journaled in the block and the adjacent end of the machine.
