Description
W. F. MILBRATH. VEGETABLE CUTTER. APPLICATION FILED JAN-23.1918.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.

WILLIAIVI F. MILBRATH, 01? AUSTIN, IICINNESOTA.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Application filed January 23, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAH FMILBRATH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Austin, in the county of Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters, of which the following is a sp cification.
T his invention relates to vegetable cutters and graters and particularly to a device adapted to grate or cut potatoes and other vegetables.
An object of this invention is to produce' a device of the character indicated which can be readily disassembled for cleaning or repair and in which the grater shaft may be removed fr m the vase or the scraper can be from the base expeditiously,
disconnected provision being made for reassembling the parts and for holding them in assembled relation.
ii/'ith the foregoing and other objects in view, the inventiton consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
in describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which I have shown the invention by a view in elevation, partly in section.
In this drawing 1 denotes clamp having a bearing 2 therein, the said clamp terminating in a base 3 with an inclined bottom at and a spout 5 for the discharge ofthe grated vegetables. Studs 6 project from the outer wall of the base near the top and these studs enter slots 7 in the hopper 8, the said hopper having a spout 9 by which or through which potatoes or the like are delivered to the hop aer.
The base 3 has an aperture 10 which extenos through a boss 11 rising from the base and constituting a bearing for the shaft 12,

Patented Oct. 22, 1918. Serial No. 213,334.
the said shaft having a grater or cutter disk 18 on its upper end and having its lower end angular in cross section to fit in a pinion let which is driven by the gear wheel 15 on a shaft 16, the said shaft being journaled in the bearing 2 and provided with a crank handle 17 by which it is rotated. The shaft 12 is removable, as stated, and is supported by a bracket 18 secured to the under side of the base by a fastening such as a screw 19. The lower surface of the base is preferably recessed as at 20 to receive the hub of the pinion l4.
Potatoes or vegetation are pressed into the cutter with a follower 21 studded with pointed teeth.
From an inspection of the drawing and from the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the clamp and the base can be cast or otherwise formed integral and that the construction therefore is comparativelyinexpensive since the hopper need only be fitted to the base and the other parts of the device assembled with relatiton to the clamp and base. The detachable nature of the parts permits access to all of the structure where foreign matter may accumulate and therefore the device can be kept sanitary without the exercise of undue care.
I claim in a vegetable cutter or grater, a base having an inclined upper surface terminating in a spout, said base having an'aperture for the shaft, a shaft rotatable in the aperture, a head on the said shaft, the base having a recess in its bottom constituting a seat, a pinion having a hub rotatable in the seat and mounted on the shaft, a bracket anchored to the base and having an extension underlyingthe shaft and pinion for holding the shaft and pinion connected together, and means for rotatino the pinion.
