Application filedMay'3, 1919. Serial Iva-294,398.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES 1V. McFar- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownwood, in the county of Brown and States of TeXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashboilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wash boilers.
The purpose of the invention is to produce a wash boiler cf the intermittent circulatory type involving certain unique features making for simplicity, efficiency and sanitation.
In carrying out the invention a receptacle such as an ordinary wash boiler is provided with a supporting member contiguous to its inner walls and on which a false bottom is removably fastened. The supporting member carries upstanding ejectors from which the water and steam escapes in jets. The central portion of the false bottom is foraminous and any suitable valve orflow interrupting means may be employed to control the passage of water and steam through the false bottom. I
One advantage is the easy cleansing of the boiler. The false bottom being removable permits the thorough cleaning of the boiler below the supporting member by giving easy access thereto. The ejectors may be easily cleaned as of course is the false bottom.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a boiler constructed in accordance with this invention, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view, the cover being removed.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates an ordinary wash boiler and 2 the cover thereof, but it is to be understood that the invention is not to be confined to a Wash boiler of particular shape as receptacles of various shapes may be used. An angleiron member 3 is fastened to the inner wall of the boiler in a suitable manner and is provided with a continuous packing seat or groove 4 contiguous to its inner edge so as to receive a gasket5 of suitable material.
A false bottom 6 overlapping the supporting member 3' has a marginal depending bead Teorresponding with'the seat 4'so as to force the gasket snuglyinto theseat'a'nd provide a steam-tight joint between the parts 3 and 6. It is obvious that the steam-tight joint couldbe otherwisemade. Bolts 8 are passed throughithe bottom 6 within its bead and also through member 3 at its marginal portion, the steam-tight joint thus surrounding the bolts.
The central portion of the false bottom is foraminous which may be affected by perforations 9. Some means must be provided for controlling the flow of fluids through the perforations and while various devices could be used I have found a disk valve 10 to be highly satisfactory. The valve has an area sufiicient to cover all of the perforations and is supported a short distance below the bottom 6 in a cage 11 of the usual construction.
In boilers of this type the valve is seated against the false bottom by the steam generated below said bottom. Upright columns or ejectors 12 have their lower ends threaded in openings in the member 8. These ejectors have perforations 14 directed toward the center of the boiler. The hot water and steam rising in the ejectors are ejected through the perforations with con-. siderable force. structures could be used for ejecting the water and steam. Caps 13 are secured on the upper ends of the ejectors and may be removed for cleaning the same, but other means of closure could be used.
It will be seen that by removing the bolts 8 the false bottom may be removed and the valve 10 easily cleaned. When the false bottom is removed the boiler under the memher 3 may be thoroughly cleansed. By removing the caps 13 the ejectors may be flushed or swabbed out. The whole device is highly sanitary and access may be had to all parts. 7 V V r In using the boiler the clothes or washing is placed in the boiler and the latter -is filled with water to a height to cover the false bottom 6. By supplying heat under the boiler the water is boiled. The water as it becomes hot rises in the ejectors and escapes through the perforations. When the Water reaches the boiling point steam will be generated and will exert sulficient pressure under the valve 10 to raise the same against the bottom 6 and seal .the
It is obvious that other 7 perforations 9 thus preventing water from passing down through the same. The hot water and steam will escape through the perforations 14 in jet with considerable force and spray upon the clothes. "The steam condenses and the water accumulates above the false bottom until its Weightovercomes the pressure of the steam, whereby the disk valve 10 is displaced downward. This action is sudden so that a forceful and sudden precipitation is had. This action will recess at frequent intervals thus setting up a circulation.
What I claim is:
In apparatus of the character described, a receptacle, an angular supporting member arranged within the receptacle and embodying a horizontal flange, said flange having a surrounding series of openings, upstanding tubes having their lower ends secured within the openings of the flange and having their upper ends closed, said tubes being provided upon their inner sides only with spaced superposed apertures, a false bottom to be supported by the supporting member and provided in its central portion with an opening, a disk valve arranged to cover and uncover the central opening in the false bottom, and means to effect a water tight detachable engagement between the false bottom and the flange of the supporting member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES W. MGFARLAND.
