MEANS FOR INKING PRINTING-FORMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed September 20, 1919. Serial No. 325,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENDRIK DE CLnRo a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Amsterdam, Netherlands, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Inking Printing-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to means for inking printing forms, it being understood that the term ink herein is intended to cover any coloring material that may be used for printing purposes and that the expression printing form also applles to types, printing blocks and the like.
The apparatus hitherto used for inking printing forms have the inconvenient feature of being rather complicated. In typewriters, addressographs, duplicators and other machines of this type, this inconvenience has been obviated by the provision of an ink ribbon. The known devices of this character, however, are not quite satisfactory owing to the fact that during the printing operation the ribbon is located between the form and the paper, which causes the ink to be pressed out of the ribbon, and the latter to be subjected to rapid wear and tear.
The chief object of my present invention is to provide simple means for evenly inking printing forms with the aid of an ink ribbon, in such a manner that during the printing operation the ribbon is not in contact with the form.
The figure in the accompanying drawing is a sectional view, partly in elevation of one practical embodiment of the present invention.
The mechanism shown in the figure comprises a member 11 adapted to rotate about a shaft 6. The said member 11 carries a piece 5 in the form of a cylinder segment for supporting-the ink ribbon 3, windable about the reels 1 and 2, in combination with a diametrically opposed segmental impression piece 12. The member 11 receives continuous rotary motion in the direction of the arrow shown and beneath the said member 11 is the form cylinder 10 of suitable diameter. During the rotation of member 11 the segments 5, 12 alternately roll on the form 10; if now the sheet 9 to be printed is fed into the machine the moment wherein the segment 12 begins to roll on the form, and removed as soon as the said segment disengages the form, the sheet 9 moves between the freshly inked form 10 and the impression segment. 12, thereby taking up the required quantity of ink.
It is to be noted that the ink ribbon receives intermittent lengthwise motion whereby even wear and tear is warranted; for this purpose any suitable mechanism may be employed.
As a matter of course my present invention may be embodied in inking mechanism comprising a plurality of ink ribbons.
What I claim as my invention is:
In inking mechanism of the character referred to, the combination with a printing form of an ink ribbon stretched over a cylindrical supporting member and adapted to intermittently move lengthwise over same, of a shaft on which the said supporting member is mounted, and. of a cylindrical impression member mounted on said shaft concentrically with said ribbon supporting member, both said members being adapted when rotating about the said shaft to alternately roll on the form.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENDRIK on CLERCQ.
