FLYCATCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratenteanec. 9, 1919.
Application led .August 25, 1919. Serial No. 3153,532.l Y
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroitin the countyof IVayne and State of lvi'ichigan, 'have invented new and useful Improvements in Flycatchers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to inse-ct traps, particularly to fly catchers, and has for its object the provision of an attachment adapted to be disposed upon the top of a garbage can and so constructed as to hold a sheet of sticky fly paper provided with perforations through which the odors from the garbage can may escape to attract the flies and through which the I'iies will endeavor to pass in order to gain access to the garbage, the flies being caught and held in this attempt.
An important object is the provision of an attachment of this character with which is associated a cover member designed for protecting the sticky fly paper against rain and also designed to prevent cats and other animals from gaining access to the garbage, this cover member being provided with a plurality of holes through which flies may enter and be caught, as above mentioned. l
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eiiicient in use and a general improvement in the art.
IVit-h the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a garbage can equipped with myv complete device,
F ig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the sticky fly paper in plan.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates a garbage can of ordinary construction and B designates my device as a whole.
In carrying out my invention I provide a cylindrical member open at its top and bottom and designated by the numeral 10. This cylindrical member as well as all the other parts of the device is formed of sheet metal, preferably galvanized iron and this cylmdrical member has its upper and lower edges .upon the disk vmember 11 is a sheet le of sticky fly paper which is provided throughout its area with a, plurality of small holes l5. When this sheet of fly paperV is disposed upon the disk member 11, the odors risingl from the garbage within the can will pass through the holes 15 and attract flies. some of which will alight upon the sticky fly paper and be caught thereby and others of which will attempt to pass through the holes 15 and be caught in such attempt. The portion of the device thus far described may be used by itself though I preferably make use of a cover member 'including a cylindrical portion 16 having a handle 17. Depending from the cylindrical portion 16 is a flange 18 which engages eXteriorly. upon the upper portion of the cylindrical member 10 and the shoulder formed at the juncture of the portion 16 withy the flange 18 engages upon the upper edge of the member 10 for holding this cover in proper position. The top of this cover 16 is closed but the outer periphery of the portion 16 is provided with a series of holes 19 through which flies may enter. From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple device which may be attached to a garbage can to serve as a cover therefor and which is provided with means whereby the flies attracted by the odors will be caught, the device being so constructed as to exclude yrain and to prevent the entrance of cats or other animals.
While Ihave shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit ofthe invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.'
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A garbage can attachment comprising a cylindrical member adapted for disposirolled.V Secured within the'member l0 is a y disk men'iber Vr1.1 which is vprovided at its tion upon the top of a garbage canand provided internally with a supporting member havingan opening therein, a sheet of sticky Hy paper disposed upon said support-ing; member and provided with a plurality of holes, and a cover member disposed upon said cylindricalmember to form a'closure therefor and provided inits periphery With a plurality of holes. y 4
2. In combination with argarbage ican, a fly catching rdevice .comprising ya 'cylindrical member adapted for disposition upon the top of a garbagevoan in externally encircling relation thereto, a disk member extending transversely of said cylindrical vmember intermediate the ends thereof and `provided with a Centralppening, and a sheet ofstioky iy paper supported upon said disk member and provided With a plurality offholes.
3. In combination with a garbage can, a iiy ycatching:device comprising a cylindrical member adapted for disposition upon the top of a, garbage can in externally encircling relation thereto, a disk member extending Ytransversely of said cylindrical member intermediate the ends thereof and provided with a central opening, and a sheet of sticky iiy paper supported upon said'disk member and provided with a plurality olf holes, and a cover member including a cylindrical body having a closed top Wall-andhaving formed upon its lower edge a iange of larger diameter than the body engagingiexteriorly upon the periphery of Said body portion being "provided With a plurality of holes.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature. 40
