ADJUSTABLE SOUND-BOX.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. CAPPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Sound- Boxes, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention relates to adjust-able sound boxes and more particularly to the provision of a mounting therefor whereby the sound box may be brought into different positions for reproducing different kinds of records, as, for example, it may be used in one position with records having vertical cut grooves and in a difi'erent position with records having laterally undulating grooves.
An object of the present invention is to provide such an adjustable sound box which may be adjusted to different positions without substantially changing the position of the stylus or needle upon the record and without substantial] Y ati'ecting the relation between the sound conveying tube, commonly known as the tone arm, and such stylus or needle. One mode of obtaining this result may consist in mounting the .reprm ducer so that it may be adjust-ably rotated to swivel upon an axis making an oblique angle with the rcproducer diaphragm. and arranging the reproducer stylus or 'needle holder on the opposite side of the diaphragm. with the axis of its stylus socket or bore making an oblique angle therewith. and said bore and the stylus or needle held therein extending in the same general direction as a prolongation of the axis of the swivel mounting.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for holding the sound box in its adjusted positions.
Other bjects'of the invention consist in the improvement of apparatus of the char acter described in various particulars, and with the foregoing and related objects-in View, my invention consists in the parts, improvements and combinations herein set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing 1 have illus trated one embodiment of my invention for the purpose of making the invention clearly understood, but I am not to be limited to the specific embodiment shown except as required by my claims, by which my Invention is defined.

Fig. 2 is a front view of the sound box shown in Fig. 1. Fig, 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, except that the sound box is turned in position for reproducing records having lateral grooves and equipped with av needle for such reprtnlnction. The reproducer may be of any construction. bodies a head 10 and a diaphragm 11 secured therein in any preferred manner, and an arm 12 connected to the diaphragm 11 and held by springs 13 to vibrate on knife edges 11 and comprising a stylus or needle holder 15 with means for securing the stylus or needle in place. as athumb-screw 16. A. socket or bore. 17 is provided for receiving the shank of the stylus or needle. Such bore 17. preferably makes an oblique angle with the plane of diapl agm 11. In Figs. 1 and 2 a reproducing stylus 18 adapted for vertical cut records is shown. whereas in Figs. 3 and 4 a needle 18' adapted for records having lateral cut grooves is illustrated.
The reproducer neck 19 has substantially the form of an elbow and is preferably detachably secured to the reprodncer head 10 asby screws 20 passing through a flange 21 provided on the neck 19, the arrangements of the parts being such that the axis of the bore of the neck 19 at the open end thereof farthest from the reproducer head 10 makes an oblique angle with the plane of diaphragm 11. The stylus 18, on the opposite side of diaphragm 11 likewise makes an oblique angle with the plane of said diaphragm and extends in the same general direction as the axis of neck 19, is received in a second elbow member 23 so as to turn therein, and provide a swivelin joint or coupling substantially closely adjacent to preferred which the from may be resorted to within the scope of my claims and without departin from my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a sound box, a' short neck having the form of an elbow rojecting substantially centrally out'of t e back thereof and having its open end extending at an acute anglqto the plane of the sound box diaphra In, a secondelbow member in rst-named elbow is rotatably mounted, the two elbows forming a sound eduction tube, and the sound box being provided on the opposite side of the diaphragm therefrom with a holder adapted to hold a reproducer int with the axis thereof extendin in t e same general direction as the axis 0 rotation of the first-named-elbow upon the second named elbow.
2. The combination of a sound-box, abollow neck projecting out of the back thereof and having its open end at an acute angle to the plane of the sound box diaphragm, a second elbow in which the first is rotatably mounted, such rotatable mounting being closely adjacent to the sound box body, and an arm on said reproducer comprising a reproducer point holder adapted to hold a reproducing point with the axis thereof extendin in the same general direction as the axis oi the open end of the reproducer neck.
3. The combination of a sound box, an elbow neck detachabl secured to the rear thereof, and a secon elbow in which the first elbow is screw-threaded, the sound box being in position to prevent the' rotation of one elbow with respect to the other except through a limited range without detaching the sound box from the elbow neck.
4. The combination of a tone-arm and a sound box having a diaphragm, said tonearm and sound box being provided with a swivelincr connection, the plane of the diainclined with respect to the impart vibration to the diaphragm, and means on said arm for holding a needle or stylus at an oblique angle to the plane of the diaphragm and with its trackin point extendin in the same general direction as the swiveling axis.
5. The combination of a tone-arm, asound box swiveled to turn thereon into two reproducing positions, said sound box being provided with a diaphragm arranged at an oblique angle to the swivel axis and with a stylus arm for imparting vibration to the diaphragm, and means on said arm for holding a reproducing needle or' stylus at an angle to the diaphragm and substantially parallel to the swivel axis.
6. The combination of a tone arm with the open end thereof directed downwardly and having an axis at-an oblique angle to the longitudinal-axis. of the tone arm, a sound box having a swiveling connection therewith, the swiveling axis coinciding with the axis of said open end, a diphragm in said sound box, and arranged with the plane thereof making an oblique angle to said swiveling axis, the longitudinal axis of the tone arm extended passing through said diaphra m, and a reproducing point holder adapts to hold a reproducing point at an oblique angle to the plane of said diaphragm, and means for connecting said holder to the diaphragm.
7. A tone arm, a sound box having a swiveling connection therewith with the swiveling axis at an oblique angle to the longitudi- .nal axis of the tone arm, a diaphragm in said sound box located opposite the end of the tone arm and extending substantially crosswise of the axis of the tone arm, and means for holding a stylus or needle at an oblique angle to the diaphragm carried by the sound box and having an operative connection-with said diaphragm.
8. A tone arm, a sound box having a swiveled connection with the tone arm and at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis thereof, a diaphragm in said sound box'at an oblique angle to the swiveling axis and a holder adapted to hold a stylus member at an angle oblique to the plane of said diaphragm, and means for operatively connecting said holder to said diaphragm.
9. The con'ibination of aphonograph tone arm, and a reproducer mounted for rotation thereon, said reproducer comprising a diaphragm arranged at an oblique angle to the axis of rotation, means for holding a reproducer stylus member at an oblique angle to said diaphragm, the trackin point of the reproducer stylus member eing substantially directly beneath the axis of the tone arm extended in all positions of the reproduccr.
