FRUIT-JAR OPENER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVINIFRED CLASEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Openers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fruit jar holders, and the like, and has for its object the provision of simple and efficient means for facilitating the closing and opening of screwcap fruit jars, and the like.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side View of a device embodying my invention, and
Figs. 2 and 3 are views taken on lines 2-2 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, I have indicated a base 5 which is in the form of aclamp arranged so that itmay be clamped on the edge of a table, not shown,
or any other suitable support where the device is likely to be used. In the clamp base 5 I provide a thumb screw 6 for locking the member 5 inoperative position ona. supporting object.
Above the base 5 I dispose a table 7, which in the present instance. is circular and knurled on its periphery so as to make it more easily rotated. Depended from the table 7 is a pivot pin or stem 8 which is journaled in a suitable vertical opening in the base 5. While I have indicated the pin 8 as being integral with the table 7 and journaled in the base 5, it will be understood that any different arrangement may be permitted which will provide means for rotatably mounting the table 7 on the base 5. Between the base 5 and table 7 I provide a resilient member, such as the spring 9, and between the upper end of the spring and the table 7, I preferably provide a washer 10 which may be connected with the top of the spring 9 and prevent rotation of the latter when the table 7 is turned, and therefore prevent the spring cutting into the materials at the top and bottom thereof.
At one side of the table I provide a lug 11 which may be formed integrally, or in. any other desirable manner. Attached to the lug 11 is a curved clamp 12. The clamp 12 may be attached to the lug 11 in any desirable manner, such as by rivets 13. On the Specification of Letters Patent; Patnted Dec. 9, 1919.

This material 1 1 maybe rubber, or any other desirable substance. The ends of the clamp .12 are connected by a bolt 15 and thumb nut 16. The ends of the clamp are preferably perforated for the reception of the bolt 15 and one end bent as at 17 to engage the head 18 of the bolt to prevent the latter turning whenthe nut 16 is rotated.
Extending upwardly and secured in the base 5 is a standard or post 19. The post 19 may be secured in the base 5 by being threaded therein, or in any other desirable manner.
' On the standard 19 I provide an arm 20 which hasa perforation therein sufficiently large to pass over the standard 19. In one side of the arm 20 I thread a screw 21 so thatthe latter may be adjusted to engage the standard 19 and hold the arm 20 against movement on the standard. Attached to-the arm 20 is a cap clamp 22. The cap clamp 22 is similar to the jar clamp 12, and is also provided with a rubber, or other frictionincreasing lining 14. The ends of the. clamp 22 are held together by-bolt 15 and nut 16 in a manner similar to the bolt already d scribed as being mounted in the clamp 12. The standard 19 is preferably nonround, and in the present instance it is indicated being round, with the exception of one side being flattened. By having the side flat tened, as at 23 in Fig. 3, it will'be apparent when the screw 21 is adjusted tightly against the fiat side of the standard 19, the clamp22 may easily be mounted in substantial axial alinement with the clamp 12 and table 7.
In use a fruit j ar, not shown. is placed on the table 7 with the nut 16 sufliciently loose on the bolt 15 to permit the to rest on said table 7 The clamp 12 is then clamped on the jar by adjusting the nut 16. After the jar has been filled and ready for capping, the cap is placed in position and started on the threads of the jar. The clamp 22 is then adjustedonto the cap of the jar, not shown, and the thumb nut in said clamp 22 adjusted to tighten the clamp on the cap. The screw 21 is then tightened to hold the arm 20 against movement on the stem 19. The operator then grasps the table 7 and rotates the latter, clamp 12 and the jar to screw the jar into the cap, the knurled pe riphery of the table facilitating the operators grasp on the table. Also, extending from the table are lugs 2a which pass along the sides of the clamp 12 and which the operator may also grasp to assist in turning the jar. The lugs 24 also prevent displacement of the clamp 12 from above the table 7.
In removing a cap from a jar, the jar is set on the table 7 and the clamp 12 adjusted the same as before mentioned. The clamp 22 is clamped on the cap of the jar and the screw 21 tightened against the standard 19 also as mentioned above. The operator then rotates the table 7 in a direction to unscrew the jar out of the cap. This unscrewing of the jar out of the cap will compress the spring 9, but the spring 9 is of sufficient length to accommodate necessary downward movement of the jar. After the cap has been loosened, the clamps are loosened and the jar removed.
It will be apparent that the bolts 15 may be arranged in lengths to suit difierent sizes of jars, or the nuts 16 may be moved along on the bolts 15 suihciently to cause the clamps 12 and 22 to clamp diiferent sizes of jars and caps.
I claim 1. A device of the kind described C0111- prising a base; a table swiveled on the base; a jar clamp attached to the table and disposed above the latter; and a cap clamp connected with the base and held against rotary movement.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a base; a table swiveledon the base; a clamp attached to the table and disposed above the latter; lugs on the table and engaging the sides of the clamp; and a cap clamp connected with the base and held against rotary movement.
A device of the kind described comprising a base; a table swiveled on the base; an upstanding lug on the table; a clamp attached to the lug and spaced above the table; a pair of lugs attached to the table at the sides of the clamp holding the latter against movements laterally from above said table; and a cap clamp connected with the base and held against rotary movement.

A device of the kind described comprising a base; a table above the base; a pivot pin between the base and table rotatably mounting the latter on the base; a jar clamp on the table; a standard on the base; and a cap clamp secured to the standard and positioned substantially axially above the jar clamp.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a base; a table above the base; a pivot pin'between the base and table rotatably mounting the latter on the base; a resilient member between the base and table supporting the latter on. the base; a jar clamp on the table; and a cap clamp connected with the base and held against rotary movement.
6. A device of the kind described comprising a base having a perforation therein; a table having an integral pivot pin journaled in said perforation; a spring between the base and table supporting the latter on said base; a jar clamp attached to the table and rotatable with the latter; and a cap clamp connected with the base and held against rotation.
7. A device of the kind described comprising a base; a table swiveled on the base; a jar clamp carried by the table; a standard non-round in cross-section on the base; a cap clamp having a supporting arm mounted on the standard; and means holding the cap clamp against movement on the standard.
8. A device of the kind described comprising a base having a perforation therein; a table above the base; a pivot pin depended from the table and journaled in said perforation; a spring between the base and table supporting the latter on said base; an upstanding lug on the base; a resilient clamp attached to said lug and spaced above said table; lugs on said table engaging the sides of said clamp; a standard non-round in crosssection attached to the base; an arm having a perforation therein engaging said standard; a screw threaded in said arm and engaging said standard holding the arm against movements on said standard; and a cap clamp attached to said arm above said first-mentioned clamp.
