Description

E. ANHEUSER.
BRUSH APPLICATION FILED APR. 1'2. 1919.
1,324,487. Patented Dee. 9,1919.
iiiil llliklslkl UNITED STATS PATENT onnron.
ERNST ANHEUSER, or RACINE, Wisconsin] BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.v ,1 Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed April 12, 1919. Serial No. 289,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST ANHEUsER', a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brushes, and has particular reference to brushes especially adapted for use in cleaning castings, meat blocks and the like.
In the type of brush now in general use, the bristles twist in their'base, and thus their efficiency is impaired in that the flat edges of the bristles are not in alinement. Hence, as a principal object, this invention contemplates the provision of a novel form of bristle and holder whereby the bristles will be securely retained in proper position.
A further object is to provide a brush of the type described which will be capable of use with any. convenient type of holder or handle.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as comewithin the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view thereof;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectionalview taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a top plan View of a portion of the brush plate or base with the cover thereof removed; and I Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 designates a plate forming the brush head and having formed in its upper face a series of parallel channels 6, the side walls of which serve to retain the enlargedheads 7 of the metallic bristles 8 from becoming out of line; the ends of the bristles'project through openings 9 registering with the channels 6.
The plate5-has projecting laterally therefrom ears or lugs 10 adapted to register with like ears 10 formed on the cover 11. The cover 11 is securely held in position by means of suitable fastenings passing through the ears 10 and 10 and openings 13 in the ends of the plate 5 and cover 11, and upstanding flanges 14.- formed on the ends of the plate 5 assist in positioning the cover on said plate. The cover has on its upper face two parallel ridges 15 forming a channel for the reception of a handle 16 or any other suitable device, the handle being held in position by a wing nut 17 engaging a stud 18 having one end secured in the cover 11.
The bristles 8 are each formed of a singlestrip of metal, preferably steel and oblong in cross section, by bending the same upon itself medially of its ends and spreading apart its portion adjacent its bend to form the enlarged head 7 As depicted in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the heads of the bristles fit in the channels of the plate 5 and are held from relative rotation by the walls of the channels. By this construction a cheap and effective method of securing the bristles in the brush head is obtained.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A device of the character described,
comprising a plate having a series of parallel channels formed in its upper face and a series of openings registering with said channels, removable means closing the channeled face of the plate and metallic bristles projecting through said openings and having their heads enlarged to. fit between the walls of said channels and thus prevent the bristles from being twisted out of position.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a plate having a series of parallel channels formed in its upper face and a series of openings registering with each channel, metallic bristles projecting through said openings, said bristles each being formed from a single strip of material in the condition of having been bent upon itself medially of its ends and its portion at its bend substantially enlarged to form a head, said bristle heads being disposed within the channels of the plate and engaged by, the
side walls ofthe channels to prevent the rotation of the bristles with respect to the the, channeled side of said plate and adapted toreceive a suitable handle.
4. A brush of the class described comprising a plate having a plurality of openings therein, sidewalls provided near the inner ends of said openlngs, bristles each formed from a single length of material bent medially of its ends to form airenlargement; said bristles being passed through the. openings with their enlargements disposed therein and confined between the side walls whereby the rotation of the bristles within the openings is prevented, and means securing the bristles against dislodgement fronr the openings,
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
' ERNST ANHEUSER.
