BAG-FASTENER.
racer-ss.
YApplication filed October 2, 1918.
called a lift plate.
The object of my invention is to provide a durable and economical fastener of this general type which can be made principally out of sheet inet-al nf'itho-ut detracting frein its strength or appearance. Another obj eet of my invention is to provide a novel hinge construction applicable to bag fasteners generally. A still further object is to provide a novel form of controlling spring for bolt-carrying plates and a novel means for holding the saine in position in bag fastener casings.
l attain `these a-nd'other objects of my iiivention in the device set forth in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bag fastener having my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2, a bottoni plan view;
Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken immediately to one side ofthe central line of the fastener.
Fig. 4, a transverse sectional view taken on line www in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5, a transverse sectional view taken through the axis of the hinge on line y-g/ in Fig. 3;
Figs. 6 and 7, detail views of the spring retaining plate, and
Fig. 8, a detail view of the spring.
The bag fastener comprises a casing 1 having a top face portion-or Wall 2, side walls 3, 3 `and end Walls 4, 4, The end walls 4, 4 are provided with projecting lugs 5, 5 which serve to clench the casing to the top plate of one of the bag frame members. One end of the casing is also provided with a pair of lugs 6, 6 which are bent inwardly against the inside 'wall of the casing and Specification of Letters Patent. l

serve as retaining lugs in a manner hereinafter described. The top face 2 of the easing is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 'i' and a transversely disposed opening 8. The top wall of the casing on each side of the opening S is struck up to forni knuckles 9, 9. Pivoted to the casing is a bolt-carrying plate 10 suitably secured to the .under side of which is the projecting bolt 11. The bolt-carrying plate 10, which is sometimes called the lift plate, rests on the top of the casing on one side of the opening 8 and is `provided at its inner extremity with a projecting tongue which is struck up to `form a knuckle 12 of a curvature coincident with that of the knuckles 9, 9 ou the casing. Projecting from the edge of the knuckle 12 is a pair of straps or lugs 13, 13 between which is an offset portion 14, The straps 13,
13 are curled around the pintle 15 to forni` journal bearings so that when the bolt-carrying plate 10 is shut down on top of the casing, as shown, the knuckle 12 is in alineinent with the knuckles 9, 9 on the Casing and thereby presents a flush joint. The pintle 15 is so positioned in the opening 8 that the metal forming the knuckle 12 and pintle straps 13, 13 can be thicker than theinetal forming the knuckles 9, 9 thereby enabling the liftplate 10 to be made out of heavier metal than that of the casing. The positioning of the pintle l5 is effected by means of the retaining plate 16. This retaining plate is forined out of a sheet metal blank having its body portion cut away to forni openings 17 and 18 between which are formed the outwardly projecting tongues 15, 15', which latter are preferably rolled into a cylindrical member 15 to forni the pintle. The retaining plate is also provided with a rivet hole 19 adjacent to the end of the aperture 17. Secured against the inside of the top `wall of t-he Casing is a spring 20 bent up out of a single piece of round wire to forni the eye portion 21, spaced side members 22, 22 and the tongue 23. This spring 20 is held within the casing by means of the retaining plate 16 which is riveted to the top wall 2 of the casing by means of a rivet 24 passing through the aperture 19 of the plate and eye portion 21 of the spring.- The spring having its eye portion 21 thus secured between the plate 16 and the top wall 2 of the casing, its spaced side lportions 22 pass throng'd the opening 17 in the retaining plate and its tongue portion slidably engages the offset member la ot the lever l0. The extremity oi the tongue is preferably of such a length that it may be passed through the opening 1.8 in the retaining plate and terminate in a pocket between the retaining plate and the top wall ol the casing. The tongue :23 in this manner has its intermediate portion hel-d close against the offset portion la and the extremity oit the tonguel is free to move within the `pocket formed between the retaining plate and casing so that the lever may be lifted or upset to withdraw the bolt 1l from the casing, the resiliency of the spring acting on the otl'set portion l-l to hold the lever in its opened and closed positions. l
To assemble the parts the tongue 23 oit the spring is passed through the openings 17 and 18 ot' the retaining plate around the under side of, the pintle. rlhe retaining plate and spring are then secured to the top wall of the casing by slipping the lett hand end oi the retaining plate behind the edges of the retaining lugs G, G and then riveting the opposite end of the spring and plate to the casing. The straps 13, 13 of the lever are then passed through the opening 8 on the left hand side of the pintle and rolled around the pintle, as shown, to torni bear ings. The lever lt) is in this manner hinged to the casing and the projecting bolt ll passes through the slot 7 in the casing which registers with the opening 17 in the retain.-V
ing plate and the opening formed between the spaced portions Q2, 22 ol: the spring. lt should be noticed that the pintle is positioned within the casing so that its extremities are housed within the side walls and the knuckle l2 'forms a flush joint with the knuckles 9, 9 and at the same time the pintle is rigidly attached to the casing by means of the retaining plate, which acts as its supporting plate, so that no spacing collars or washers are required in positioning the same to form the flush joint. lVliile this is a very desirable feature, yet it should not be understood that my fastener is limited to the style having projecting knuckles since the pintle may be suitably positioned in any desired location in relation tothe casing. Further, it is not necessary that the pintle should be cylindrical, as shown, since it may have any other cross section common to sheet metal pintlesf While the employment of a wire spring has its advantages, yet the well known form oit sheet metal spring comj mon to this style of bag fastener may be utilized if desired.
My invention is not limited to the exact construction of the device above described, but is susceptible to such modification as may fairly come within the scope ot the'appended claims.4
Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters T)Patent is:
1.A bag fastener comprisino a casing having' its top wall provided with an opening, a sheet metal plate having a pintle formed thereon leaving an aperture on each side of the pintle, the said platebeing secured within said easing so that the pintle disposed beneath said opening, a bolt-can rying plate journaled on said. pintle. and provided with an oliset lug which projects away from the under side of said pintle, and an elongated spring secured within said casing against said oil'set portion, the said spring being passed through the apertures in said sheet metal plate around the under side of said pintle and having one of its eX- tremities confined between said sheet metal plate and the top wall of the casing on one side of said opening and its opposite eX- tremity movably secured between said plate and the top wall of said casing on the opposite side of said opening.
A. bag astener comprising a casing having' its top wall provided with an opening, a sheet metal plate having a pintle lorined thereon leaving an aperture on each side of the pintle, the said plate being secured within said casing so that the pintle is disposed beneath said opening, a bolt-carrying plate journaled on said pintle and provided with an offset lng which projects away from the under side of said pintle and an elongated wire spring secured within said casing against said offset portion, the said spring being passed through the apertures in said sheet metal plate around the under side ol. said pintle and having its eX- tremities confined between said sheet metal plate and t-he top wall ot the easing.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of August, 1918.
