which is considerably heavier than the weight 16, and which weight is suilicient to not only move the gate to closed position, but also elevate the weight 16. The cable 20 is of course so wound about the sheave 17 that whe'nthe weight 23 is free to act the wheel 6 will be turned in the proper direction to close the gate.
It is apparent, however, that means must be provided for so controlling the gate closing weight 23 that such is without influence on the gate during the opening operation, and yet so that such weight 23 may begiven control when necessary to close the gate and reset the gate opening weight.
To secure this result, there is provided a clutch connection between the sheave 17 and wheel 6, and means for controlling this clutch connection in the operation of the gate-closing weight. The clutch comprises a series of pins 24, slidably mounted inthe sheave 17, and terminally formed as teeth tocooperate with teeth 25 on the face of The pins are connected to a collar 26, slidably mounted on the shaft 5,
and em herall rooved to receive an adjusting yoke 27, connected to a lever 28, piv otally supported in the housing. The free end of the lever extends through the top of the housing, and is connected to a cord 29,
led over guide pulleys 30, to a trip-plate 31,
pivotally supported in frame 22. The closing weight cable 20 passes through the tripplate 31, and is provided at an appropriate point with a stop 32, which engages and operates the trip-plate to move the lever 28 to free the clutch, under circumstances which will later appear. V
The gate is held in both open and closed positionsagainst the influence of any moving means, by what may be termed a gate latch 33, formed as a weight slidably mounted 1n an upright frame 34 constructed as 'a post extending into the ground on one side "of the gate and an additional post rising from the housing 4. The weight of the gate latch is provided with a roller 35 for engagement with the rod 11, when the gate is moving, to avoid undue friction. The gate proper is provided with a stop 36 at the rear end, behind which the latch is engaged to hold the gate in closed position, and the bar 11 terminates at the forwardend above a projecting shelf, forming agstop 37, in 'front' of which the latch a conduit 41 extending substantially in the plane of the gate from the housing 4 to the center of the roadway. 'At the forward end, the conduit 41 communicates with a conduit 42, extending longitudinally of the 'otally mounted in the enlarged portions of the conduit. The trip levers 43 are connected by cables 44 to the cable 38, sultable guide pulleys being employed, so that movementof either trip lever 43- will elevate the latch 33 from the stop 36 or 37, as the case may be to release thegate.

A guide block 47 is arranged in the depending portion45 of the conduit, with its ends inclining downwardlyand outwardly, as at 484 A resetting member 49 is inountedfor sliding movement on the block 47, and comprises a triplever 50, mounted on a base having spaced rollers 51 for travel on the upper surface of the block, and bearing arms 52 project-V ingin both directions from the base, and having single terminal supporting roller 53. The resettingmember 49 is connected to a resetting cable 54, which leads over guide pulleys 55 tothehousing, and is .there wound about the sheave 1'7, in. thechannel 19. This cable 54 isso wound about the sheave that when drawn upon, the cable 20 will be wound upon said sheave, to raise the weight 23. r r a 1 a As the parts are arranged in Fig. -l, the gate is closed, the opening weight 16 elevated, and the closing weight 23' lowered.
If an advancing vehicle engages one of the trip levers 43, as by the vehicleaxle, the
cables 44 and 38 are drawn;upo1i, a-nd the latch 33 raised to release the gate; The
weight 16, through the cable 13, operates the wheel 6, wliich is moved in the proper direction to cause the cable 8 to open :the gate. When the gate isopened, thelatch 33 engages the forward stop 37, and the gate is held open. The vehicle in movingthrough the gateway, engages the lever-5O of the resetting member,'andthrough cable 54, the
movement of the resetting member longitudinally of the block 47, will; wind the cable 20 on the sheave 17, thus raising the gate closing weight 23. The movement of the resetting member under the action of the vehicle continues until the rollers 51engage stops 56 on the 'endsof the bloclr in which position the then forwardly extending. arm 52 will ride down the inclined end of the block, to permit-the lever 50" to tilt,and so free itself from the vehicle engaging portion. The vehicle in continued travel engages the other trip. lever-I43, againraises the latch. and frees the gate to theinfluenc e of the weight 23, by which the gate isclosed. In this operative movement of the weight 23, the clutch pins Q- L'are in operative function, so that the wheel 6 is turned in the proper direction to close the gate, and the cable 13 drawn upon to raise the weight 16, The weight 23 thus closesthe gate and resets the opening weight. a
.As the cable of the gate closing weight.
reaches a predetermined position, that is with the weight in'practically its lowered position, the stop 32 engages and operates the'trip-plate 31, to thereby open the clutch as previously described. The parts are held thus to prevent interference with the subsequent gate opening operation, and the clutch will not again function until the resetting member 49 is operated to elevate the closing weight 23.
It will be understood that thegate can be opened or closed by a vehicle movingin either direction, and that the gate closing operation, even though the weight 23 is set as the vehicle moves through the gateway, will not take place until the latch is released by the-remote or final trip 43. The conduits 4:1 and 4,2 are preferably set in the ground, with their top sections flush or substantially flush with the groundsurface.
Having thus described the invention, what is clalmed as new, 1s
. 1. A gate, an opening weight, a closing weight, and a clutch controlled by the dos ing weight for'permitting the movement of the closing weight to restore the opening weight.
2. A gate, a closingweight, a restoring member connected to said weight, an opening weight, a gate operating wheel under the influence of the opening weight, and means whereby the closing weight is automatically connected to said wheel when said weight is in predetermined pos'iton.
3. A gate, an' operating wheel therefonan opening weight connected with said wheel,
a closing weight, vehicle operated means for raising the closing weight to effective position, and a clutch controlled by said closing weight for connecting the latter to said wheel.
4. A gate, opening and closing weights" therefor, the closing weight being heavier U than the opening weight and serving to raise the opening weight to effective position when closing the gate, and vehicle-operated means forraising the closing weight to effective position.
5. A gate, an operating wheel, cable connecting said wheel and gate for operation of the gate in either direction, a closing weight, a sheave connected to said closing weight, a clutch between said sheave and wheel, means for opening said clutch when the closing weight has operated to close the gate, and means for holding the clutch in' function during the gate closing movement of said closing weight. 7
