To all whom it may concern,-
Be it known that I, GERHARDT SIGVERT REHLING KAMPMANN, a subject of the Queen of The Netherlands, residing at Tegal, Java, Dutch East Indies, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Safety-Razor Blades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening safety razor blades (Gillette and the like) of the type whereby two sharpening rolls are rotated in the same direction while the blade is held between same in an inclined position in such manner that the rolls are caused to act on the two cutting edges of the blade. In order to sharpen the blade at both sides the blade can be turned in the known manner, either by hand or automatically, after which the direction of the rotation of the rolls should be reversed.
According to the present invention, there is provided a device of the character mentioned wherein improved means is employed for automatically turning the blade to insure of the moving of the blade away from the rolls preparatory to the moving of the rolls, so that it is practically impossible to cut the rolls during the sharpening operation.
This result is obtained by the use of planetary pinions for driving the rolls, said pinions acting on a central wheel whereby the blade may be turned by hand about the axis of its clamping device and after this being done the blade or an arm of the clamping device takes up the rolls these as a whole being rotated about the same axis at the same time rotating at a relatively high speed about their own axes.
It is obvious that the condition of friction of the various moving parts is material to the pressure exerted by the cutting edges of the blade on the rolls.
In the accompanying drawing the figures illustrate an embodiment, which is only meant as an example.

The axles of the sharpening rolls a are provided with pinions b, which engage as planetary wheels the wheel at, the latter being secured to the bottom plate 0 of the casing of the device.
The roll supporting frame, in which the axles of the rolls are journaled consists of the two plates 6 and s which are connected by four bolts h. The frame 6, s, h is at one end pivoted about the trunnion of the bladeholder g, and at the other end about a con centric ring f on the fixed front wall 1" of the casing.
The blade holder 9 consists of two parts, the part u made in one piece with the journal and the part 0 to which the hand crank z' is secured. The part to is channel formed and at one end provided with a collar 2?; an arm m is secured to the other end. Said arm is provided with a hub portion 9 in which the part 0 fits. The part 21 is prevented from being removed out from the casing by the collar t. On the other hand the part 0 may be drawn out of the casing readily. The part 0 is provided with two projections '0 adapted to fit into the usual openings of the razor blade and can be pushed into the apparatus through openings w in the front wall As soon as the part 0 is fitted into the hub part 9 of the arm and the overhanging portion 7) of the fixed crank hub fits around the axle portion a,

On turning the hand crank 2', the edges is and Z are pressed against the rolls, the
latter are pushed back and forced to revolve at a relatively high speed about their axes, at the same time the frame work c, s, h being forced to rotate within the casing. As soon as the blade is bent to a certain extent, the arm m comes intocontact with one of the projections n of the plate 6. On turning the crank in the opposite direction, the blade first comes into contact with the rolls at the opposite sides before the latter may begin to rotate.
The arm m serves to maintain the frame work and rolls in proper position with respect to the axle g and the blade and also prevents excessive bending of the blade.

Therefore the projections 12 are fixed to members n a of sheet metal (one of same being shown in Fig. 6), said members being mounted rotatably upon the blade axle.
