Specificationof Letters Patent;
Patented Dec. 9, 19519.
Application filed. December 18, 1918. Serial No. 267,301
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELVIN V. Hooker.-v BERY, a citizen of the United States, residin the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition- R-oof-Layer Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to laying composition roofing composed of alternate layers of tar impregnated paper and asphaltic pitch,
and consists in providing an apparatus by means of which .liquefied asphalt, tar or pitch can be applied to the surface to be covered, and a layer of paper or other fabric laid thereon and rolled down.
In carrying out my invention I construct a vehicle adapted to the liquefied tar from which a pipe leads to a distributing pipe provided with perforations from which the tar will drop on to the surface to be covered; and on the vehicle is secured a roll of suitable roofing material, such as tar saturated paper, the end of which passes under a weighted roller, the function of which is to press the paper down upon the layer of tar distributed by the distributer, so that as the vehicle is moved over the surface to be covered the tar and paper are properly spread thereon.
The features of my invention are set forth hereinafter, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings-in which Figure 1, is a side elevation ofmy roofing apparatus.
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same.
In these drawings A indicates the frame, and A A indicates the supporting wheels of my roofing apparatus.
The frame A is provided with cross-bars aa on which is placed a tank B in which I place a supply of liquid tar. From the bottom of the tank B a pipe B (see Fig. 1) leads to a horizontal distributing pipe I) which extends transversely across the apparatus adjacent to the surface to be covered. The pipe B is provided with a shutofi valve 7), which has a valve-stem b and a lever 12 for operating the valve. Adja- D D secured to the frame carry a container forfully cent to the rearside, ofthehorizontal dis tributing pipe 5 is 'a weighted roller C the axle of which is mounted in bars C C at each end of the roller, one end of each of said bars C C being pivoted to the rackets A, and the other ends of the bars 0 C are pivoted to a bifurcated lifting bar D, which is provided with a hook (1 so that when it is desired to elevate the roller C the hook 01 may be raised upward and hooked on the frame A as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1.
Mounted in suitable bearings on the frame A beside the tank B is a rod E upon which I place a roll of tar paper F; and the end f of the paper is passed around and under the roller G which presses it down upon the surface G to be covered. Taris permitted to flow to the perforated distributing pipe 6 and escape therefrom to the surface G, and as the vehicle is drawn forward lays a thin coating of tar thereon, and the paper f unrolls and is pressed down upon the tar by the roller C. When the end of the course is reached the valve In is closed, the roller C elevated, the paper out off, and the apparatus turned around ready for the next course.
Having thus described my invention and suitable means for embodying it, I do not desire to be limited to'the exact construction thereof herein shown and described, but what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, a vehicle, a liquid cement container thereon, means connected therewith to distribute a layer of'the cement upon a surface over whichsaid vehicle is drawn, a vertically movable roller in said apparatus adapted to press a continuous strip of material upon said layer of liquid cement, as the same is distributed, and means to manually raise and lower said roller, substantially as de scribed.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,
a vehicle, a tank thereon, a pipe projecting downwardly from said tank, a perforated transverse pipe connected to the lower end of said first mentioned pipe, a weighted vertically movable roller mounted in said apparatus behind said transverse means to manually raise and lower said roller, and meansio support a roll of roofing material on said .vehicle so that the free end thereof will pass over and under said verpipe,
. clement container,
ticall'y movable roller, forth. 7 V
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a vehicle adapted to bermoved-0ver, a1surfaee to be covered With roofing material;
a e t is ribute connected With'sai'd container, a Weighted roller behind said distributeiybrackets secured to saidlvehicle', bars pivoted to said brackets and: extending therefrom 2 past]. the ends of substantiallyflas Set I said-Teller adapted to receive the 1 journals a liquid of said roller, 'means pivoted to the free ends of said barsadapted to guide saidhars laterally and raise and lower them When A desired,-.-and-means to support a continuous sheet of roofing material 011 said vehicle so that the free end thereofmay pass-,rbetween said distributer and saidl'oller, and-between said rollerJan'dthe surface to he covered,
substantially as set forth.
