This invention relates to apparatus for use in laying strips of roofing or other material contained on rollers, and to the application of a liquid cement or a compound having ad- 6 llt-lL-ilVB properties to. the surface of the strip material which is to be applied to the roof, as well as to applying said liquid adhesive to the upper surface of the first named strip when laid upon the roof to, secure a second 1 strip thereto; and the obj cct of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the class and for the purpose specified comprising a frame with means for supporting and guiding a roll of strip material in said frame, said frame 1 having rollers or other anti-frictional devices, permitting the free movement of the frame over a surface in the application of the strip material from said roller thereto; a further object being to provide a container movably supported in said frame over said roll and bearing thereon, in which container the liquid adhesive or cement is supported and by means of which weight is applied to the roll of strip material in its application to the surface over which the apparatus passes, said container having an anti-frictional roller on its under surface adapted to bear upon said roll; a further object being to provide means for controlling the discharge of the liquid from said container in its applicationto one side surface of the strip material on said roll; a further object being to provide means for discharging said liquid onto the strip material after it has been laid upon said surface, a single manually operated means being employed to control both of said liquid discharges; a further object being to provide means for supporting another roll of strip material in connection with the frame of the apparatus so as to apply said strip onto the first named strip and the liquid coating applied thereto; a still further object being to provide splash shields for confiningthe application of the liquid onto saidstrip material; and with these and'otherobjects in View, the invention consists in an apparatus of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and which constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

the strip, unravelled from the r The valves 21 are normally held in closed position by gravity and are adapted to be raised into open position by levers 26 pivoted to the top of the container 13 as seen at 27, said levers being coupled with other levers 28 as seen at 29, the levers 28 being pivoted to the container as seen at 30 and cooperating with a bar 31 disposed beneath the heads 32 of other valve rods 33 passing through guides 34 in the top of the container and terminating at their lower ends in valves 35 controlling passages opening into a pipe 36, connected to a transversely disposed discharge pipe or nozzle 37 through which thefluid 17 may be discharged.
It will be noted on a consideration of Fig. l of the drawings that three valves 21- and their companion parts are employed, whereas two valves 35 and their companion parts are employed, and two sets of the levers 26-28 are arranged one adjacent each side portion of the container,-and the connected ends 29 of these levers have attached thereto cords or wires 38 which pass around pulleys 39 and are connected with a manually controlled operating rod 40 movable in keepers41 arranged on the top of the container 13. B pulling outwardly on the rod 40, the adja cent ends of the levers 26 and 28 will be moved downwardly,- thus raisingthe outer ends of said levers, and moving the valves 21 and 35 into open position to discharge the fluid 17 from the container. The valves 21 and 35 may be adjustable with respect to the apertures or passages which they control so 7 as to insure the seating of saidvalves to control the discharge of liquid from the tank.
It will be noted on a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawings, that the nozzle 19 extends throughout substantially the full width of the frame, and is slightly less in length than the length of the roll 12 of strip material, whereas the nozzle tube 37 is shorter. Arranged adjacent the'nozzle 19 is a liquid spreader in the form of a plate 42, hinged as seen at 43 and having a spring 44 for normally supporting the plate 42 in engagement with the roll 12, thusconfining the flui d discharged from the nozzle 19 to the strip material on said roll. A similar spreader 45 is pivoted to abracket46 attached to a reinforcing frame member 47 arranged adjacent the lower end of and coupling the side walls 5 and 6 of the frame. The spreader 45 serves to spread the fluid discharged from the nozzle tube 37 over the upper surface of 01112. Arranged upon the lower surface of the tank 13 centrally of the opposite sides thereof are anti-frictional rollers 53 which support the tank or container 13 upon the roll 12. It will thus be seen that the weight of this container and its contents is constantly resting upon the roll 12 so as to securely and firmly lay the strip material of said roll upon the surface over which the apparatus passes. The rods 7 preferably have tubes 7a rotatably mounted thereon to provide for the free and easy verticalmovement of the container 13 means of which said container may be raised in the frame in the application of placing a new'roll of strip material therein.

other means for discharging liquid material onto the upper face of the strip laid on said surface, and manually operated means for controlling the discharge of liquid from both of said discharging means. Y

An apparatus of the class described comprising aframe in which a roll of strip materialzis free to pass and to move toward said surface in the removal of the strip material therefrom, means for guiding said roll in its movement with respect to said frame, a liquid storage chamber in said frame, means for discharging a liquid therefromonto the outer surface of the strip material on said roll prior to laying the same on said surface,
other means for discharging liquid material onto the upper face of the strip laid on said controlling the discharge of liquid from both of said discharge means, and means for movably supporting a second roll of strip material in connection with said frame in such manner as to lay the strip of the second named roll upon said first named stripsimultaneously in the movement of said frame over said surface.

An apparatus of the class described comprising a frame in which a roll of strip material is free to pass and to move toward said surface inthe removal of the strip material therefrom, means for guiding said roll in its movement with respect to said frame, a liquid storage chamber in said frame, means for discharging a liquidtherefrom onto the outer surface of the strip material on said roll prior to laying the same on said surface, other means for discharging liquid material onto the upper face of the strip laid on said surface, manually operated means for controlling the discharge of liquid from both of said discharging means, means for movably supporting a second roll of strip material in connection with said frame in such manner as to lay the strip of the second named roll upon said first named strip simultaneously in the movement of said frame over said surface, said liquid storage chamber being movable vertically in the frame,,means for guiding said chamber in its movement and said chamber resting upon said first named roll of strip materialand being supported in the frame thereby.

An apparatus for laying strip material onto a predetermined surface, said strip material being contained on a roll, means for supporting said roll in the apparatus in such manner as to rest upon the surface over which the apparatus is moved in the operation of a laying said strip material, and means in said apparatus supported on said roll for apply- .ing Ipressure thereto to facilitate v'10. o Anap'paratus for laying strip material onto a predeterminedsurface, said strip mamanner as to rest upon the surface over which the apparatus is moved in the operation of laying said strip material, means in said apparatus supported on said roll for applying pressure thereto to facilitate the laying of 4 said strip on saidsurface,.and means for applying an adhesive substance to that .face of the strip arranged adjacent said surface to secure said strip thereto. An apparatus for laying strip material onto a predetermined surface, said strip material being contained on a roll, means for supporting said roll in the apparatus in-such manner as to rest upon the surface over which the apparatus is moved in the operation of laying said strip material, means in said apparatus supported on said roll for applying pressure thereto to facilitate the laying of said strip on said surface, means for applying an adhesive substance to that face of the strip arranged adjacent said surface to secure said strip'thereto, and other means for applying a suitable adhesive to the upper face of said strip after it has been applied to said surface. a t p v 12. An apparatus for laying strip material onto a predetermined surface, said strip material being contained on a roll, means for supporting said roll in the apparatus in such manner as to rest upon the surface over which the apparatus is moved in the operation of laying said strip material, means in said apparatus supported on said roll for applying pressure thereto'to facilitate the laying of said strip on said surface, means for applying an adhesive substance to that face of the strip arrangedadj acent said surface to secure said strip thereto, other means for applying a suitable adhesive to the upper face of said strip after it has been applied to said surface, and means for movably supporting another roll of strip material in connection withthe apparatus to be laid onto the first named strip in the progress of the apparatus over said surface.

An apparatus for laying strip material onto apredetermined surface, said strip material being contained on a roll, means for supporting said roll in the apparatus in such manner as to rest uponthe surface over which the apparatus is moved in the operation of laying said strip material, means in said apparatus supported on said roll for applying pressure thereto to facilitate the laying of said strip on said surface, means for applying an adhesive substance to that face of the strip arranged adjacent said surface to secure said strip thereto, other'means for applying a suitable adhesive to the upper face said strip after it has been applied to said surface, means for movably supporting another roll of strip material inconnection with I .the apparatus to be laid. onto the first named terial. being contained on a roll, means for supporting said roll in the apparatus insuch strip in the progress of the apparatus over and forming a container for the adhesive substance employed, and means involving anti-frictional devicesfor supporting said tank upon. said first named roll.

An apparatus for laying strip materlalonto'a predetermined surface, said strip material being contained on a roll, means for supporting said roll in the apparatus in such manner as to rest upon the surface over 'which'the apparatus is moved in the operation of laying said strip material, means in said apparatussupported on said roll for applying pressure thereto to facilitate the laying of said strip on said surface, means for applying an adhesive substance to that face of the strip arranged adjacent said surface to secure said strip'thereto, other means for applying a suitable adhesive to the upper face of said strip after it has been applied to said surface, means for movably supporting another roll of strip material'in connection with the apparatus to be laid onto the first named strip in the progress of the apparatus over saidsurface, a tank arranged in the apparatus and forming a container for the adhesive substance employed, means involving anti-frictional devices for supporting said tank upon said first named roll, and manually operated'means for controlling the discharge of said substance onto the strip material of said first named roll. i
15. An apparatus for laying strip material onto a predetermined surface, said strip material being contained on a roll,
which the apparatus'is moved in the operasa'id apparatus supported on said roll for applying pressure thereto to facilitate the laying of said strip on saidsurface, means for applying an adhesive substance to that face of the stripv arrangement adjacent said surface to secure said strip thereto, other means for applying a suitable adhesive to the upper face of said strip after it has been applied to said surface, means for movably supporting another roll of strip material in ing said tank upon said first named roll, man
ually operated means for controlling the discharge of said substance onto the strip material of said first named roll, and spreaders means for supporting said roll in the apparatus in such manner as to rest upon the surface over tion of laying said strip material, means in Elli arranged adjacent the discharges of said-adhesive substance.

In apparatus of the class described involving means for supporting a roll of strip material to support and guide said roll in its movement over a predetermined surface, a tank movably supported in said means and arranged above said roll, an elongated nozzle discharge in communication with said tank and arranged above and adjacent said roll to discharge a liquid contained in said tank onto the strip material of said roll prior to the removal of said material therefrom, and a manually operated valve controlling the communication between said tank and said nozzle discharge to regulate the discharge of liquid from said nozzle.

In apparatus of the class described involving means for supporting a roll of strip material to support and guide said roll in its movement over a predetermined surface, a tank movably supported in said means and arranged above said roll, an elongated nozzle discharge in communication with said tank and arranged above and adjacent said roll to discharge a liquid contained in said tank onto the strip material of said roll prior to the removal of said material therefrom, a manually operated valve controlling the communication between said tank and said nozzle discharge to regulate the discharge of liquid from said nozzle, and another nozzle discharge in communication with said tank and through which the liquid contents thereof is adapted to be passed onto the upper face of the strip removed from said roll, and another valve in operative engagement with said manually actuated means for controlling said last named nozzle discharge.
