Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed June 6, 1919. Serial a... 302,236.
To all whom. it may concern:
-Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. GREENE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in belts and particularly to apparel belts.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved form of apparel belt which'will' automatically expand and contract with the expansion and con traction of the body of the wearer.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved belt of this character wherein adj ustments can be obtained without the necessity of forming holes intermediate those already formed in the end of the belt; thus renderin the same belt capable of fitting large an small persons.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with'the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt made in accordance'with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the spring carrying portion of the belt, showing the manner inv which the springs are connected to the adjacent portions of the belt, and slightly enlarged.
Fig. 3 is a. horizontal sectional view taken on' the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 and 11 represent two'sections of the belt, the former having a buckle 12 on its outer end, while the latter has the usual openings 13 in its "outer end. Disposed on the outer face of the inner end of the section 10 is a metal plate 14 which secured to the section by the rivets 15'. The plate 14 is in the shape of a V, the ends of the arms of which are rolled into tubular form, as shown at 16 for the reception of a pin 17, a portion of the pin being exposed between the ends of the said arms. A sim- 'ilar plate 18 is similarly secured to the inner end of the section 11 and has the pin 19 through the tubular portions 20, the intermediate portion of said pin being exposed through the space between the ends of the arms of the plate. The rolled portions 16 and 20 are cut out in the centers thereof,
and engaged around the pins 17 and 19,
within these out out portions, are the ends of the coil spring 21. Engaged with the exposed portlons of the pins, between the arms of the plates, are the ends of the pair of coil springs 22. Thereare thus four springs disposed longitudinally between the inner' ends of the belt sections which will readily stretch when the belt is drawn around the body and the perforated end properly adjusted in the buckle. With this construction, the belt readily expands and contracts with the breathing of the wearer, as will be readily understood. Furthermore, by reason of the presence of the springs, a single belt will be capable of fitting a larger number of persons of difl'erent girth, thus obviating the manufacture of belts of as many different sizes as are now made.
What is claimed is:
An apparel belt including a pair of sections, a plate secured to each section at the inner end thereof and having their inner ends rolled into tubular form, a pin disposed through the rolled portions of each plate, said plates being V-shaped and havmg the ends of the arms thereof dlsposed at the inner ends of the sections, each of'the rolled portions of the plates being cut out, and coil springs extending between the sections and having their ends engaged. with the pins at points within said cut-outs and between the arms of the plates respectively.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
' WILLIAM M. GREENE.
' Witnesses:
T. N. DAVIDSON, ANNA WILLIAMS.
