To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Jonn G. Snnarmnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Disinfecting Garbage-Can Cover, of whlch the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to garbage cans and similar receptacles and has to deal more particularly with a disinfecting means arranged in the cover of the receptacle, whereby the latter can be kept in a sanltary condition.
The invention has for its general ob e cts to improve the construction and operation of devices of this character so as to be reliable and eflicient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive manufacture, and so designed as to be easily manipulated.
A more specific ob]ect of the ]1 1V8Ht ll0l1 is the provision of a liquid contamer moorporated in the cover of the can or receptacle, said container having valve-controlled means for permitting the liquid disinfectant to be sprayed into the garbage can by simply pressing on the central part of the cover, which is flexible like the bottom of a hand oiler, whereby the pressing on the flexible portion of the cover causes the valve to open, while at the same time pneumatic pressure is exerted in the container to fore or spray out the liquid disinfectant.
WVith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a garbage can with the invention applied to the cover thereof;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectionon the line 3-3, Fig. 1; and
. merely illustrative and that such Fig. 4 is a vertical section similar to Fig. 1, with the exception that the valve is open.
Referring 'to the drawing, 1 designates a garbage or other. receptacle which has a lid 2' which is preferably made of metal with a resilient central portion 3, the cover being arched and having a rim 4 which fits around the body 1 of the receptacle. On top of the cover is a handle 5 for convenience in applying or removing the cover. The cover embodies a receptacle, reservoir orcontainer 6 which is formed by a bottom plate 7 soldered or otherwise fastened to the under side of the cover, and on the bottom 7 is a spraying device 8 through which liquid disinfectant is sprayed into the body of the garbage can to keep the same sanitary. The spraying of the disinfectant is controlled by a ball or other valve 9 which is suspended from a lever 10 fulcrumed on a suporting bar 11, and the said lever is connected with a push rod 12, which is in turn engaged or connected with the flexible part 3 of the cover. The chamber 6 is supplied with liquid disinfectant through a normally closed filling opening. Normally the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to discharge liquid disinfectant into the garbage can it is merely necessary to press down on the flexible art 3 of the cover, so that it will be moved rom the dotted-line to the full line position, Fig. 4. This pushes downwardly on the rod 12, which in turn tilts the lever 10 so that the valve 9 is raised and liquid disinfectant is sprayed into the garbage can by the device 8. The spraying is assisted by the pressure in the chamber 6, when the flexible part 3 of the cover is depressed, the action being very much like the squirting out of oil from a haind oiler by pressing the bottom of the o1 er.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have de scribed the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is changes may be made when desired as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cover of the class described comprising a metal member having an arched, resilient portion,'a second member secured to the first member to form therewith an airtight, liquid-containing chamber on the under side of the cover at said resilient portion, so that a plenum Will be produced in said chamber by the depression of said portion, a spraying means carried by the second member,- a valve associated with the spraying means, a lever connectedwith the valve for raisingthe same to open position, and a connecting means between the lever and the resilient portion of the first-mentioned member for operating the lever by the depression of said portion for causing the liquid to be ejected from said spraying means under the pressure produced by the depression of said resilient portion.
2. A cover for garbage cans, formed with an air-tight chamber thereon at the under side adapted to contain a disinfectant said chamber being provided with a discharge for the disinfectant, said cover having a resilient portion at the top of said chamber and depressible to produce air compression Within said chamber, a valve controlling said' discharge and valve-operating means conecting said valve and said resilient portion so that the valve is positively operated by the depression of said diaphragm portion to permit discharge of the disinfectant under pressure.
