To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL PUSARESKI, a citizen of Russia, and resident of Lynn, county of Essex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Heel-Aflixing Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,
like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention is" directed to a machine for affixing heels to shoes and particularly to a mechanism for securing heels to shoes by means of screws or like attaching means, as commonly practised in securing high heels of wood or the like to ladies shoes. A principal object of the invention is to provide means operative rapidly and effectively in a semiautomatic manner to position accurately and hold secure the shoe sole and upper with respect to the heel while the screws are forced into place, and in conjunction therewith to provide means operatlve rapidly and reliably to drive the several screws home simultaneously. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.

apart parallel guide ways 11, 11 formed with inturned flanges 11 to hold for sliding movement two blocks 12, 13 which fit together and have formed in their meeting sides cooperative portions of a heel seat 11. The guide ways 11 are shown as held to the platform 10 by clamp bolts 15 which are passed through elongated slots 16 in lateral projections 17 at the ends of said guide ways, this adjustment permitting said guide ways to be shifted laterally and adjusted accurately to position the heel socket blocks 12, 13 correctly,'with respect to the operative devices to be described. A stop plate 18 with an upturned front edge 18 is adustably clamped to the base to limit the forward movement of the block 12 by means of a clamp bolt 19 which is passed througlr a pin 23 engaging in a slot 24 of a lever arm 25which is fixed to a shaft 26 horizontally j ournaled in the frame. This shaft has fixed at its outer end an operating handle lever 27 so that by' shifting this lever the block 13 may be moved outwardly to first separate it from the block 12 and open the socket 14: for the reception of the heel, and thereafter move with it the block 12 to some little extent untilthe lever 27 comes against a fixedstop 27 a suitably positioned on the machine frame. .At one side of the machine frame 10 is adjustably fixed an upright column 28, the lower portion of this column having dovetailed sliding engagement with the frame as indicated at 28 and this column may be adjustably clamped to the frame in positionto locate the operating devices to be described correctly with reference to the heel seat just described, by means of clamping bolts 29 which extend through a vertically elongated slot 30 of the frame and through said column. The column 28 has a lateral bearing extension 31 extending out over the platform 10* at some distance thereabove with an upward extension 32extending up in parallelism with the upper end of the column 28 proper. The lateral extension 31 has slidably guided therein a vertical rod 33 the lower end of which has pin and slot connection 34 with a lever 35 fulcrumed to the frame at 36 and having link 37 pivoted to its outer end which may extend down to a treadle (not shown). The rod 33 has fittedthereon a compression coil spring 38 which presses upward against a collar 39 fixed on said rod, the lower end of said spring reacting against the column extension 31, thus tending to keep the rod 33 and parts associated therewith elevated, The upper end of the rod33 has fixed thereto a stout plate 40 which has fixed thereto spaced apart depending presser bars 41, 41. These bars extend down to a point relatively near the platform 10 where their lower extremities are inturned toward each other as seen at 41 and have fixed at the ends thereof a presser head and templet 42. The purpose of the inturned bar extremities 41 is to oermit them to extend down inside of the eel end of the shoe and the presser head and within the heel cavity of the shoe. the action of the spring 38 the presser head 42 is normally held elevated some little distance above its operative position to which it is adapted to be depressed by operation of the treadle connection 37. The top portions of the column proper 28 and of the vertical extension 32 are equipped with vertical guide ways 43 in which is slidabl fitted a frame 44 having horizontally ournaled therein a shaft 45. The shaft 45 has fixed thereon a spur pinion 46 which meshes with a rack 47 fixed to the extension 32 so that as said shaft 45 is turned the frame v44 will be raised or lowered according to the direc tion of such turning movement. The shaft 45 is equipped with a hand wheel or handle 48 and it also has fixed at its inner end a bevel pinion 49 which meshes with a bevel gear 50 suitably journaled in the frame 44 having forthis purpose at its top a short stud extension 51 which fits into a socket in a top portion of the-frame and having at its bottom a shallow seat in which fits a circular boss 52 extending up from the frame. The gear 50 is made hollow with aninternal gear 53 formed therein which meshes with a serles. of pinions 54, shown as three in numher and fixed at the tops of a series of screw driver shafts 55. The pinions 54 are relatively thin or narrow faced as compared with the width of the face of the internal gear 53 so that said pinions will remain in Vmesh with said gear throughout a short range of sliding movement with respect thereto. The shafts 55 have fixed thereon bearing sleeves 56 which are slidably fitted through the extension 31 as seen at 57 and compression coil springs 58 are fitted on the shafts to press against-the tops 10f these bushing sleeves with the other ends thereof ting nto threaded sockets of said shafts.
The shafts 55 with: the screw driver. heads thereon are mounted in the slide frame'44 and guided in the fixed extension 31 in soaced apart relation as required toen'gage the three screws which are usually driven through the heel seat of the shoe into the heel to secure the parts together. 5 The presser head 42 is formed with templet holes 60 spaced a art according to the required spacing of t e screws, these holes being of a size to permit the screws s to slip therethrough and the operative end of the screw drivers to enter therein.
In use the presser head 42 being normall held elevated by the spring 38, the shoe r is applied thereto with the resser head fitting into the heel portion; hen the heel H is put into the then open sQcket14, the blocks 12, 13, being then moved rearwardl r and spaced apart. Thereupon the treadle 1s operated and the presser headv brings the v heel seat of the shoe down against the heel H, which it will be understood is at this time mostly thereunder, though a little to the rear of its final position, Then the handle 27 is operated topress the blocks 13, 12 forward and together, resulting'in sliding and pressing the heel H forward closely against the small ledgeor lip L which is provided therefor in usual practice, the shoe being at this time securely held against dis placement by the presser head 42. Then while the treadle is still held depressed to keep. the heel seat of the shoe firmly clamped to the heel, the hand wheel 48 is operated moving the slide frame 44 downwardby the rack and pinion connection 46, 47 and at the same time through the described connections rotating the screwdriver shafts 55. portance in allowing for irregularities in the forward drive of the'screws as compared Wlth the downwardpositive feed 'of the 1 30 slide frame 44 and thereby it is insured that the screws will always be driven in with a proper forward rotary movement without mutilating the thread hold in the wood. With the described mechanism the rapid and accurate positioning and assemblage of the shoes with the heel is attained and the securing elements may be applied simultaneously and much more rapidly than as at present practised. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I'there V fore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference bemg had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
' 1. Heel-affixing apparatus, comprising a presser head mounted for up and dowir movement and adapted to fit into the heel of a shoe, means for positioning a heel under said presser head and somewhat to the rear of its normal position with respect to a shoe applied to said head, and means for clamping the heel and moving it forward to operative position directly underneath the heel seat of a shoe on said presser head.
' 2. Heel afiixing apparatus, comprising a presser head mounted for up and down movement and adapted to fit into the heel of a shoe, means for positioning a heel under said presser head and somewhat to the rear of its normal position with respect to a shoe applied to said head, means for clamping the heel and moving it forward to opera tive position directly underneath the heel seat of a shoe on said presser head, and
, means for driving screws through the heel portion of the shoe into said heel while thus assembled.
3. Heel affixing apparatus, comprising a presser head templet mounted for up and down movement, and adapted to fit within the heel of a shoe, a heel socket mounted for movement laterally of said presser head and underneath the same and constructed also for opening and closing movement by said lateral movement, and screw driving means operatively combined with said templet presser head to drive screws therethrough for securing the heel portion of the-shoe to the heel, said presser head templet constructed, and cooperatively arranged to locate the shoe with respect to the heel in the templet presser head mounted for vertical movement and adapted to fit within the heel portion of a shoe, heel holding means mounted for movement to locate a heel in operative position with respect to a shoe fitted on said presser head, and means operatively combined with said templet presser head for simultaneously driving home a plurality of screws therethrough to secure the heel to the shoe, said presser head templet constructed, and cooperatively arranged to locate the shoe with respect to the heel in the heel securing operationand also to hold the screw driver means in correctly alined relation.
5. Apparatus of the kind described, comprising a presser head adapted to fit within 'means for moving the same vertically, a
heel carrier formed of two relatively movable parts with a heel receiving socket opening to receive the heel and closing as said carrier moves to operative position, and a multiple screw driver mechanism o erative through said templet presser head as it clamps the shoe on to the heel for driving screws therethrough into the heel.
