MIXING-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. EMnnsoN and CHARLES E. Buyssn, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of l Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lVIixing-Valves', and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the same, such as will enable others skilled provide a valve of an improved construction for mixing gas and air to form a combustible mixture.

a is the casing. This is provided with a gas inlet passage 5 and an air passage 0.
This latter is connectedby a pipe 2 (Fig. 4) to the source of air pressure illustrated as a blower a. d is the delivery passage. This is connected With thepipe a: by which the mixture of gas and air is conveyed to the point of combustion.
The casing a is provided with a cylindrical bore in which fits and rotates and slides axially a plug 6. There is a port a opening through the wall of the casing e and into the gas passage 6. There is a port a opening through the wall of the casing a opposite the port a and communicating with the air passage 0. The passage through the casing a is contracted at d to form a choke, or venturi, portion.
The plug 6 is provided with two upwardly extending guide pieces 6 e'. a is an annular shoulder formed at the upper end of the vertical bore of the casing a and on this shoulder fits a closing disk 7' is a retaining ring which is secured to the upper end of the casing a and holds the disk 7 in place.

By turning the nut g the position of the plug 6 may be adjusted axially in the bore of the casing a. f is a handle by which the disk f may be rotated carrying with it the plug 0.
The plug 0 is hollow and through its wall 1 are formed ports 6 e adapted, respectively,
increase its area of opening with reference to the corresponding port in the casing 64 and the other will decrease its opening with its corresponding port.
c is a conduit formed integral with the plug 6 communicating with the port 6 at one end, extending inward and downward coaxially with the plug 6, and opening at the lower end at or just beyond the venturi contraction (Z of the bore of the casing a. c is a reducing plug in the end of the conduit (2 which may be used when it is desired to increase the velocity of the jet.
The operation of the above described de vice is as follows:
By manipulating the nut g, the axial position of the plug 0 in the bore of the casing a is adjusted so that the registering areas of the ports e a and a c are adjusted to get the proper proportion of gas and air. Inasmuch as one area increases and the other clecreases when the plug 6 is moved axially in the casing a, this proportion may be easily adjusted. The plug 6 is then rotated by means of the handle f to give the desired quantity of air and gas mixture, the rotation of the plug 6 varying the quantities of gas and air in the same proportion.
The air being forced through the conduit e acts to suck the gas from the pipe 6.
What we claim is:
1. The combination of a valve casing having a lateral opening in its wall communicating with a source of fuel gas, and a lateral opening through its wall communicating with a source of air supply, a plug adapted to rotate and slide axially in said casing, said plug having two passages adapted to dellver V currents of gas in the same direction, a lat- 'means for reciprocating and rotating said plug, the lateral openings in said plug being so arranged with reference to the apertures through the wall of said casing that the reg istering area of one of said openings to the corresponding aperture in the casing shall increase and the registering area of the other opening and aperture shall diminish When the plug is adjusted axially in said casin 2. The combination of a valve casing having a lateral opening in. its Wall communicating with a source of fuel gas, and'a lateral opening through its wall communicating with a source of air supply, a plug adapted to rotate and slide axially in said casing, said plug having two passages adapted to deliver currents of gas in the same direction, a lateral opening in said plug communicating with one of said delivery passages and adapted to register with one of the apertures in the wall of said casing, a lateral opening in said plug communicating with the other of said delivery passages and adapted to register with the other of said apertures through the wall of the valve casing, and means for reciprocating and rotating said plug, the lateral openings in said plug being so arranged with reference to the apertures through the wall of said casing that the registering area of one of said openings to the corresponding aperture in the casing shall increase and the registering area of the other opening and aperture shall diminish-when the plug is adjusted axially in said casing, and means for forcing air toward the casingin the air supply passage, said delivery passages being so arranged that the discharge of air from one of said passages shall decrease the pressure at the discharge end of the other of said passages.
A mixing valve comprising a valve casing having a valve chamber provided with an air and a gas port and with an outlet through which the air and gas mixture is adapted to be drawn, a valve in the casing having ports adapted to register respectively with the air and gas portsin the casing to communicate the latter ports with the outlet opening, said ports being so arranged that by adjustment of the valve the efiective area of both the air and gas ports may be correspondingly increased or diminished and also the effective area of the air port maybe increased and of thegas port diminished, and vice versa, means for adjusting the valve to correspondingly adjust both air and gas ports, and means for inversely adjusting said ports. r
4:. A mixing valve comprising a casing having a cylindrical valve chamber provided with a plurality of intake ports and an outlet, a cylindrical valve adapted to be oscillated and adjusted longitudinally in the valve chamber, the valve having a plurality of ports adapted to register with said intake ports to communicate the samewith the outlet in the casing, the ports being so arranged that upon oscillating the valve the effective areas of the several registering ports may be correspondingly varied and upon adjustment of the valve longitudinally the efiective area of one of the ports will be increased and the other vdiminished, and viceversa, and means for oscillating the valve andad-' justing it longitudinally.
