ticularly to a device of vthis general characl ter especially designed and adapted fory use.
in connection with a sewmgmachineand it l is the object of the invention to Aprovideva novel and improvedvguard adapted sub'- stantially to incase the band wheelof'a sew. l ing machine' Wherebyf'entanglement-of the'.V
clothing of the operator or the work .with the wheel is avoided andwhich also prevents such `other contact vwith the hand wheel:
which would result in injuryf It is also an object of the inventiontoprorvidel-'a novel andlimproved guard of this character `which substantially` entirely fine closes'the band wheel AVand wherein said. guard comprises relatively movable sec-` tions topermit access being had tothe band wheel orthe band passing therearoundwith#Y- out the necessity of entirely removing the guard.
t Theinvention consists in the details Aof construction and in the combination. and arrangement of the several parts ofmy improved guard whereby certain important advantagesV are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and other# wise more convenient and advantageousfor use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. v
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that Amy invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Y
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a guard constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of a structure as illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of my guard detached, and. reverse to that shown in Fig. 2; and y ence being had to theaccompanying draw` Fig.V 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the guard as illustratedv in Fig. 3.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings T denotes the table of a sewing machine structure supported at its opposite ends by the side members S and coacting with the side members S in a conventional manner is n the frame F disposed longitudinally with the table T. One end portion of the frame F includes the oppositely directed and verti cally disposedy arms 1 `arranged on aprede termined outward curvature, and the outer` end portions *of said! arms 1 are: connected fbythe .verticallydisposed arms 2. Rotatably supportedV bythe armsQ and the'upper end portionof. the loweriarm 1 is the band wheel crank 3 `for rotating Vvthe'l band wheel B;
Operatively]engagedw'with .the band' .wheelcrankf Vis a pitmanuf coacting in awell i known manner :with the treadleA suitablyvr l mounted -upony thevzlower portion' of the frame f Gn denotes: my improved guard, as hereinfv disclosed,.,in itsentirety and said guard con1-` prisesrtwov4 hingedly f connected sections X` and Y, the ,sectionyX r being` arranged rearwardly of the frame F andthe section Y forwardly thereof. Each of the sections X andQYrisformed of reticulated fabric of desired mesh with the strands thereof being preferably of wire so that said section mayv be readily flexed orbent into desired form. It is also preferredthat the marginal portions 4of each ofithe sections X and Y have secured thereto a binding 5 preferablyV pro,
duced from sheet metal.
The ad]acent 'marginal portions of the sections'X and Y are Astraight and each;
ofsaidanarginal portions is secured to an` elongated amember L or `strip 7, of-wood` or other relatively` light; material; The mem bers or strips 7 are hingedly connected as at 6 so that said sections X and Y may be moved one relative to the other and which is of particular importance when the guard Gr is in applied position as one of said sections may be swung independently of the other into a position to permit access to the band wheel B and its concomitant parts without the necessity of entirely removing the guard G from its working position.
The rear section X has its upper and lower ends arranged in the form of a V with the apices outwardly directed and the outer side margin of said section between the ends substantially straight as indicated at 8 and the opposite end portions thereof are adapted to be secured, as indicated at 9, by wire or the like to the lower portions of the arms l. The section X is iexed or bent transversely into substantially a semicircular form in cross section and the apex portion of the upper end of the section X is suitably anchored as at 10 to the under surface of the table T at a point rearwardly of but in close proximity to the rear opening 11 in the table T through which the band BY passes. The inner marginal portion of the section X is secured adjacent its opposite ends, as indicated at l2 tothe upper and lower portions of the arm 2, although, if preferred, the member or strip 7 may be suitably anchored to the arm 2Y to the same advantage.
The front section Y of the guard G is bent or flexed transversely into such a form as to extend around a forward portion of the band wheel B and the dress guard Dk coacting therewith. The upper end portion of the section Yis provided with an extensionl 14 with its top marginal portion arranged on an upward incline toward the outer or free vertical margin of the section Y. The apex portion of the extension 14 is detachably connected, as at l5, by a hook member or the like with the under face of the table` T while the lower portion of the outer or free vertical marginal portion of the section Y is similarly connected as at 16 with the lower portion of the dress guard D. By releasing the connections at l5 and 16 the forward section Y may be swung readily into a position to aord access to the band wheel B or the band BV as the occasions of practicemay require and particularly when it is desired to throw the band B onto or off of the band wheel B.
The V formation at the lower end of the section X avoids any obstruction of hindrance being ofered to the requisite operation of the treadle A and its coacting pitman Pand also provides an arrangement Wherebyfthe lower portion of the section X closely approaches the Hoor or other supporting surface which results in a material advantage in the use of the guard G.
fit may beassembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I donot wish to be understood as limiting myself tothe precise arrangement and formation of the. several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: 1 g
l. A guard for a band wheel of a sewing machine comprising two hingedly connected sections, said guard being adapted to be supported by the table and frame of a sewing machine structure, thel Lipper end portion of one of the sections being in V formation with the apex thereof outwardlyA directed, said apex portion being adaptedv to be'securedto the table of the sewing machine structure.
2. A guard for a band wheel Aofa sewing machine comprising two hingedly connected sections, said guard being adapted to Vbe supported by the'tableand frame of 3. A guard for a band wheel of a sewing '80 a sewing machine structure7 the opposite l machine comprising two hingedly `connected sections, said guard being adapted to be supported by the table and'frame of a sewing machine. structure, the opposite end portions of one of the sections being in V formation with the apices thereof outwardly directed, the upper apex portion being adapted to be secured to the table ofv a sewing machine structure. i
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
