METALLIC RECEIP'IA CLE AND CHIME THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2 1919.
Anplieation filed May 29, 1919. Serial No'. 360,497.
ment with the body of the receptacle as to form a fluid tight joint and, wherein the chime Will serve as a reinforcing element to lend strength and rigidity to the receptacle, as a whole.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be setforth in the detailed descriptions which now follows. In the accompanying drawings Figure l, is an edge elevation of a chime illustrating its condition before application to the receptacle;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough; Fig. 3 is a view showing the chime in elevation and'the body of the receptacle in section after the chime has been applied to the receptacle; and Fig. 4: is a fragmentary face view of the chime.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawin g.
In carrying out the invention an annulus of L shape in cross section is first formed. One of the flanges or legs 5 of this annulus is adapted to fit snugly within a metallic receptacle, the walls of which are indicated at 6. The other leg 7 of the annulus is of Sufficient length to project beyondthe Walls 6, and the projecting part is provided with a swell 8 upon its lower or inner face. That part of the leg 7 is then bent'over upon the wall 6 of the receptacle to force the swell face of said wall and is rolled or otherwise forced into such tight engagement therewith as to constitute a fluid tight joint between the chime and the body of the receptacle and to firmly unite these two parts.
The necessary concavity 8 to receive the swell 8 is performed in the otherwise straight side wall 6, so that when the swell 8 is forced thereinto the parts are firml united, despite the fact that the wall 6 isunerlmped and comprises only a single thickness of metal.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction setforth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claim.
Having described the invention. what is claimed 1sv I.
In a device of the character described the combination with a metallic body portion consisting of a single thickness of metal, of a chime comprising an angular flange adapted to fit snugly down inside of said receptacle and a second flange integral therewith adapted to be bent inwardly over said body portion, the last namedfiange having a convex swell upon its inner face and the wall of the body portion being provided with a concave recess for the reception of said swell, as and for the purposes set forth.
