1 Specification of Letters Patent.
; Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed April 11, 1919. Serial No. 289,202
1 '0 all whom it may concern lle it known that I, LEO J. ALIG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fenceposts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a fence post which can be quickly and easily arranged in position for use, and the fence fabric secured thereto without the use of staples or analogous fastening elements.
An important object of the invention resides in the provision of a post including a fixed member and apivoted member, be tween which parts the fence fabric is clamped, the pivot of said movable member being arranged to move in an arcuate shaped slot so as to bring thepivot and movable member closer to the fixed member, thereby more effectivelyclamping the fabric should the same become loose upon the post.
In carrying out my invention I construct the post of a number of detachably connected sections, which can be compactly arranged when not in use, and quickly assembled or disassembled as the occasion may require.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of partsas claimed. 7
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the post showing the parts in position in use.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the pivoted member spaced from the fixed member.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the connection between the post and its spaced member.
Fig. 5 is a view showing a post and spaced member separated.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lower end of the post proper with the pivoted member removed therefrom.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view of a portion of the fence post, showing the formation of the slot for clamping the wire to the fence post.
The fence post constructed in accordance with myinvention essentially. consists of two parts, the base A and the post proper indicated at B. ;These parts are separable and may be connected in any suitable manr amen.
LEO .1. Arm, or srnrnerrnnn, OHIO.
ner; as shown in this particular instance the base element A is provided with a threaded socket opening at the upper end of said element, asv at 10, to receive thethreaded stem 11 depending from the lower end of thepost B. The element A is further provided with a small duct or passage 12 which communicates with the socket 10 to permit water and. small particles to pass from the socket when the element A has been set.-
The stem 13 of the element A is provided with a spiral blade '14 so that the element can be readily screwed into the ground thus saving the labor of digging post holes, and
when once positioned in the ground prevents the element A from being pulled out.
The post proper embodies a channel shaped bottom 21. from which. rises a relatively fixed member 22. The member 22 is of V-shaped cross sectional contour and adapted to partly receive the movable meniber 23 which has its lower end pivoted between the parallel walls 24 of the bottom 21. Corresponding edges of the member 22 is formed with teeth which cooperate with the notches 25 on the member 23 to effectively glamp the fence fabric between said memers. carried by the member 22 and adapted to pass through an opening 27 in the member 23 so that when the nut 28 is tightened upon the bolt, the members 22 and 23 will be maintained in clamping relation. It will be noted that the teeth 29 on the upper part of the member 22 extend in an upward direction in order to withstand the weight of the fence fabric, while the teeth 30 extend in the opposite direction to prevent the fence from being raised. It might here be stated that the member 22 is provided with the slots 31 to accommodate barbed wire when a low fence is constructed The parallel walls 24 of the bottom 21 are provided with alined arcuate. shaped slots 32 each of which is formed at its ends to provide a bearing for the pivot 33 of the movable member 23. When the fence is A threaded bolt or the like 26 is" initially constructed, the pivot of the movable member 23 is arranged in the bearings with the member 22 and held associated therewith in the manner above described. However, should the fence fabric become loose at any time, the pivot 33 which is tapered, can be readily and easily moved in the arcuate shaped slots 32 so as to p osition the pivot in the bearings at the op posite ends of the slots, thus moving both, the pivot and the member 23 into closer relation with the member 22 to more effectively clamp the fence fabric between said parts.
It will be noted that the opening 27 in the member 23 is arranged a little higher than the opening in the men'ibci' 22 which accommodates the-bolt 26, so that when the bolt is passed through the opening 27 and the nut 28 tightened the pivot is prevented from rising or lifting out of the bearings Set or 35. The inner surface of the member 23 is round so as to not engage the fence fabric while the latter is being stretched, While the middle portion of said member is thicker and wider than the end portions so as to sustain pressure. It will be noted that the component parts of the fence .post can be easily and quickly as sembled or disassembled as the occasion may require, and compactly arranged when disassembled.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction illustrated, and as such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is 1. Ina fence post, a fixed section including a bottom, a pivot section, said bottom having spaced arcuate shaped slots adjacent the meeting ends of said sections, the pivot of said section being movable in said slots for varying the distance between said sections, and means for holding said sections fixed in clamping relation.
2. In a fence post, a fixed section of angular formation in cross section and open alone one side, pivoted section arranged within said bottom and movable between the walls of said fixed sections, said fixed section having spaced a-rcuate shaped slots adjacent the meeting ends of the respective sections, said sections having notches on their adjacent edges, the pivot for the pivoted section being movable Within slots to vary the distance between said sections, and means for holding said sections in clamping relation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEO J. ALIG.
