Description

J. B. HYDE Improvement in the Construction of an Illustrating Steam-Engine No. 132,289. Patented Oct. 15,1872.
9% fl 1' I PATENT OFFICE.
J. BURROWS HYDE, OF NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ILLUSTRATING STEAM-ENGINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,289, dated October 15, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. BURRows HYDE, of
I the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new, useful, substantial, and cheap method for constructing and combining a workin g sectional model and an elevation drawing of a steam-engine, showing at the same time the external view and the interior or movable parts in proper position, proportion, and action, as well as the means by which each part is actuated, the several parts being distinct and yet mechanically combined and properly connected, as with a Working engine of any required size, so as to clearly demonstrate and familiarly illustrate each separate function and purpose of the different parts and movements, and the combination of that most useful and valuable and most familiar of inventions, and yet popularly so little understood or comprehended.
The purpose of the invention is to have a simple and convenient instrument for instructing parties unacquainted with the internal parts and action of the steam-engine, and particularly designed for use in colleges and schools.
I make use of proper molds for the several parts, preferring them to be cut in cast-iron, into which molds I cast common type-metal; but other metals or compounds may be employed. The several parts are afterward properly united and secured to the plane surface or bottom of a covered box of wood or other material in such a manner as to allow all the moving parts to be actuated freely and properly when motion or rotation is given to a crank or other device turned by the hand, which contrivance should be at the back or on the side of the model.
The box I prefer to be about twelve inches square on the inside and one and a half inch deep, with a cover hinged on the edge below the model when held in an upright position. The drawing or exterior elevation is pasted upon the inside of the cover,-so that when the model is held upright each part of the exterior views shall appear under its proper position in the working plan.
Printed explanations, with letters of reference, and a simple method for calculating the proper proportions of the several parts of a steam-engine, should be attached to the back or plane work of the box, as practically useful to young machinists.
I claim as my invention A sectional working model of a steam-en: gine, constructed, mounted, and inclosed in a portable case or box in the manner described, as a new article of manufacture.
J. BURROWS HYDE.
Witnesses L. O. WARNER, FREDERIc HARVEY.
