MGR.
THOMAS SOWERBY, OF VANCOUVER,.BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
DISINFECTING DEVICE.
Application filed June 3, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SownRBY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain livering a specified quantity of any suitable disinfectant into the bowl of a water closet after it has been flushed from the tank, whereby the disinfectant is allowed to exercise its purifying properties throughout the period between flushings, during which time offensive gases are usually generated.
Further, the disinfectant is delivered to the bowl through the overflow, and flushing pipes of the tank, so that these parts also derive advantage from the disinfectant.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, reference being made to. the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which: v Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a flushing tank having this improved disinfecting device applied to it. v
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the disinfecting device showing the manner of delivery of the disinfectant.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4, an enlarged section of the disinfecting delivery measure.
In these drawings 2 represents theflushing tank and 3 the delivery pipe therefrom which is normally closed by a ball valve 4. The overflow pipe of the tank is represented by 5 which pipe is'connected to the flushing pipe 3 below the valve 4. y
The means by which the ball valve 4 is lifted to eflect the flushing is not illustrated, as not being material to the subject matter of this application which relates solely to the means for delivering a disinfectant to the flushing pipe and through it to the bowl.
Secured to any convenient position within the upper part of the tank 2 is a vessel 6 adapted to carry a liquid disinfectant. Vertically movable in this vessel 6 is a stem 7, which passes gland-packed through the bottom of the vessel and at its lower end is Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Nov. 25, 15919.
Serial No. 301,514.
connected to a float 8 and at the upper end is pivoted at 9 a spoon 10. The normal position of the spoon 10 is horizontally disposed so that as the float 8 descends with the level of the water during flushing, the spoon 10 is carried down into the liquid disinfectant, and as the water rises after the tank has been flushed and the ball 4 is closed on the flushing pipe 3, the float 8 rises with the water and lifts the spoon filled with the disinfectant liquid.
At the maximum limit of its rise the delivery end of the spoon encounters a cross wire 11 secured across the vessel 6 by which cross wire the spoon 10 is tilted on its pivot 9 and delivers its contents into a channel 12 which is fixed across the vessel 6 and passing through the wall. of that vessel, delivers into the open upper end of the overflow pipe 5, from which it flows into the flushing pipe 3 below the valve 4 and thence into the bowl of the closet where it remains to exercise its disinfecting properties until the neXt flushing occurs. 7
To prevent rotation of the stem 7 in its gland, which rotation would disarrange the tilting action of the spoon 10 a guide wire 13 is secured to the outside of the vessel 6, on which wire slides the eye of another wire let secured to and upwardly projecting from the float 8.
It must be distinctly understood that the essential feature of the invention resides in the automatic delivery of a disinfectant into the flushing pipe of a water closet or the like immediately after the same has been flushed. I do not, therefore, desire to be confined to the particular construction hereinbefore described and illustrated as, although the same is an eminently satisfactory arrangement, the same may be modified within wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now particularly described my invention, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
A disinfecting means, comprising the combination with a flushing tank and the overflow and delivery pipe therefrom, a disinfectant containing vessel secured in the upper part of the tank, a stem vertically movable through the bottom of the vessel,
said stem having an open container pivotally mounted on its upper end, and a float secured to its lower end, a channel projecting into'the vessel adjacent the container at tank', and provision adjacent the upper limit of the movement of the container for tilting it and v delivering its contents into the 10 channel.
In testimony whereof I'flfl'lX my signature.
THOMAS SOWERB?
