Description

a. GREGORY.
Improvement in Carpet-Fastenings.
No.132,282. Patented0ct.15,1 872.
UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE.
GEORGE GREGORY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGN OR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM H. COOPER, OF- SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,282, dated October 15, 1872.
of the same, and which said drawing consti-' tutes part of this specification, and represents, in
Figure 1, a plan view; Fig. 2, a sectional view on line :0 as; and in Fig. 3, a sectional view of the fastening detached.
This invention relates to a device for securing matting to the floor, with special reference to oil-cloth; the object being to secure the cloth to the floor to protect the edge and yet allow of the expansion or contraction of the matting. The invention consists in a plate or strip of sheet meta-1, rolled to form a shoulder longitudinally, so that one side secured to the floor, the other will overlap the edge of the matting, protecting the edge and securing it in position.
A is the fastening, formed, as seen in Fig. 3,
from sheet metal rolled to form a shoulder, a,
longitudinally in the strip, each side forming a flange, one of which is secured to the floor, the other overlapping the matting B, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. This overlapping protects the edge and allows the matting to expand or contract, as it unavoidably will. The fastening being secured to the floor and not to the matting is not affected by this expansion or contraction, but prevents the edge of the matting from rolling up or being injured by use.
While especially designed for matting as applied in pieces smaller than the room, this fastening is also applicable to securing ordinary carpet at the extreme edge of the floor.
I claim as my invention As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed fastening, consisting of a strip of metal forming two flanges, one of which is secured to the floor, the other overlapping the carpet or matting.
GEORGE GREGORY.
