Specification of Letters Patent. t t N 25,191
Application filed June 29, 1915. Srialflo. 36,921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. JoHNsoN,
a citizen of the United States residing at New Britain, in the county of l-lartford and have invented a new and improved Look, of which the following is a specification. H 7
My invention relates more especially to that class of locks in which the bolt is nor.- mally projected-into locking position, but which will yield to permit the closing of the door to which it is secured, and an object of my invention, amongothers, is to provide a lock of this kindthat shall be extremely simple and cheap in construction and effective in operation, and that shall be secure as against unauthorized use. One form of lock embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others,
may be attained, is illustrated in the accoinpanying drawings, in 'which- 'Figure 1 is a face view of my improved lock with the cover plate, and tumblers removed, and the barrelfcut "in section near the lower end thereof.' Y r Fig. 2 is a like view but with the cover plate only removed, the barrelbeing cut at a greater distance from the lower end than in Fig. 1, the parts being shown in locked position.
Fig. 3 is a like view showing the parts in unlocked position.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating the construction of the barrel.
Fig. 5 is a detail side view of the same with parts out in section to show the key cylinder.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the look.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 6 indicates a lock case in which a latch bolt 7 is slidably mounted and pressed outwardly by a spring, in a 'manner com mon to structures of this kind. A latch bolt locking slide 8 rests against the latch bolt and is guided in its sliding movements as by means of guide posts 9 projecting through slots 10 in said lockingslide. This slide has a bolt locking nose 11 at one end positioned to rest against a shoulder 12 on the latch bolt, and the slide also has a slide locking stud 13. Tumblers 14 are pivotally mounted upon one of the guide posts 9, these tumblers having slots 15 terminating port.
in slide locking recesses .16, said slots and recesses. being adapted to receive the slide lock- CONNECTICUT, -A CORPORATION OF ing stud 13 to permit movementof theslide 8 and also ,tolocateit inits retracted position. The latch bolt locking slidei'orms an important part of my invention as willbe hereinafter pointed out. Y
A barrelf17 is rotatably mounted within thecase, a key cylinder 18 secured to'the barrel forming a part of'its'rotatable sup} The reduced end of this'hcylinder projects into an'opening'in the case and a head 19 closely fits the inner wall of the barrel, resting against a flange 20, formed by the overturned edge at the end ofthe barrel. The body of the barrel projects through an opening in the opposite wall of the 'case from that in which the end of the key cylinder is located, the two walls of the case thus forming a rotatable bearing for thebarrel. p
The barrel is cut away as at 2l'n'ear its lower end for the reception of the tumblers 14, and a bolt actuator 2951s secured to this end of the barrel as by meansof 'a headed lug 23 fitting a notch Qt in one side of the barrel, the head of the lug resting against the outersurface of the barrel- The, reduced end of'the key cylinder projects through this actuator, the latter" resting against the shoulder formed by the reduced end of the key cylinder and being located between said shoulder and'the inner face of the wall of the case against.
bolt. "A knob 27 is secured to the barrel 7 outside of the case.
It will be noted that when the locking slide 8 is in its locking position with the nose 11 against the shoulder 19. on the latch bolt, the latter is dead, that'is, it cannot be moved or disengaged from the keeper as by means of an instrument thrust against the beveled end of the bolt, or otherwise. The key is not employed to throw the latch bolt, but serves merely to position the locking slide to lock the latch bolt against movement and thus cause it to become a dead bolt or to release the locking slide and thus cause the latch bolt to become a live 2O fronitoaj greater orlesser degree and yet be Withinthe spirit-and intent of the lntven'tion,
' The parts are operated as follows: A y inserted in the key cylinder will have its notches and points positioned to movethetumblers sothat the stud 13 may pass through the slots 15 into" the locking recesses 16, whereby the latch bolt slide I will beheld in its retracted position, said fslidefbeing moved to this positionby en gagement of the edge of the key within the slide operating notch 28. In this position f; of the-slide the locking projection 11 is removed from engagement with the latch boltso 'tha't'the latter may be movedto' dis- "i turned to operate-the latch bolt.
engage it from its keeper and this may be efiected as bymeans of the knob 27 by which the barrel and bolt actuator may be 1 While I have shown and described herein a satisfactory construction of a lock embodying my' ideas this'may be. departed 1 I claim;" a r I 1.' A lock including acase, 'a latch bolt located within the-case, a barrel extending into the case, an actuator removably secured to one, end ofthe barrel-andeXtending across it and in engagement with the latch bolt to operate it, and a key cylinder rotatably located within the'barrel, and extending through said actuator to form a. support therefor.v
V 2. A lock including a case, a latch bolt and tumblers located within the case, a barrel extending into the case, an actuator ex tending across the barrel and' comprising one end thereof and one wall of an opening through the side of the barrel intothe ins terior thereof to receive said'tumblers, and

rel extending through one wallof'the case a; to the interior thereof, saidbarrel being cut away on one side to receive the tumblers, an actuator secured to the end of the barrel and in engagement with the latch boltto operate-it, and a key' cylinder -projecting [into the barrel and extending through said actuator into said case to form 'a'bearing for one end of the barrel.
A lock including a case, a latch bolt to the interior thereol and'having anotch in its edge, an actuator removably' secured to the barrel and having a grooved lug to receive the edges of the :notch in the barrel, said actuator projecting to engage'the latch bolt, and a keycylinder having a reduced and tumblers located'within the case,-a bar-' i rel extendingthrough one wall of the case end projecting through said actuatorinto the case, its opposite end being headed to fit the interior of said barrel.
