JAMES S. STANLEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
BRUSH.
Toall whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, JAMES S. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marlon and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to a brush adapted to be used for shaving and similar purposes.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a brush of the character stated in which the bristles of the brush head may have their effective lengths readily shortened so as to produce, in effect, a comparatively stiff brush for working the lather into the shavers beard by massaging so as to lnsure softening of the hairs of the beard preparatory to shaving.
A further object is to provide simple and eiilcient means for holding the bristles of the brush head in the manner stated, this means being positively secured in operative position so as to effectually eliminate accidental displacement thereof.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a sectional view through a shaving brush constructed in accordance with my invention, the collar for holding the bristles being shown in retracted or inoperative position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the collar ex- 7 tended.
The brush designated generally by A may be of any suitable or standard construction, but preferably includes a substantially cylindrical body 1 in one end of which is secured a handle 2, the brush head 3 being secured in the other end of the body. Body 1 is provided, adjacent its inner end, with an outer annular threaded shoulder 4 and, adjacent its outer end, with a similar shoulder 5. The shoulders at and 5 are adapted to be engaged by a similarly threaded inner annular shoulder 6 provided at the inner end of a relatively broad collar 7 the interior diameter of which corresponds to the exterior diameter of the shoulders 4t and 5, this collar normally fitting snugly about body 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

and being of slightly greater length than the body. When the collar 7 is in its normal or inner position, the inner end of this collar fits snugly against the relatively broad annular shoulder 2 provided at the inner end of handle 2, the exterior of the collar being substantially flush with the outer edge of the shoulders so as to form a continuation thereof thus presenting a neat appearance and closely resembling a shaving brush of ordinary construction.
In using the brush, a lather is worked u in the well known manner with the sleeve in its inner position, as in Fig. 1, thus permitting ready flexing or bending of the bristles of head 3. After the lather has been worked up, collar 7 is unthreaded from shoulder 4t and is moved into its outer position, being secured upon shoulder 5. In this position, the outer end of the collar engages snugly about the bristles of the brush head 3 so as to tightly confine the same thus producing, in effect, a relatively short and comparatively stiif head which may be readily utilized for massaging and working the lather into the heard so as to effectually soften the hairs thereof. As will be noted more clearly from Fig. 2, the outer end of collar 7 is beveled inwardly, as at 7, thus causing a slight spreading of the outer end portion of the brush head so as to provide a rounded formation which is well adapted for working the lather into the beard, this rounding of the head also permitting slight giving or flexing of the bristles, such as is desirable when using the brush in the manner stated. As will be noted, the screw threaded shoulders 4: and 5 of body 1, cooperate with shoulder 6 of sleeve 7 to positively secure this sleeve in adjustment upon the body so as to effectually eliminate all possibility of accidental displacement of the sleeve when the brush is in use. Also, when it is desired to remove the sleeve or collar 7 for cleaning or repairing the brush, this may be readily accomplished by threading shoulder 6 off of shoulder 5, after which the collar may be slid over the brush head, this collar or sleeve being readily replaced when desired by reversing this operation.
As will be readily appreciated, it may be desirable in practice to resort to slight changes in details of construction and ar rangement of parts of the device, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall nally of the body and provided adjacent its inner end with interior threads adapted to engage the threads of said body for securing the collar in adjustment thereon, said collar being adapted when in extended position to fit snugly about the head of the brush adjacent the outer end thereof for confining the bristles of the brush head.
2. The combination with a brush including a body, a brush head secured in one end thereof, and a handle secured in the other end of the body and provided adjacent its inner end with an outer annular shoulder extendin beyond the inner end of said handle, said ody being exteriorly threaded adjacent each end only; of a collar fitting about said body and slidable longitudinall thereof, said collar being interiorly threaded at its inner end for engagement with the threads of the body for positively secur' the collar in adjustment thereon, the sho der of the handle positively limiting inward movement of the collar, the collar being adapted when in extended position to en snugly about the brush head adjacent t e outer end thereof for confining the bristles of said head.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. STANLEY.
