To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW B. PURII-TG TON a citizen of the United States, residing at langor, in the county of Penobsoot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending and Recording Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for vending certain commodities whereby a record. will be required before the sale can be made. The invention is particularly directed to the sale of gasolene by the use of the so-called Bowser? pump which is commonly situated outside of the garage while the record of the sale is made, if at all, inside of the garage. in. selling gasolene by the Bowser pump it often happens that after the gasolene has been drawn the clerk neglects to make a charge or a record oi the sale thereby occasioning either the loss of the gasolene or a dispute over the transaction. In such a case the loss of one lot of gasolene may ofiset the profits of many gallons.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which will make it impossible to draw any gasolene from the pump without first making a record of the sale. 7
The device consists of a registering apparatus in which a web of recording paper is advanced by means of rollers as in the ordinary cash register. The pump and the crank of the register being normally locked, the act of making the record first unlocks the crank and the turning of the crank unlocks the pump. The operation of the pump then automatically punctures a hole in the record paper for each gallon drawn so that the rec- 0rd slip contains a tally of the gallons of gasolene drawn from the pump.
The invention may be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a central longitudinal section through the register showing also the upper portion of a Bowser pump and the connection with thesame.

Referring to the drawings: 2 represents a casing designed to contain the recording mechanism and which may be in its general construction like the cash register of commerce.
A Web of recording paper 3 is drawn from a roll l by a pair of rollers 5 and 6, in the usual manner characteristic of these devices. Uther webs and carbon copying sheets may be used in connection with the web 3 but are not here shown since they do not affect the novel features of my invention. The roller 6 is provided with the usual crank handle 7 and in use the paper web is drawn-over a supporting plate 8 which is pressed downward when a record is made on the paper.
The plate 8 is pivoted at its rear end at 9 and its forward portion rests on supporting springs 10 only one of which is shown (see Fig. 2).
The gasolene pump is normally locked and is released either directly or indirectly by the depression of the supporting plate in the act of making the record.
As here shown the pump is locked by a locking latch 11 which engages the gear 12. This gear being operatedby, the handle 13. An electromagnet 15 releases the latch 11 from the ear, the latch being kept in engagement by a spring 14.

in a rotary switch 19. The circuit is completed by a line 22 leading from the metal casing a battery 20 or other source of electricity and a line 21 leading from the battery back to the magnet. Thus when the rotary switch 19 which is of fiber or other nonconducting material, is turned so that the contact point 18 comes in contact with the spring 17 the circuit is closed and the magnet 15 acts to unlock the pump. The pump remains unlocked so long as the contact point of the switch 19 remains in contact with the spring 17. The rotary switch is normally open and is locked in place so that it cannot be turned to close the circuit until an impression is made on the paper in the act of writing the name of the purchaser or making some record.
The rotary switch is unlocked, as herein shown, by the following means: I secure on the roller 6 a gear 21 which forms one of a train of gears including the gear 23 and 26. The rotary switch already described is secured to the gear 23 and to the face of the gear 26 I secure a cam 27 in which is a notch 28. This notch is constructed like a ratchet tooth and it engages normally an elongated pawl 29 weighted at its rear end by a weight 30.
The weight 30 holds the pawl normally in engagement with the cam and prevents the rolls being turned to advance the paper.
The pawl 29 is released by a post 31 the lower end of which rests on the upper side of the pawl while the upper end is located immediately below the plate 8 and is provided with an enlarged head. This piate 8 being supported by springs, is capable of being slightly depressed until it brings on the pin 32 (Fig. 1).
The pawl is automatically held in engaged position while the record of the purchase is being made on the paper. After the record is made the crank handle 7 is turned to an upright position and when this position the contact point 18 closes the circuit and unlocks the pump.
To hold. the pawl 29 temporarily in its released position the post passes loosely through a vertically disposed sleeve 33 hav ing a plate 36 on its under side, which plate is adapted to engage a notch 34: in the post to hold it down (Fig. 8). The notch is pressed into engagement with the plate 36 its disby a spring 35 attached to .the sleeve. After the record has been made and the post is to be reset in its normal position, it is pushed away from the plate 36 until the weight 30 lifts it to its normal position.
As herein shown the post is 1i" pushed away from the plate by a l 37 which rests'loosciy on a fulcrum supper 38. The forward end of this lever bent downward and this bent end is struck by a pin 39 placed in the gear 26 11). The
pin 39 is so located that it bears down on the forward end of this lever 37 and causes the opposite end to lift the post and at the same time pushing it away from the engaging plate 36. The post 31 is thus restored to its original, or normal, position and the machine set ready for the next record. The complete operation of the pump releasing mechanism is as follows:
A record is first made of the name of the purchaser by writing his name on the paper web. This depresses the plate 8 which in turn depresses the post 31 and releases the pawl 29, holding it down by the engagement of the notch in the post. The crank haudlc now turned from its noruuil horizontal to an upright position. This movement brings the contact point 18 into contact with the contact spring 17 and completes the circuit unlocking the pump.
A ratchet wheel 80 and a pawl on the shaft with roll 6 prevents the handle roll from being turned backward.
After the oil has been drawn and recorded by tally marks on the paper, the crank is turned to its original horizontal position, pushing upward the post 31 as described and advancing the paper to a point where the slip can be torn off as in the cash register now in common use.
Mechanism is employed -tor impressing a tally mark on the record slip for every gallon of gasolene withdrawn by the pump. As here shown I make use of a series of needles so located that they may punch a series of holes in the paper, these needles. being actuated one after the other by the mechanism of the pump. One cycle oi the pump actuates one of the needles to puncture the paper.
The plate 8 is provided with a 1()\\' of small holes 41 at the forward end and through these holes the needles 4O reciprocate from the inner side of the plate, the needles in turn being forced upward and withdrawn so that a series of holes is puuctured in the paper. Each needle passes upward through a guide 42 secured on the under side of the plate and it is surroumlcd by a coiled spring 43 by which it is withdrawn. The base of the necdic is seated in one or" the arms of a bell crank lever 41, the series of levers being pivoted in a hanger 45 by means of a suitable shaft. Each of the levers 44 is actuated by a bout hanging arm 47, the series of arms being pivoted in .a hanger 48 by means of a suitable shalt from side to side of the machine. The arms 50 are arranged radially and helically about the shaft and they are here shown as 20 in number corresponding with the number of needles and also with the number of gallons contained in the storage tank and capable of being drawn by the pump. The shaft 51 is journaled in the lower end of a swinging frame 52 pivoted to a hanger be,- neath the plate and the frame has a rearward extension '53 which by beingt depressed brings the frame and the sha with its radial arms forward to a limited extent. Each time the frame swings forward one of thearms 50 impinges on the end of the arm 54 and causes the corresponding needle to j punch a hole in the paper.
Means are provided for turning this shaft 51 to bring the arms in succession to act against one-of the bars 54 and to return the shaft and the arms 50 to their normal initial position. This is necessary so that the first arm 50 on the shaft will be in position to impinge on the first bar 54 at each operation 'of the machine.
.The shaft 51 is returned to its normal position by a spiral spring 55 secured to the shaft and to the frame 52.
The forward rotation'of the shaft and its arms is effected by a ratchet wheel 56 which is secured on the end of the shaft 51 and engaged by a pawl 57 pivoted on the lower end of a hanger 58 secured on the under side of the plate (see Fig. 6).
A second pawl 66 having a ratchet pin 61 prevents the wheel from turning backward when the pawl 57 is disengaged. The pawl 66 has a spring to hold it into engagement with the ratchet wheel 56 and a lateral projection on the pawl 66 is connected by a link 63 with the pawl 57 so that when the pawl 57 is released from the ratchet the pawl 66 will also be released. A pin or stop 64 on the. edge of the ratchet wheel impinges on the pin 61 when the wheel is in its normal position or in a position to'start and serves to check the backward motion of the wheel and shaft when the spring 55 returns the shaft to its initial position. The pin 64 is located near one face of the ratchet wheel and as the wheel turns passes at one side of the pawl 57 and inside the'link 63 as shown in Fig. 10.
The wheel is turned to bring the arms 50 in succession in contact with its appropriate bar 54 by swinging the frame 52 forward. This allows one of the .arms 50 to push one of the bars 54 forward thus actuating one of the pins and puncturing the paper. At the same time the ratchet wheel 56 swings away from the fixed pawl 57 and allows the pawl to slip back one tooth or rather it carries one tooth over the end of the pawl. When new the frame returns to its ori final position which it does by the action of spring 68 (Fig. 7), the wheel turns one notch and brmgs the next adjacent arm 50 incontact with its corresponding bar 54. Means are provided for releasin the pawls 57 and 66 when the desired number of gallons have been pumped out and indicated on the record slip so that the shaft and arms 54 may be returned to their initial position ready to record the first gallon.
As here shown a push bar 68 held in guides 69 and 70 abuts against the forward end of the pawl 57, the forward end of the bar being located alongside of the face of the cam wheel 27. A pin 67 in the cam wheel strikes the pin 71 in the bar at the conclusion of the record. This pushes backward and downward the pawl 57, drawing downward the link 63 and rearwardly the pawl 66 and thus releases the wheel so that it may turn backward. When the wheel is released the spiral spring 55 turns it back until the pin 64 strikes the pin 61 when the Wheel will be in its initial position with the first of the arms 50 in contact with the first of the bars 54. 1
Means actuated by each stroke of the pump are providedforintermittently depressing the arm 53 of the frame and throwing theframe forward. These means may be mechanical or electricalor other suitable means. As here shown I make use of an electromagnet 72 located where it will attract an armature on the rear end of the eX-.
tension 53 of the frame 52.
' The magnet is connected by a line 73 to a terminal 7 5 passing through battery 20 and by a line 74 to a binding post on the pump. The terminal 75 is so located that each time the ratchet 76 is lifted a contact is made with the terminal 75 and the circuit closed operating the magnet and swinging forward the frame 52. It will be understood that each time the ratchet '76 is raised a gallon of oil is pumped. The complete operation of the device is as follows:
When it is desired to draw some of the gasoline, the name of the purchaser is written on the web of paper, using a pencil or other device which will be sure to depress the plate 8. This releases the pawl 29 and holds it down so that the handle 7 may be turned to a vertical position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. WVhen the handle is in this position, the web of paper has advanced a short distance leaving space for a row of punctures beneath the name. The contact 18 is then in contact with Spring 17, the lock circuit is closed and the pump unlocked. The handle is left in this position and the pump is operated, drawing off any, desired number of gallons up to thecapacity of the pump which in this case is 20. Each time a gallon is drawn a puncture is made in the paper by one of the needles beginning at the side farthest from the handle.
Thus no gasolene can be drawn from the tank without some sort of a record being made of it. It may be charged to the customer or a cash sale may be minuted.
This device, or parts of it, may be used for vendingother articles which are kept in a locked receptacle, besides gasolene.
Instead of unlocking the rotary switch by the depression of the supporting plate, the act of depressing the plate may be made to close a circuit.
In Fig. 12 I have here shown such an arrangement where when the plate 8 is depressed by the act, of writing the record it comes in contact with a contact point 75 and closes the unlocking circuit through wires 76, T8 and a binding post 79 on the under side of the plate 8. The depression of the plate thus acts directly to relase the lock on the pump rather than indirectly through the rotary switch.
The operation of the rolls by a crank and the advancing of the web of record paper may be otherwise accomplished than as here shown.
W hen I speak of a cycle of the pump I intend to be understood as meaning the delivery i'rom the pump of unit quantities of liquid as gallonsor quarts. This may be zu'comlflisllcd by strokes of the pump which discharge the unit quantity as here shown at each cycle or by a pump delivering a larger quantity with electrical or other connections arranged tobe operated at the delivery of each unit quantity.
\Vhile I have shown the pump as being unlocked by an electromagnet, it may be unlocked by other torinsot' electrical or mechanical means operated as shown by the act of making the record.
Although I have spoken of the Bowser pump in connection with my device it is evident that any'pump of this character might be used.
I claim:

In a recording and vending device the combination of a container for the goods to be sold, a latch for locking the container, an electroniagmst for releasing said latch, a normally open locked rotary switch, an electric circuit including said magnet and said switch, a spring supported plate, a web of recording paper passing over said plate and means for unlocking said switch actuated by the depression of said plate:

In a recording and vendin device the combination of a container for the goods to be sold, a latch for locking the container, an electromagnet for releasing said latch, an electric circuit including said magnet, a locked rotary switch in said circuit, a web of recording paper, a plate for supporting the same and means actuated by the act of making a record on said paper for unlocking said switch.
7. In a recording and vending device for liquids the combination of a container for the liquids, a pump for intermittently drawing from the container a fixed quantity of liquid, a web of recording paper, a supporting plate therefor, a lock for said pump, locked mechanism for unlocking said look from a distance, mechanism whereby the unlocking mechanism'i released by the act of making a record on said recording paper, a tallying mechanism for impressing tally marks on said recording paper and means started by said pump for operating said tallying mechanism at each cycle of the pump.
8. In a recording and vending device for liquids the combination of a container for the liquids, a pump for intermittently drawing from the container a fixed quantity of liquid, a web of recording paper, a yieldingly supported plate over which said paper passes, a lock for said pump, locked means for unlocking said lock, connecting mech'anism whereby the unlocking-means are released by the depression of said plate, a tallying mechanism for impressing tally marks on said recording paper and means actuated by said pum for operating said tally mechanism at eac cycle of the pump.
9. In a recording and vending device for liquids, the combination of a container for I locked means for unlocking said lock, connecting mechanism whereby the unlocking means is released by the act of making a record on said recording paper, a tallying mechanism for puncturing holes'in the re cording paper and means started by said pump for operating said mechanism at each cycle of the pump.

In a recording and vending device, the combination of a container for the articles to be sold, a latch for locking said container, an electromagnet for releasing said latch, a web of recording paper, a yieldingly held supporting plate for the same, iced rolls p for advancing said recording paper, a train of gears engaging therewith, a rotating switch on one of said gears, an electric circuit including said magnet and said rotating switch, a locking cam on one of said gears a counterweight pawl for locking said cam,
connecting mechanism between said plate and aid pawl for releasing said pawl and said gears by the depression of said whereby said rotating switch is permltted to be brought into position to close said circuit and unlock said pump andmeans actuated by the rotation of said gears to raise said post to its normal position.-

In a device of the character described thecombination of a web of recording paper, a yieldingly supporting plate over which said paper passes, a series of perforations being formed in said plate, a series of needles adapted to pass through said perforations to puncture said paper, a series of pivoted elbow levers each of which is connected at one end to one of said needles, a helical spring surrounding said needle and interposed between the plate and the lever to retract the needle, a series of swinging hangers pivoted beneath the plate, a series of links connecting said levers and hanger and means for pressing said hangers forward in succession for operating said needles. o

In a device for recording and vending liquids, the combination of a container for the liquids, a pump for; intermittently drawin off definite quantities of the liquid, a lock or the pump, a magnet for releasing said lock, a rotary switch locked in an open position, a web of recording paper, a yieldingly supported plate over which the paper is drawn, means actuated by the depression of said plate for unlocking said switch, series of needles positioned to paper and mechanism started y the mech anism of the pump for operating said needles in succession.

In a machine of the character described the combination of a web of recording paper, a pump for intermittently drawing a fixed quantityof liquid, a series of needles below the paper, each positioned to puncture the same, a pivoted elbow lever below each needle, the needle being-connected with one arm of said lever, a spring for retracting said needle, a swinging hanger,
a link connecting said hanger with said, elbow lever, a shaft, a series of arms arranged in equal space, radially and helically on said shaft and positioned to abut one after another agamst said hangers, a: plvoted frame 111 which said shaft is 1ournaled, mechanism connected with said pump for swinging said,
frame forward at each stroke of the pump and means for turning said shaft one space at each swing-of the frame.

In a machine of the character. described the combination of a web of recording paper, mechanism for advancing the same, a pump for intermittently drawing a fixed quantity of liquid, a series of needles below the paper, each positioned to puncture the same, a pivoted elbowlever below each needle, the needle being connected with one arm of said lever, a spring for retracting said needle, a swinging hanger, a link connecting said hanger with-said elbow lever, a shaft, a series of arms arranged rad ally and helically on said shaft and positioned to fao abut one after another against said hangers, a pivoted frame in which said shaft is journaled, mechanism connected with said pum for swinging said frame forward at eac stroke of the pump, a ratchet wheel for turning said shaft one space at each swing of the frame, a pawl engaging said ratchet wheel, a spring for returning said shaft back to its initial position, a bar for releasing said pawl, means actuated by the paper advancing mechanism for pushing said bar backward to release said pawl.
24. In a machine of the character described the combination of a supporting plate, a frame pivoted at its upper por tion to said plate, a shaft journaled at its lower position, said shaft having aseries of arms radially and helically disposed, a ratchet Wheel, means for swinging said frame forward and a spring for retracting the same, a pawl connected with said plate engaging said ratchet wheel, an auxiliary pawl for engaging said ratchet wheel, and pivoted to said frame, a bar for releasing both'of said pawls and a spring for turning said shaft backward to its initial positlon.

In a device of the character described the combination of a pump for vending liquids, a lock for said pump, an electromagnet for releasing said lock, an electric circuit, meansfor closing said circuit at each cycle ofsaid pump, a Web of recording paper, a yieldingly held supporting plate therefor, a swinging frame pivoted on the under side of said plate for swinging the frame at each cycle of the pump, a shaft journaled in said frame, arms radially and helically arranged on said shaft, means for partially rotating said shaft at each swing of the frame, a series of needles positioned to puncture said paper, connecting mechanism whereby each swing of the frame causes one of said arms to actuate one of said needles to puncture the paper, a rotating switch normally locked in an open position, a pawl for locking said switch, a pair of feed rolls for advancing said paper, a train of gears operated by one of said feed rolls, means for unlocking said switch actuated by the depression of said plate and an electric circuit including said lock releasing magnet and said rotating switch.
