CHARLES FORTH, F OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL CASH REGISTER COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO, (INCORPORATED RAILROAD-TICKET-ISSUING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented sept, 14 1915 Application filed October 31, 1913. Serial No. 798,567.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES FORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Carleton and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railous destinations traversed by the different lines and automatically accumulate the totals' of the faresas the tickets are issued and also-to record upon a record strip the destination of each ticket issued and the number ticket issuin of tickets issued to such destination.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims, and a pre ferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification.
Of said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the improved machine. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the mechanism. Fig. 2 is a detail view of tie mechanism for operating the inking devices. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the indicating mechanism for indicating the destination to which the ticket is to be issued.- Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the registering mechanism. Fig. 5 is a side ele- 'vation of the registering mechanism with the casing therefor in section. Fig-.6 is a top plan view ofthe inking mechanism. Fig. 7 is an enlarged side view of-one of the destination devices. Fig. S-is an end View of two of the adjacent destination devices. Fig. 9 is an enlarged view partly in section of the ticket severing mechanism. Fig. 10 is a bottom plan view of adjacent destination devices. Fig. 11 is a detail view of the consecutive numbering devices carried by each destination device. Fig.1). is an enlarged view of the operating head for the destination devices. Fig. l is a side view of Fig. 12. Fig. 14 is an enlarged sectional view of the food rolls for the ticket strip.
' Fig. 15 is a side view of the feed rolls carrying the grand total consecutive number device. Fig. 16 is a detail view of the motor. and a part of the driving connections. Fig. 17 is a partial plan view of the record strip. Figs. 18, 19 and 20 are-detail views of the tickets issued by the machine.
Described in general terms the machine comprises a. rotatable drum having spirally mounted thereon a plurality of destination devices, any one of which is arranged to be brought into cooperative relation with ticket issuing and registering mechanisms. This drum is provided with a spiral'axis which as said drum is rotated shifts the drum and destination devices carried thereby axially. An indicating device is provided which is driven by the rotation of the drum and is arranged to display the destination device that is in cooperative relation with the ticket issuingand registering mechanisms. When the proper destination device is positioned, a switch lever is operated which throws on the current to the motor for the operating mechanism, during the operation of which the-positioned destination device is first partially depressed and while in this partially operated position, it is inked by suitable mechanism driven by the motor operating mechanism. This latter mechanism also operates the feeding devices for the ticket strip so as to bring the strip upon the platen adjacent to the partially operated destination device, after which the operating mechanism willcomplete the operation of the destinatiorrdevice and stamp the ticket with the fare, the destination, and the number of tickets issued thereto. A severing mechanism is also provided which is driven by the operating mechanism to sever that portion of the ticket strip bearing the fare, the destination and the number of tickets issued thereto from the remainder of the strip,
-which ticket will then be handed to the patron. By a suitable inkin ribbon the information recorded upon the icket isalso transferred to-the record strip which is stored within the machine. Each destination device is provided with amount determining fingers'which when said device is operated aetuates a registering mechanism an extent corresponding to the fare represented by the operated destination device. Near the end of the operation of he machine the motor circuit is automatically broken and the parts arrested at the end of a complete operation. Vvith this brief outline of the operation of the machine and the functions performed thereby a detail description of the various parts which go to make up the machine will now be given.
A. drum 1 provided with a spiral axis 2 is mounted in the head of a frame work 3. This drum has mounted thereon a plurality of destination devices 1 which are arranged spirally upon said drum. As the drum is rotated, its spiral axis 2 will shift said drum axially so as to bring any desired destination device 4 into coiiperative relation with the ticket issuing and registering mechanisms hereinafter more particularly described.
Each of the destination devices 4 (Figs. 1, 7, 8 and 10) is provided with a head 5 carrying a consecutive numbering device 6 and amount determining fingers 7, the former being arranged to stamp upon the issued ticket the number of tickets stamped by that particular destination device, while the amount determining fingers are arranged to actuate the registering mechanism an extent corresponding to the fare to the destination represented by said device. The printing face of the head 5 of a destination device carries type 1000, as clearly shown in Fig. 10, for printing the name of the destination station on the tickets together with the fare. Projecting inwardly from each destination device is a pair of rods 8 which are guided at their inner ends by a tube 9 mounted within the drum 1, while the outer end of said rods are guided by recesses 10 formed upon the surface of the drum. The rods 8 are provided with collars 11 which abut against the outer surface of the tube 9, and against which the inner ends of coiled springs 12 surrounding said rods abut while the outer ends of said springs abut against the inner surface of the outer shell forming the drum proper. .By these springs 12 each destination device is held in the position shown in Fig. .l of the drawings. Each of these devices is also provided with an in wardly extending rod 13 which is arranged to be brought beneath an actuating plunger '11 (Figs. 1, 12 and 13) which is mounted within the head 15 of an arm 10 extending from the main frame work 3. 'At the beginning of the operation of the operating mechanism, the plunger is partially depressed, by which the positioned destination device is also partially depressed and near the end of the operation of said mechanism the plunger is completely depressed which in turn completes the operation of the partially operated destination device. The drum 1 is provided with a. railing 17 by which the attendant may rotate the drum. An arm 18 extending upwardly from the arm 16 of the main frame is provided with roller bearings 19 upon which a tube 20 forming the center of the drum rotates. The rearward plate of said drum is also provided with roller bearings 21 which as the drum is revolved roll upon a portion of the frame work 3. The purpose of these roller bearings is obvious is to provide for the easy rotation. of the drum.
Extending rearwardly from the spiral axis 2, is a shaft 22 (Fig. l) to which is splined a pinion This pinion 23 meshes with a gear 24 secured to one end of a stub shaft 25 mounted in the main frame 3. At its other end this stub shaft is provided with a gear 26 which meshes with a similar gear 27 secured to an indicator disk 28 (Figs. 1
and 3) loosely mounted upon the shaft 22.
The above described gear connection between the drum and the indicating disk, as it will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, is so proportioned that a full rotation of the drum 1 will impart only a quarter rotation of the disk 28. This disk 28 has near its outer edge the diiferent destination points from the issuing ofiice stamped thereon, as
shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In this figure the disk is divided into two classes of fare, namely, half fare and full fare, with the names of the destinations upon said disk duplicated. The drum 1 is of course provided with as many destination devices 4 as there are destination points upon the indicator 28 and these destination points on the indicator are in such relation with the destination devices 4 that when any one of the latter is in cooperative relation with the ticket issuing and registering mechanisms the corresponding destination point is displayed by the indicator disk 28. It is of course to be understood that the amount determining fingers 7 carried by the half fare destination devices will actuate the registering mechanism half the extent only as will the corresponding destination devices of the full fare class. The half fare destination devices are also provided with the characters 1/2 which are printed in connection with the destination, the num ber of tickets issued thereto and the fare upon the ticket, Fig. 19, and the record strip for the purpose of distinguishing the half fare tickets from the whole fare tickets. A bell crank member 30 (Fig. 3) is mounted upon the frame work 3 and the end of the horizontal member of said bell crank is provided with an arrow head 31 which as the disk 28 is rotated, points to the different destination devices that are brought into cooperative relation with the actuating plunger 14. The outer edge of the disk 20 is serrated and is provided with notches 32 into which enters a spring-pressed plunger 33 carried by an arm 34 secured to a portion of the frame work 3. This plunger is for the purpose of preventing accidental displacement of the disk 28 and the drum 1 and also to insure proper alinement between the actuating plunger 14 and the positioned destination device 4.
Having brought the desired destination device into coiiperative relation with the actuating plunger 14, a switch lever 35 (Fig.
1) is drawn outwardly, bywhich moveframe work of the machine. These contacts 37 and 39 are then held in engagement by a spring pressed plunger ll which engages with one of a pair of notches are formed upon the hub of the member 36. As the contacts 37 and 39 are brought into engagement the circuit for the motor 43' (Fig. 16) is closed. The armature shaft 44 of the motor is provided with a Worm 45 (Figs. 1 and .16) which meshes with a worm gear 46 secured near the outer end to one of the drive shafts 47 of the machine. This drive shaft is provided with a mutilated beveled gear 48 which drives a beveled gear 49 secured to the lower end of a shaft 50 which shaft at its upper end is provided with a beveled pinion 51. This last mentioned pinion meshes with a similar pinion 52 secured to the rear end "ofa shaft 53 which at its forward end is provided with a disk 54 (Figs. 12 and 13).\ This shaft 53 extends through the arms 18 nnd f le frame work 3 and the disk 54-is securedo the outer end thereof and has extending therefrom a roller 55 which plays in an elongated slot 56formed in the upper end of the plunger frame 14;. By reference to Fig. 16 it will be seen that a portion of the teeth of the mutilated gear 48 is normally in engagement with the teeth of the gear 49 so that as the motor circuit is closed and the gear 484s driven in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 16, the beveled gear 49 will be partially rotated and through the shaft 50, beveled pinions 51 and 52 and shaft 53, rotate the disk 54 and through the roller 55 carried thereby partially lower the actuating plunger 14 which in turn partially depress the destination device in cotiperative relation therewith against the tension of its springs 12. In this partially operated position "of the destination device, the inking mechanism hereinafter described will be operated ,t'oink the partially operated destination device.
The shaft 47 at its extreme fearward end (Fig. 16) is provided with afing 57 which is normally engaged by the up r end of an arm 58 secured to a stub shat 59 suitably mounted upon the motor frame. This stub shaft has also secured thereto an arm 60 to the free end of which isconnected the lower end of a link 61, the upper end of the latter being secured to the prong 62 of the lever 36 (Fig.1). As the switch lever 35 is moved.
forwardly to close the .motor circuit, as previously described, the link 61 will be moved upwardly, by which movement the arms 58 and 60 will be rocked in a clock wise direction (Fig. 16) thereby withdrawing the arm. 58 from engagement with the finger 57 secured to the driving shaft 47. i
This withdrawal of the arm 58 from engagement with the finger 57 occurs substantially simultaneously with the closing of the motor circuit so that the parts driven by the motor may then be free to be operated. The shaft 50 has secured thereto approximately at its center a disk 63 which is provided witha camming lug 64.. This lug near the end of the rotation of the shaft engages with the lug 65 formed upon the upper edge of the prong 62 and cams said prong downwardly or in an anticlockwise direction (Fig. 1) thereby withdrawing the contacts 37 carried by the prongs 38 from engagement with the contacts 39, thus breaking the motor cir cuit. As the prong 62 is cammed down wardly, the link 61 will also move down wardly and through the-arm 60 and shaft 59 rock the upper end of the arm 58 into i the path of the finger "57 and thus arrest position. The mutilated gear 48 is provided with a sufiicient number of teeth so that for each complete rotation of said gear afull rotation willbe imparted to the gear 49 and shaft 50, the latter through gears 51v and 52 rotating shaft 53. That portion of the gear 48 having the teeth cutaway is so designed as to lock the gear 49 and parts connected therewith while said cutaway is passing the gear 49.
The main frame 3 has extending forthe parts when the same reach their normal wardly therefrom a platform 66 upon which I is rigidly mounted an auxiliary frame 67' supporting the ticket issuing and registering mechanisms. A ticket roll 68 (Fig. 2) is supported as at 69 upon the auxiliary frame 67 and the strip from this r'oll is led over an idler 70 between rollers 71, 72, 73 and 74.
plate for printingany suitable information upon the face of the ticket, as shown in Fig. 18 while the roller 72 is provided with de- The roller 71 is providedwith an electro vices for printing 'the date and the issuing Y station upon the back of the ticket, as shown in Fig. 20. The roller 73 is provided with numbering devices for printing upon the ticket the total number of tickets issued from the station where the machine is located,
which tota l'number is shown at 75 upon the face of the ticket 76 shown in Fig. 18. This numbering device comprises a plurality of wheels 77 suitably mounted 'in the roller 73, the units wheel of which is arranged to be advanced one step 'upon each rotation of the roller. .A stationary plate 78 is mounted in the auxiliary frame work 67 Fig. 15, and
this plate is provided with a cam groove 79 in which plays a roller 80, Fig. 11, projecting from one end of an arm 81. This arm at its other end is connected to an arm 82 supported upon a shaft 83 carrying the numbering wheels 77 and at its free end is provided with a pawl 81 for engaging the teeth of a ratchet 85 secured to the units wheel 86. As the roller 73 is rotated, the cam groove 79 formed in the stationary plate will reciprocate the link81, thereby rocking the arm 82 so as to advance the units wheel of the consecutive numbering device one step. A suitable transfer mechanism is provided between the unit-s wheel and the wheels of higher denomination, which transfer mechanism may be any of the forms well known in the art.
Each of the above mentioned rollers is provided with a pinion 87, the pinions of the rolls 71 and 72 meshing, while the pinions of the rolls 7 3 and 74 also mesh. The pinions connected to the rollers 72 and 74 mesh with a pinion 88 (Fig.2), which pinion has secured thereto a beveled gear 89 which meshes with a similar gear 90 secured to the upper end of an inclined shaft 91. This shaft is suitably mounted upon the auxiliary frame work 67 and at its lower end is provided with a beveled pinion 92 which meshes with a similar gear 93, that is secured to a pinion 94 suitably supported in the auxiliary frame work 07. This pinion 9i meshes with a similar pinion 95 (Fig. 1), which pinion is secured to the upper end of a stub shaft 96, which at its lower end is also provided with a beveled gear 97 that meshes with a similar gear 98 secured to the forward end of the aforesaid drivingshaft 47. By the above described gear connections, the rollers 71 to 74, inclusive, will be given a complete rotation at 'each operation of the machine. By reference to Fig. 11, it will be seen that the rollers 71 and 71 are provided with enlarged portions 99, by which portions the ticket strip is gripped between each pair of rollers and fed forwardly prior to the complete rotation of said rollers. From the rollers the ticket strip is fed between knives 100 and 101 which forms the severing mechanism for the strip and thence on to a platen 102 mounted in the auxiliary frame work 67.
From the above description it will be seen that the ticket strip willbe fed upon the platen 102 prior to the complete rotation of the drive shaft 47 and will remain in such position during the remainder of rotation of said drive shaft in order to receive an-impression from .the operated destination device, at which time the severing mechanism, comprising the knives 100 and 101 is operated to sever that portion of the ticket strip having the destination recorded thereon so that same may be handed to the patron.
The knife 101 is rigidly mounted upon the auxiliary frame work 67 (Fig. 9) while the knife 100 is pivotally mounted, as at 103, to one of the sides of said frame work. This latter knife beyond its pivotal point has conside of which a roller 107 supported by an arm 108 secured to the shaft 91 engages near the end of rotation of said shaft and thereby elevates the rod 105 and through link 104 rocks the knife 100 about its pivotal point 103 so as to sever the portion of the ticket strip resting upon the platen 102 and containin the destination from the remainder of said strip.
As previously described, the destination device 4 that is in cooperative relation with the reciprocatory member 1 1 is partially depressed upon the beginning of rotation of shaft 53 and in this partially depressed position, the destination device is arranged to be inked by an ink roller 109 (Figs. 2 and 0) supported in arms 110 pivotally mounted upon a cross rod 111, which in turn is supported by arms 112 pivotally mounted as at 113 to the auxiliary frame 07. The roller 109 normally rests upon a disk 114 carrying a supply of ink. This disk is mounted upon a vertical stud 115 extending up from one of the cross arms of the auxiliary frame 67. This disk 114 has connected thereto a gear 116 which is arranged to be rotated by a pawl 117 carried by an arm 118 pivotally mounted upon the stud 115. The arm 118 is connected to one end of a link 119 the other end of which passes through a stud 300 secured to one of the arms 112. This link 119 is provided with a collar 301, with which the stud 300 contacts as the arm 112 carrying said stud nears the end of its movedescribed lost motion between the stud 300.
carried by one of the arms 112 and the collars 301 and 302 secured to the link 119 is provided. From this it will be seen that as the arms 112 are oscillated, as previously described. the inking disk 114 will be partially operated through its connection with the a n gear lie. The rotation of the inking di'sk 11 1 is for the purpose of furnishing a fresh supply of ink to the roller 109 as said roller is reciprocated across the disk. One of the arms 112 is connected by a link 120, (Figs. 2 and 2), to a ring 121 surrounding a disk 122 eccentrically mounted upon the aforesaid shaft 91. The eceentrically mounted disk 122 is so located upon the shaft that upon the very beginning of rotation of said shaft, the arms 112 through the link 120 (Fig. 2), will be rocked in an anti-clockwise direction carrying the roller 109 over the feed rollers 71 and 73 and thence into contact with the destination stamp 123' that is in partially operated condition. By this movement the ink roller 109 inks the feed rollers 71 and 73carrying an electroplate and the total consecutive numbering devices respectively, and also .inks the partially operateu destination device. In its movement to ink the destination device, the roller 109 is guided by its supporting rod 124 passing into an elongated slot 125 formed upon a guide bracket 126 secured to the auxiliary frame 67. The purpose of this guide bracket 1% is two fold: first, to insure the inking of the partially operated destination device, and second, to prevent the dropping of the roller 109 into contact with the knife 100 or the platen102.
Each of the arms 110 supporting the ink roll 109 has an extension 127 to which arod 128 is pivotally attached, Figs. 2 and .6. Therods 128 at theirlower ends are guided by lugs 129 projecting from arms 112 and intermediate their ends the rods are provided with collars 130. Springs 131 are interposed between the collars 130 and lugs 129 and thus hold the ink roll under spring tension into contact with the inking disk 114.
A summary record strip 131 is mounted upon the auxiliary frame 67 and is arranged to be fed from a supply roll 132 over a guide roll 133, between the feed rollers 73 and 74, around a guide roll 13 and thence over the platen 102 to a storage roll 135 supported by the auxiliary frame 67. 'An
inking ribbon 136 is led from a roll 137 around a guide roll 138 between the feed rollers 71, 72, 73 and 74 around the guide 7 roll 134 thence over the platen 102 to a roll 139 mounted in the auxiliary frame 67.
When the partially operated destination device is completely operated to stamp the fare, the destination and the number of tickets issued thereto upon the ticket strip, the same information is transferred to the record strip 131 through the inking ribbon 136, (Fig. 2). The record strip and the inking ribbon passing between the rolls 73 land 74: will be fed by said rolls and the amount of strip and ribbon fed thereby will be stored upon the rolls 135 and 139 respectively, by suitable friction devices, not shown, but which are well known in the arty.
As each destination device is operated to stamp the ticket and the record strip its I nected to the units wheel of itscompanion numbering device 6. When a destination device is depressed the. ratchet 2 01 is lowered with the deviceindependently/of the,
pawl 200 and the pawl engages above the next succeedin tooth so thatfupon return of the destination device to normal position the pawl 200 causes the units wheel to rotate one step forwardlyv to add one on the counter. A retainin pawl 202 .holds the units wheel in its advanced position. No
transfer devices between the units wheel and. the remaining wheels of the numbering devices are shown it being understood that any of the well known devices may be em- 'ployed.
The record strip 131 is inclosed in a suitable casingand is only accessible to the auditor or some other authorized person. the number of tickets issued toa ny destination is recorded upon the record stripadjacent to the destination recorded thereon, it is obvious that by means of this strip a quick and accurate audit may be obtained without interfering in the least with the operation of the machine, all being necessary is to detach the used portion of strip from the stor- Each machine is provided age roll 135.
with a hand stamp 1 10, which as herein Q shown is mounted upon the arm 141 (Fi'g.
2). Upon the removal of the used portion, 1 of the record strip by the proper person one end thereof is inserted inthe stamp ltll and the latter operated by which operation suitable characters, (Fig. 17), are recorded upon the strip for the purpose of identifying the machine from which it Was removed.
As heretofore stated, a registering mecha nism is provided for accumulating the total of the fares of the issued tickets, which mechanism will now be described.
Each destination device, as previously described, is provided with amount determining fingers 7 (Figs. 1, 2, 7 and 8). These fingers'are graduated and represent the fafe from the issuing station to the destination represented by the device carrying said fingers. One finger 7 is provided for each de nomination represented in the fare charged. For example if a destination device prints a 25c ticket but two fingers will be employed whereas another destination device printing a- $3.25 ticket would have three fingers. As the selected destination device is lowered, the amountdetermining fingers 7 carried thereby will come in contact with vertical links 142 supported by arms 143 and 144: (Figs. 2 and 5) The arms 143 are pivotally mounted upon an upright 145 of a frame 146 which is secured tothe platform 66 extending forwardly from the main frame 67, of the machine. The arms 143 have extensions 147 (Figs. 2 and 5), which extensions are normally drawn into contact with lugs 148 by springs 149'suitably secured to the extensions and to the upright 145. The purpose of the lugs 148, as is obvious, is to prevent the return of the arms 143 and the vertical linlgs supported thercbybeyond their normal position. The arms 114 supporting the lower ends of the links 142 are connected to the ends of a shaft 150 and sleeves 151 surrounding said shaft, the other ends of the sleeves and shaft having secured thereto arms 15?. which support at their outer ends pawls 153 that are spring pressed into on gagement with gear wheels 15%. The gear wheels 154 are loosely mounted upon the shaft 150 and sleeves 151 and mesh with pinions 155'secured to registering wheels 156.
As the amount determining fingers 7 carried bv the different destination devices are of different lengths, it will be seen that when said destination devices are lowered, the links 142 will have imparted thereto a graduated movement, which movement through the shaft 150 and sleeves 151 and pawls- 153 carried by arms 152 will be imparted to the wheels 1'54 and by the latter to the registering wheels 156. As the operated destination device is returned to its normal position, the parts actuating the registering mechanism will also be returned to their normal position by the springs 149 during which movement the pawls 153 will ride idly over the gears 154, the latter and the registering wheels'being held in their adjusted positions by plunger-s 157 which engage with recesses formed in flanges 158 of said registering wheels 156. In the illustrative form of-embodiment disclosed herein but three gear wheels 154 are shown. It is obvious, however, that the machine may be provided with more or less gear wheels the number of gears being dependent upon the number of fingers 7 carried by the destina tion device issuing tickets of the largest denomination. No transfer mechanism is shown between the various elements of the registering mechanism, as any of the well known forms may be used. The registering mechanism is inclosed in a casing 159, the said casing being provided with a hinged portion 160 which portion covers the registering wheels and is under lock and key so access may be had to it only. by a duly authorized person. Partly surrounding the wheels 156 is a shield 162 having a slot .163 through which the figures on the registering wheels may be read when the hinged portion 160 of the casing is raised. The casing 159 is further provided with openings 161 through which the upper ends of the links 142 extend.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of arm bodiment shown and described herein, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
