y subject of the King of Great Britain, residingrat Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of l/Iichigan, khave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retouching-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. l
This is an improvement in connection with the retouching machine disclosed by my Patent No. 1,17 3,110, granted Feb. 29, 1916, wherein there is disclosed an instrument that may be advantageouslyused by photographers andV artists for retouching photographic negatives, `prints and pictures.
The instrument is in the form of a pencil or stylus by which lines may be softened, shadows raised, and the density of negative portions increased or decreased by inscribed or overlapping circles in contradistinction to dots, lines and the hooks commonly used.
My present invention aims to provide an instrument which includes an adjustable anti-frictional bearing for shifting a slotted member which regulates the delineation of the instrument.
The sole purpose of the present application is to obtain protection upon a form and improvement not covered by my prior patent, and with this end in view, reference will now be had to the drawing and also lto the following description of the same.

The reference numeral 22 denotes a tubular handle, and centrally of said handle there is an anti-frictional bearing 23 provided with .studs or pins 24: extending through opposed longitudinal slots 25 in the tubular handle 22. The pins or studs 24 are connected to an adjustable sleeve 26 slidable on the tubular handle 22, and by sliding said sleeve the antifrictional bearing 23 may be shifted longitudinally of the tubular handle.
Extending through the anti-frictional bearing 23 is a stem 27 of a hollow head 28 slidable in the tubular handle 22, said hollow head engaging one side of said bearing. The hollow head 28 has opposed walls thereof provided with angularly disposed slots 29 and extending into said slots is a transverse pin 30 having a universal connection 31 for the inner reduced or ball end 32 of a stylus 33, said stylus being held in the outer end of the handle 22 for a wabbling movement relative thereto. The means for` so supporting the stylus has been shown in my prior patent.
Connected to the inner end of the stem 27 is a coupling member 3d and eXtending into said coupling member and in driving relation therewith is a driving shaft 35, said driving shaft being journaled in the outer end of the handle 22. The coupling member 34: bears against the end of the bearing 23 and permits of the head 28 being shifted longitudinally of the tubular handle by the sleeve 26, without destroying the driving relation between the shaft 35, the stem 27, the head 28 and the stylus 33. The anti-frictional bearing 23 assures non-frictional rotation of the coupling member 34 and the head 28 within the tubular handle and at the same time serves in conjunction with the sleeve 26 as means for shifting the head 28 to correctly position the wabbler sleeve 36 which supports the stylus 33, and in this manner circles of a predetermined diameter may be described by the outer end of the 'stylus 33. y
What I claim is 1. An instrument of the character described comprising a tubular handle, a wabbler shaft in the outer end thereof, a driving shaft in the inner end of said handle, an anti-frictional bearing slidable in said handle, a sleeve slidable on said handle and having connection with the bearing in said handle for moving said bearing, a hollow head in said handle having a stem journaled in said bearing', means connecting the stem of said hollow head to said driving shaft, and means connecting said hollow head to the inner end of said wabbler shaft.
2. An instrument of the character described comprising a tubular handle, a driving shaft extending therein, a wabbler shaft at the outer end of said tubular handle, and means including a hollow slotted head, a pin and a universal connection rotatable in synehronism with said driving shaft and engaging theinner end of said Wabbler shaft adapted to position the end of said Wabbler shaft out of the longitudinal axis of said driving shaft.

An instrument of the character described comprising a, tubular handle, ak Wabbler shaft in the outer end thereof, a slotted head and transverse pin engaging the inner end of said Wabbler shaft adapted to adjust the inner end of said Wabbler shaft relatively to the longitudinal axis of said tubular handle, and means extending into said tubular handle adapted for imparting a rotary movement `to said slotted head and transverse pin.

An instrument of the character described comprising a tubular handle, a Wabbler shaft in the outer end thereof, a driving shaft in the inner end of said handle, a sleeve slidable on said handle and having connection With the bearing vin said handle for moving said bearing, a hollow head in said handle and connected to said driving Vshaft so as to be driven thereby, and a universal connection between said hollow head and said Wabbler shaft.

An instrument of the character described comprising a tubular handle, a Wabbler shaft in the outer end thereof, a driving shaft in the inner end of said handle, an anti-frictional bearing slidable in Said handle, a sleeve slidable on said handle and having connection with the bearing in said handle for moving said bearing, a hollovs7 head in said handle against one end of said bearingV and having a stem journaled in said bearing, means engaging the other end of said bearin and having a sliding connection with said ,riving shaft so that said shaft may impart movement to said hollow head, and a sliding connection between said hollow head and said Wabbler shaft.
