Description

T. ORR.-
WINDLASS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 26. 1919.
Patented N0v.'18, 1919.
INVENTOQ AT OQNEY WITNES$ES THOMAS ORR, 0F RACINE, WISCONSIN.
WINDLASS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919,
Application filed March 26, 1919. Serial No. 285,143.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ORR, a c1t1- zen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Windlasses, of Which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying draw1ngs, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to a Windlass and more particularly to a light portable type of Windlass which may be used w1th a cable to pull automobiles out of mud holes or bad places in the road, or for other purposes.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a light, portable Windlass 1n whlch a double acting mechanism is used to turn the drum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, compact and durable construction of pulling device.
The invention is further designed to provide a Windlass with a pair of spaced ratchet wheels and a pawl cooperating with each of said wheels, the pawls being carried by levers which may be alternately swung back and forth by the operator and the drum thereby quickly turned to wind up the pulling cable.
The invention further consists 1n the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by a claim at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end view of the device embodying the invention, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device, parts being broken away and parts hein shown in section.
The device consists of 'a clevis member 3 carrying a shaft 4: upon which a windlng drum 5 is pivotally mounted, and means for turning said drum.
The clevis 3 is in the form of a link member having holes 6 in the central portion of its ends and reinforcing ribs 7 on its sldes, with alined apertures centrally disposed in said sides to receive the drum shaft 4, which is held in place by cotter pins 8. cable, such as shown in dotted lines at 9 in Fig. 1, may be secured to the link member or clevis by passing an end of it through either one of the holes 6.
The drum 5 1s a hollow casing having inwardly projecting annular flanges 10 journaled on the shaft 8, with recessed portions 11 at the outer ends of said flanges. The drum 10 also has upwardly extending integral annular flanges 12 on each end, the peripheries of which are cut to form teeth 13 and thus constitute ratchet wheels. A cable may also be anchored to the drum by passing it through an opening 14 in the drum.
Mounted on the shaft 8 between the ends of the drum and the sides 7 of the link are levers 15 which are provided with inwardly extending bosses 16 bearing in the recesses 11 of the drum. Each of these levers has a pawl 17 pivotally secured thereto by a pin 18 and adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel disposed. adjacent thereto. To
increase the leverage of the levers 15, extension handles 19 may be detachably secured to the pointed ends 20 of the levers. Each handle 19 is provided with a V-shaped notch 21 in which the pointed end 20 of the lever is adapted to fit and with ribs 22 so as to form a socket to receive the free end of the lever.
In use, if the end 23 of a pull cable is secured to the drum 5 and the other end to the object to be pulled, and another cable secured to the clevis 3 at one end and at the other to a fixed support, then by alternately swinging the levers 15 back and forth the end 23 of the pulling cable may be wound up on the drum and the object pulled toward the drum, the pawls serving to rotate the drum in one direction. It will also be noted that one lever and its pawl acts as a lock during the movement of the other lever and its pawl.
From the foregoing description it will be noted that the device is simple but compact and Well adapted for the purposes described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a Windlass, the combination of a clevis member having end portions provided with apertures to receive one end of a cable, a and pawls carried by said levers coiiperatshaft journaled in the sides of said clevis, a ing with said ratchet wheels. 10 drum having ratchet wheels integral there- In testimony whereof I aflix my signawith at its ends and inwardly extending ture, in presence of two witnesses. fianges journaledon said shaft with annular I THOMAS ORR. recesses adjacent said flanges, levers jour- Witnesses:
v naled on said shaft and having inwardly E. L. OSBORN,
projecting bosses journaled in said recesses, M. I. RAPPs.
