To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. BROOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Meat and Bone Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in meat and bone cutting machines, and the Ob? j ects of my invention are to provide a power driven saw blade for use in meat markets, or shops, and so constructed as to be readily fixed to any meat block, table, bench or other stable support, to be of quick and easy control and noiseless in its operation. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

The form and dimensions of various parts of the machine may be' changed without in terference with thelr respective functions.
1n the drawings the uppermost part of a meat block or table is delineated, but, as the meat block or other support is not a part of my invention, it need not be considered further than to indicate the relative position of the saw frame.
. A bracket 2 formed with an upright hollow post thereon is fixed to the. side of the meat block 1 by means of lag screws or otherwise. A post-head or cap 3, having a spindle turned thereon and aiapted to form a socket union with the hollow post, and revoluble thereon, carries the saw frame, the post-head 0r cap 3 having a hinge connection with the tail-piece 4, the axis of the hinge joint being horizontal and at right angles with the line of the arm 12.

A hanger 13 is connected with, and supported by, the arm 12 near its outer end by a sleeve adapted to slide along the arm 12.
p The lower end of the hanger 13 is bent outward horizontally and forked and this fork supports vertically a cylindrical casing 14, the casing 14 being hinged at its lower end to the legs of the fork, the axis line of the hinge joint being horizontal and at right angles with the longitudinal line of the arm 12.
The casing 14 has anti-friction bearings fitted into and inclosed at each end, the casing 14. being enlarged sufiiciently to form cups for the bearings.
A shaft extends longitudinally through the casing 14 and is supported by the antifriction bearings lodged within the casin 14. The shaft is extended downward, an outward from the casing 14 and a wheel, or pulley, 19 is firmly fixed to and upon the lower end of the shaft. The upper end of the shaftis extended into a slot formed in the under side of the sleeve of the hanger 13, the width of the slot being a trifle greater than the diameter of the shaft. The slot extends lengthwise with the sleeve and is of sutlicient length to allow a certain amount of forward or backward inclination of the shaft and its supporting mechanism; 2'. 6., the casing 14 and the anti-friction shaft bearings inclosed therein.

A sheave 23 mounted on a fork of the bracket limb 10 and a sheave 23* carried by a fork of the bracket limb 10 serve to keep the saw blade 20 in contact with the meat or bone and to guide the blade while in operation. v
A hollow grip or hand-hold 16 fitted to the outer extremity of the arm 12 may contain a, suitable switch mechanism properly insulated and adapted for operation by finger pressure exerted upon a lever trigger 17 fitted in a slot in the under side of the grip 16. The switch is connected with insulated wires inclosed in the arm 12 and extendedtherefrom. to the motor 7 and to any convenient outlet. The motor structure and its wire and switch accessories constitute no part of my invention, as any adaptable motor and switch device may be utilized; but the location of the switch and the manner of its control, as specified, should be considered as important elements in its operative usefulness.
As a band saw blade will not continuously adhere to flat faced pulleys rotating in a true common plane, approximately horizontal, a means of adjusting the pulleys to such planes of rotation as may be required must be provided. Therefore, in my inven tion I have incorporated the hinge connection of the motor base 6 with the tail-piece 4, and the hinge connection of the casing 1 1 with the hanger 13, as above specified. By means of these hinge connections each of the pulleys 1919 may be adjusted to rotate in a plane of its own and at such angle of variance with the other as may be required to retain the saw blade 20.
A thumb-screw 22 fitted in the hanger 13 and in connection with the head of the casing 14 holds the pulley 19/ in its plane of rotation, and the thumb-screw 8 fitted into a lug on the periphery of the base plate 6 in connection with the tail-piece 4 serves a like purpose in relation to the pulley 19.
By means of the thumb-screw 15, fitted in the bracket 11 and acting upon the hanger 13, the saw blade may be adjusted to a pro or degree of tension.

The machine may be assembled and at tached to the meat block in a manner to suit the convenience of either a right or left handed operator, the only necessary change being a transfer of the fender 18 and the sheaves 2323 and their supporting members from one side of the arm 12 to the opposite side.
In operation the saw blade 20 is brought into position directly above the material to be cut, the motor is started by finger pressure upon the trigger 17 followed by a downward movement of the arm 12 which forces the actuated saw blade 20 through the meat or bone.
The operation of my invention is not attended by the objectionable noises incidental to machines of this class, as the drive pulley is connected with and forms practically a Working part of the motor, thus dispensing with all gear, chain, or other intermediary saw driving connections.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a meat and bone cutting machine, a frame revolubly mounted on a base and carrying an electrical motor and a band saw blade trained upon two pulleys, one of said pulleys being fixed to and coactive with the armature shaft of the motor, as described.
2. In a meat and bone cutting machine, a saw frame consisting of a tubular arm with a detachable tail-piece extension supported by and revoluble upon a base, an electrical motor carried upon a tilting base plate supported by the extended tail-piece of the arm and having a driving pulley fitted to the armature shaft thereof, a fellow pulley fixed to a shaft supported by a hanger having connection with the arm by a slidable sleeve, a band saw blade trained upon said pulleys and adapted to effect a vertical cleavage.
3. In a meat and bone cutting machine, the combination of a tubular arm having a tail-piece affixed thereto and having a hinged connection with a supporting revoluble post, an electrical motor carried upon a base plate in hinged connection with the tail-piece of the arm and having a driving pulley fixed to the armature shaft thereof, a fellow pulley fitted to a shaft supported by bearings lodged within a cylindrical casing having a hinge connection with a hanger supported by the arm by means of a slidable sleeve, a
band saw blade encompassing the pulleysand arranged to effect a vertical cleavage, brackets clamped to the arm and having detachable and adjustable limbs supporting a fender in proximity to the unused part of the saw blade and sheaves to hold the saw a thumb-screw medium of adjusting the saw blade to a proper degree of tension, a thumbscreW bonding'the base plate of the motor and the tail-piece, and a similar connection between the cylindrical casing and its supporting hanger as adjustment mediums.
