SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,934, dated December 24, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. RANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the'county of ayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mitering-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mitering-machines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafterfully set forth and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efiective means for quickly cutting a true miter at any degree of bevel and to enable the cutting of the bevel at each end of a piece of molding without reversing the piece, which object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same; Fig. 3, a rear elevation, a portion of the table only showing in vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 4:; and Fig. 4 is a plan of the table.
Referrin g to the letters of reference, A designates a suitable frame, upon which is mounted a table B, having two fixed gagepieces a, secured at their outer ends to opposite edges of the table, their inner ends extending toward the center in the same plane and terminating some distance apart.
O designates a circular rotatable disk in the center of the table, adapted to rotate about its own axis under the inner ends of the gagepieces a, and is provided with a diametrical slot 11 therein for the passage of the saw.
D designates the drive-shaft, which is journaled in the base of the frame A and is driven from a pulley D thereon.
WVithin the main frame is a pivoted frame consisting of the vertical uprights E and F and the cross-piece G connecting said uprights at their lower ends. The upper-ends of said uprights are secured to the under face of the rotary disk 0 in the center of the table, and the cross-bar G is pivoted at c in the'frame A, which point is the center of oscillation of said pivoted frame as well as the disk C which turns 5 5 therewith.
Secured to the cross-piece G of the pivoted frame is a lever H, which extends outward to the front of the machine and rests upon a curved cross-piece H. By a horizontal movement of the outer end of this lever said frame may be swung upon its pivot c, at the same time rotating the disk 0, which moves therewith.
One end of the cross-piece G is provided with a tenon e, which engages and is adapted to travel in a way in the edge of a curved guide I, and supports said pivoted frame in its movement.
The upright E of the pivoted frame has a depending end E, which extends below the cross-piece G, and in which is journaled a short section of shaft D that is coupled bymeans of a universal joint J with the shaft D, at a point directly in vertical line with the 7 5 pivot c. This construction enables the section of shaft D to be driven by the shaft D, though standing at any angle thereto, through the turning of the pivoted frame upon its point of oscillation.
Upon the section of shaft D is a pulley K, which is connected by a belt K with a pulley L on a transverse shaft L jour'naled in the uprights E and F. Pivoted upon this shaft between said uprights are the arms M and N, which carry at their upper ends a frame 0,
in which is journaled a mandrel P carrying a circular saw R, which extends through the slot 1) in the rotary disk 0. Mounted upon the shaft L is a pulley L of large diameter, which is connected by a belt S with a small pulley S upon the mandrel of the saw B, through which said saw is driven at the requisite speed.
The pivoting of the arms M and N upon the 5 shaft L permits said arms to swing back and forth upon said pivots, thereby causing the saw R to reciprocate longitudinally of the slot 1) in the disk 0 of the table. This operation of said frame and saw is accomplished by means of a handle T, which is pivotally attached to the arm M and extends forward to the front of the machine.
Secured to the upright F and embracing the lower end of the arm N, so as to stand on either side thereof, is a curved guard a, which serves as a stop against which said arm strikes and prevents the saw from swinging too far in either direction. In the rear end of said guard u is a roller f, over which passes a rope h, one end of which is attached to the arm N and the opposite end to a weight t, which serves to return the swinging saw-frame back to the position shown in Fig. 2 after being drawn forward in the operation of cutting.
Upon the face of the table B, around the front margin of the rotary disk, is a graduated scale w, and upon said disk, in line with the saw-slot b, is an indicator 'm, by which means, through the rotation of said disk, the saw-slot therein may be readily brought to stand at any angle to the face of the gage-pieces a to cut any bevel required.
In the operation of the machine the molding to be cut is placed upon the table against the gage-pieces a, and the disk 0 and saw are rotated to cause the saw to stand at any desired angle to the face of said gages, when the saw is drawn forward by the handle T and the molding cut through on the required bevel, the weight V carrying the saw back upon the release of the handle. The saw and disk are then turned to the other angle required and the molding again out, and soon, enabling both bevels upon a single piece to be out without reversing the piece upon the table.
While I have shown this machine as driven by power, it is evident that a foot-treadle may be employed to drive it by attaching a pitman to a crank upon the shaft D.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a mitering machine, the combination of the frame carrying a table, the rotary disk in said table having a diametrical slot therein, the pivoted frame carrying the saw driving mechanism and attached to said rotary disk, the saw frame mounted to swing in said pivoted frame and carrying the saw which extends through the slot in said disk.
2. In a mitering machine, the combination of the main frame carrying a rotary center having a diametrical slot, the pivoted frame carrying the saw driving mechanism and attached to the rotary center of said table, the saw frame mounted to swing in said pivoted frame and carrying the saw which extends through the slot in the rotary center of said table, the lever for turning said pivoted frame upon its center of oscillation, and means for swinging the saw frame to cause the saw to travel back and forth in the slot of the rotary center of said table.
3. In a mitering machine, the combination of the main frame having a fixed table provided with a rotary center, the pivoted frame carrying the saw driving mechanism and attached to the rotary center of said table, the saw-frame mounted to swing in said pivoted frame and carrying a saw which extends through a slot in said rotary center, the driven shaft in the main frame, and the shaft section carried by the pivoted frame connected thereto by a union joint.
4. In a mitering machine, the combination of the frame carrying a table having a rotary disk in the center thereof, the pivoted frame carrying the saw driving mechanism and attached to said rotary disk, the saw carrying frame mounted to swing within said pivoted frame and carrying a saw which extends through a slot in said rotary disk, and the weight and rope attached to said saw-frame to return the saw, as set forth.
