To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRIET L. Games, a citizen of the United States, residing at Narbeth, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blacking Containers and Applicators, of which the following is a specification. p

The invention relates to devices for use in blacking or polishing shoes, boots, or other foot wear, and has for an object to provide a container for the blacking or polish to be employed, and an applicator for use in applying the blacking or polish to the foot wear.

The invention comprehends among other features the provision of a suitable box or container for the blacking or polish Which is usually in a plastic state, with a suitable pad or applicator, normally contained in and carried by the box or container and adapted to be removed therefrom, when the cover of the box or container is removed, so that the pad or applicator can be readily employed to take a portion of the contents of the container and permit of the ready application thereof to the foot wear.

Still further the invention comprehends a combined blacking or polish container and pad, the entire construction being of a uni tary nature, in which the various parts are of a simple design and construction and can be cheaply manufactured for the desired purpose.

In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, with the ball or handle of the pad or applicator, shown in raised position.

Referring more particularly to the views,

the numeral 10 indicates a box or container which consists generally, of a body portion 11, and a cover 1:2 normally fitted over the body portion 11, the latter containing a suitable blacking or polish 13, usually in the form of a paste. The cover 12 is formed with a slot 14 for the support of an appli cator 15 consisting of a pad 16 of any suitable material, said pad being carried by a wire-like frame 17 having a cross portion 18 thereof, provided with a hinge element 19, the latter being formed to support a bail or handle 20. Referringparticularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the bail or handle is adapted to be passed through the slot 1 from the underside of the cover, in order to bring the pad into position beneath the cover and out of contact with the contents of the box when the cover is arranged in position thereon, the handle 20 being adapted to be swung into a horizontal position after a suitable clip or holding element 22 has been arranged to slide over the top of the cover with a spring-like tongue 23 thereof, passing between one of the hinge portions 19 and projecting or extending portions 24 of the handle 20. In securing the pad in position beneath the cover the handle is first passed through the slot 14 from the underside thereof and the clamp is then arranged to be slid into 0- sition as shown in Figs. 1, 3, thus locking the pad in position, after which thehandle 20 thereof, can be swung downwardly to lie substantially against the top or surface of the cover.

When in this position, as shown in Fig. 1, the box of polish or blacking and its associated pad, will form a unitary construction and the device can be readily packed and shipped in a compact form. When it is desired to use the blacking or polish, it is only necessary to raise the handle 20, to a vertical position, slide the clamp away from the cover and out of engagement with the handle of the pad and then, havin removed the cover from the box, the handle can be readily dropped through the slot so as to entirely disengage the pad from contact with the cover, after which the pad is grasped by the handle and applied to the contents of the box and then in turn, the pad is applied to the shoe or other foot wear, that is to receive the blacking or polish. I

It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular form and construction of pad, handle or clip employed; the

particular design thereof depending entirely upon'the particular nature and design of the box or container employed; that various slight changes may be made from the con- I struction set forth and herein illustrated in the drawings, and that the scope of the in vention is defined by the appended claims,

7 and it will be apparent that in the simpli- ,fication of the device described, there provided an article which can be cheaply manufactured; consists of. few and simple parts and can be compactly arranged for ship handle 20,falthough normally horizontal, can

7 be swung upwardly as shown in Fig. 2, to V provide a means for exerting a pull upon the cover 12, permitting of the ready re- .moval of the cover from the body portion of the container, it being well known that ordinarily it is diflicult to remove the covers of boxes or containers of polish.

Having described my invention, I claim 1.. A polish container and applicator therefor, comprising a polish containing box and a slotted cover for association with the box, a pad, a handle on the pad and adapted to be passed through the slot of the cover to dispose the pad immediately beneath the underside of the cover and a clamp for engagement with the cover and the handle of the pad to lock said pad against accidental removal from said cover.

2. A polish container and an applicator therefor, comprising a box for the polish, a cover for the box, a pad for removable connection with said cover and a removable spring clamp normally locking and securing said pad against removal from said cover.

3. A polish container and an applicator therefor, comprising a box for the polish and pad for removable association with a portion of the'box and a removable spring-like clamp bearing against a face portion of the box and interlocking with a portion of the pad for normally securing sa1d pad against accidental removal from said portion of the box.
