To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLF STEINMASEL, a subject of'the Emperor of Germany, residing at Red Lodge, in the county of Carbon and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cable-Guide Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
The steel cables employed for drawing mine cars for bringing such cars to the surface travel over guide rollers constructed of cast steel, and are therefore subject to wear which has resulted in the breakage of such cables, the destruction of cars and injury to life and limb of the miners.
It is the primary object of the present invention to produce a cable guide roller having a central portion in the nature of a filler of rubber, canvas or the like whereby to render the same compressible to the extent that the contact therewith on the cable will not inflict injury to thesaid cable.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a cable guide roller having a com-- pressible central portion and end portions constructed of metal whereby the cable will be at all times guided to the compressible center of the roller, and to further journal said roller upon a shaft having means whereby a lubrication is constantly delivered between the same and the roller to insure the free turning of the roller on the shaft.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a roller of this character wherein a new bearing surface of compressible material can be readily applied when the original bearing has been subject to wear or in other ways damaged.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a device of this character which shall be of a comparatively simple nature, easily manufactured and installed, and thoroughly efficient for the purpose for which it is devised.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improvement in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a. sectional view approximately 011 the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the shaft; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the side members or flanges of the guide roller;
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the hub;
Fig. 7 is a similar view of a compressible bearing surface for the roller; and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the spanner wrenches which is employed for connecting the sides to the hub.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the spanner wrench employed for securing the side members or flanges of the guide roller to the hub therefor.
Between two of the ties 10 on which the mine cars travel there is secured bearings 11 for an axle 12. The bearings are preferably formed of strap iron and the axle 12 is preferably in the nature of a tube or pipe section. The axle 12 has one of its ends closed by a threaded plug 13, and its opposite end has screwed thereon an L-shaped coupling 14, the latter having its ends provided with continuous outstanding beads 15. One of the bearings 11 is formed with depressions 16 within which one of the beads 15 of the L-coupling 14 is received. This holds the axle against longitudinal movement in either direction and obviates the necessity of the employment of collars or flanges for accomplishing this purpose.
The L-coupling 14 is arranged vertically and provides a chamber for a lubricant, the said chamber being normally closed by a threaded plug 17. The hollow axle 12, at suitable points is provided with apertures 18 through which the lubricant flows so that the same is delivered between the shaft and the hub 19 of the cable guide roller 20.
The hub 19 is in the nature of a short pipe section having both of its ends threaded, and screwed on the said threaded. ends are the side members or flanges 21 of the guide roller. The flanges are in the nature of round disks and have their inner peripheries flared inwardly, as disclosed by the drawings. The side members or flanges 21 are provided each with a pair of spaced openings 22 designed to receive the fingers 23 of a spanner wrench 24 whereby the sides or flanges may be screwed on or off the hub 19. On the hub and between the side members or flanges 21 is a compressible filler 25 that provides a bearing surface for the ca-' ble 26 that is attached to the gears. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
Ina device for the purpose set forth, a hollow axle having apertures therein, a plug closing one of the ends of the axle, a lubricant receptacle closing the other end of the axle, a closure for said chamber, bearings for said-axle, interengaging means between one of said bearings and said chamber for holding the axle against longitudinal movement, a roller journaled onesaid axle, said roller comprising a tubular hub, diskshaped flanges threadedly engaging the ends of said hub, and a central roller of compressible material on the hub and compressed between the flanges.
